"Never thought this would happen...": Pandi Ram Mandavi on receiving Padma Shri for wood craft
New Delhi [India], May 28 (ANI): Pandi Ram Mandavi, a renowned artist from Bastar, Chhattisgarh, was conferred the Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday. Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honours, was awarded to Mandavi for his significant contributions in wood craft. Mandavi's craftsmanship, which includes creating intricate wooden idols and memory pillars, has gained recognition both in India and abroad. Mandavi told ANI that he is very happy to have received the award. 'I come from Bastar, Chhattisgarh. I am very happy to receive this. I never thought this would happen. I want to thank the Government of India. I make idols of wood and memory pillars. I have visited several places in the country including Kolkata, Mumbai, Kerala, Delhi, and Bhopal to showcase my art. I have also visited Italy, Germany, Russia, and Poland.' Mandavi's works, known for their intricate detailing and cultural significance, have become symbols of traditional art from the tribal regions of India. He has devoted decades to mastering the craft, promoting Bastar's wood art, and taking it to national and global platforms. Mandavi has been an ambassador for his art, travelling widely to showcase his work. The Padma awards recognise individuals who have made significant contributions in various fields such as arts, social work, science, literature, and public affairs. The Padma Shri, which is the fourth-highest civilian award in the country, follows the Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan in order of precedence. (ANI)

Hosting a dinner in honour of those who were conferred with the Padma Awards on Tuesday night, Shah also said that the achievements of the awardees will inspire generations. During the first investiture ceremony on April 28, President Murmu conferred Padma Awards on 71 personalities. In the ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan's Ganatantra Mandap, President Murmu conferred the country's second highest civilian honour, Padma Vibhushan, on Justice (retd) Khehar for public affairs. The awards for Kathak dancer late Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia and legendary folk singer late Sharda Sinha were received by Lakhia's grandson and Sinha's son, respectively. The President also handed over nine Padma Bhushans, the third highest civilian award, to noted personalities, including Chandrakumar, businessman Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, archaeologist Kailash Nath Dikshit, dancer Jatin Goswami, actor Anant Nag and Sadhvi Ritambhara. The awards for economist late Bibek Debroy and former Maharashtra chief minister and Lok Sabha speaker late Manohar Joshi were received by Debroy's wife and Joshi's son, respectively. The awards are given in various disciplines and fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil service, among others. Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order; and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. Ever since the Modi government came to power in 2014, it has started honouring the " unsung heroes " with the Padma Awards, thus transforming them into "People's Padma". This year, the Padma Awards were given to 30 "unsung heroes".

All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex are eligible for these awards. Concerted efforts are being made to identify talented persons whose excellence and achievements really deserve to be recognised from amongst women, weaker sections of the society, SCs & STs, divyang persons and who are doing selfless service to the society.
