Broncos roster: Bo Nix (No. 10) enters Year 2 as QB1 in Denver
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at second-year quarterback Bo Nix, No. 10.
Before the Broncos: Nix was a five-year player at the college level, playing his first three years of college football at Auburn before transferring to Oregon for his final years in college. Nix set an NCAA record for starting 61 games in college and was named the 2023 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. In 2023, Nix finished third in Heisman voting, behind fellow first-round picks Jayden Daniels and Michael Penix Jr. Nix was the sixth quarterback selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, tying a post-merger NFL record for quarterback picks in the first round of any draft.
Broncos tenure: Nix came to the Broncos fresh out of college as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Coming into Denver's 2024 training camp, Nix fought for the starting job in a three-horse race between himself, Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham. Each took turns operating the number one offense early in camp. Although Nix was a rookie, he impressed coaches with a veteran-like outlook, quickly earning more days with the first-team offense before finally being named the team's starter.
Nix's rookie year began rocky, going 0-2 to start the year. Nix looked skittish under pressure before finally putting together a 300-yard passing performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, throwing his first touchdown pass in Week 4 against the New York Jets, and giving the Broncos a three-game winning streak. Nix eventually led the Broncos to the playoffs for the first time since Peyton Manning with a 10-7 record. The season then came to an end with a wild card loss to the Buffalo Bills. Throughout 2024, Nix set history (both NFL and team history) nearly every week going down the stretch. Nix finished 2024 completing 376-of-567 passes for 3,775 yards, 29 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed 92 times for 430 yards and four touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass against the Baltimore Ravens in 2024.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. Nix comes into Year 2 as the unquestioned starter in Denver, making his mark on and off the field, much like great Broncos quarterbacks of the past. Going into his sophomore season, Nix is leading his teammates with poise and confidence. With the same system and coach in place, Nix will hopefully thrive in Denver in 2025.
