Broadcaster STV to launch commercial radio station

Broadcaster STV has announced the launch of a new "Scotland-focused" commercial radio mainstream music station will be on digital radio and online and aimed at the 35 to 54-year-old said it would be headed by Graham Bryce, Bauer Media's former chief operating officer, and based at the company's Pacific Quay HQ in name of the station, launch date and key presenters will be unveiled later this year. STV to create new commercial radio station

STV has announced plans to launch of a new Scotland-focused commercial radio station. The new mainstream music station, aimed mainly at 35-to-54-year-olds, will be available on DAB and online. STV said that creating a radio station is a 'natural extension' for the company and will help it create a strong, 'future-proofed' advertising business across digital and audio. The studio will be based at STV's headquarters in Pacific Quay, Glasgow. Bobby Hain, managing director audience: news, audio and regulatory at STV, said: 'We already have a strong connection with our audiences who know and trust our brand and radio is a natural extension for us, so we're delighted to be breaking into this market with an exciting new offering for listeners across Scotland. 'We have a clear ambition to be a top three commercial radio station in Scotland by 2030. 'This is a move that will help us grow our audience even further and create exciting new commercial opportunities. 'Together, our broadcast channel, streaming platform and radio station will enable us to offer a powerful cross-platform and affordable advertising proposition with real regional flexibility and local targeting capabilities.' The radio station will be headed by Graham Bryce, who was previously chief operating officer of Bauer Media UK. It has been announced as part of a wider strategic update from STV on Wednesday. The radio station is part of its newly created Audience division, which incorporates the company's broadcast channel STV, streaming service STV Player and the new audio business. The name of the station and its key presenters will be announced later this year. Mr Bryce said: 'I'm delighted to be leading this new venture with STV, expanding its offering into the dynamic world of audio. 'Radio listening remains robust and with Scots having a strong appetite for commercial radio I'm confident our new national station will offer something different and exciting to the market. 'This will be a truly national commercial station for Scotland with presenters, news and content focused on the needs and interests of listeners living in Scotland. Howard Simpson will succeed Gary Thompson, who is leaving later in the summer after nearly a decade in the role. Simpson (below) is currently head of news content at BBC Scotland and has been with the broadcaster since 2017, when he joined BBC News Scotland as the department's news editor. (Image: BBC Scotland) During this time, he was responsible for running the news desk at Pacific Quay, before becoming newsgathering editor where he managed reporters, correspondents and producers across Scotland. He has been the head of news content since 2023. Simpson has nearly two decades' of experience, during which time he has led coverage of the 2014 independence referendum, the Covid-19 pandemic, a General Election and Holyrood campaign and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Hayley Valentine, BBC Scotland director, said: "Over many years Howard has proved to be an outstanding leader of teams who've covered countless major stories in Scotland, delivered the highest quality programming, and introduced new services for audiences. "I'm excited to be working with him to continue delivering the best journalism and finding new and innovative ways to serve all our audiences. "His creativity, brilliant news judgement, and enthusiastic and skilled leadership, will be vital as we continue to meet our audiences' expectations to provide impartial, informative, and insightful journalism." Simpson said: "It's a great honour to be appointed as head of news and current affairs and to lead all the fantastic teams across the nation. "I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues in news and the executive team as we evolve the production and delivery of our news services in the ever-changing digital age."
