Padres' Gavin Sheets gets injury update after scary wall collision in Pirates game

The post Padres' Gavin Sheets gets injury update after scary wall collision in Pirates game appeared first on ClutchPoints. Gavin Sheets gave the San Diego Padres fans a major scare on Sunday after crashing into the left-field wall during the fourth inning of their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Advertisement While tracking a deep shot from Adam Frazier, Sheets slammed into the padded fence at full speed. He dropped to the ground and stayed down for several minutes as team trainers rushed in. Thankfully, he managed to walk off the field on his own, and Brandon Lockridge replaced him in left field. Manager Mike Shildt later shared that Sheets suffered a head contusion, a sore hip, and a jammed wrist and thumb. He also noted the team is still checking for a possible concussion. Despite the multiple injuries, Shildt said Sheets had already shown signs of improvement in the hours following the incident. The timing could not be worse for San Diego. Advertisement Sheets has been one of the team's most pleasant surprises this season. After the Chicago White Sox let him go last November, the Padres picked him up on a minor league deal just before spring training. What started as a low-risk signing quickly turned into a key roster move. Since Opening Day, Sheets has become a major contributor, hitting .267 with an .817 OPS and has racked up 11 home runs, second only to Fernando Tatis Jr. on the team. He also leads San Diego in RBIs with 34. Known more for his bat, Sheets had mostly played first base and served as a designated hitter earlier in the season. But with the Padres struggling to produce from left field, he stepped in and made the transition. If he ends up missing time, the Padres may need to rely on utility players Tyler Wade and Brandon Lockridge. Lockridge finished the game in Sheets' place but was later replaced by Wade as a pinch-hitter when the Pirates changed pitchers. Advertisement While both are versatile, neither brings the same power or consistency at the plate as Sheets. The Padres came away with a 6-4 win, but the bigger concern now is the health of one of their most important offensive players. As medical evaluations continue, the team and its fans are hoping for good news. Losing Sheets for any stretch would be a tough challenge in the middle of an already competitive season.

New Padres ‘OMG' sign emerges after Jose Iglesias said it ‘belongs to the Mets'

Perhaps the Padres are about to enter their 'OMG' era one season after it became an integral piece of the Mets' magical run. Before the Padres' loss to the Mariners on Saturday, television host and reporter Annie Heilbrunn shared a video on X of Jose Iglesias picking up an 'OMG' cutout in Padres colors and handing it to someone else on the field wearing team gear. While that specific sign's backstory remains unclear, Heilbrunn added in a reply that she believes 'this was a gift from a fan.' Screengrab via X/@annieheilbrunn It still served as a strange sight, though, since for the final four months of the 2024 season, those three letters appeared throughout Citi Field and the Mets dugout as the Mets reversed a sinking campaign and ended up two wins shy of a World Series berth. Iglesias, known as 'Candelita' in the music space, performed his hit song 'OMG' — which reached No. 1 on Billboard's Latin Digital Song Sales and even got a remix featuring Pitbull — following a June 28 home game, and when a Mets player would hit a home run, they'd pose with a cutout in the dugout. Advertisement They were scattered throughout the stands, too, as Mets fans embraced the journeyman infielder, who began the year on a minor-league deal before hitting .337 across 85 regular-season games. The three letters became synonymous with their run. Iglesias' presence in the lineup did, too. Advertisement 3 Jose Iglesias celebrates after the Mets clinched the NLDS against the Phillies. The Mets didn't pursue Iglesias in the offseason, instead trying to create opportunities for younger players instead of signing the 35-year-old Iglesias to another deal. Advertisement Iglesias said he was 'totally shocked' by that development that allowed him to sign with the Padres, though he said that the 'OMG' hype and memories belong to his former team in Queens. 3 Jose Iglesias scores a run during the Padres' game against the Rockies on May 10. Getty Images ''OMG' belongs to the Mets,' Iglesias said when San Diego was in New York earlier this month to face the Yankees. 'It's a song for everybody to listen to obviously, but 'OMG' is the Mets. That's how I see it, that's how I look at it. 'Every time that song plays it reminds me of the year, the ups and downs and the development of the organization.' Iglesias, who has his just .228 across 30 games this season, won't make his Citi Field return until September.

Padres star OF Jackson Merrill set to return Tuesday

May 6 - San Diego All-Star center fielder Jackson Merrill is on track to return to the Padres' lineup on Tuesday, according to manager Mike Shildt. The 2024 Rookie of the Year runner-up is in New York as the Padres open a three-game series against the Yankees on Monday. "Scheduled day off today to recover from a couple of games but, yeah, so he's on track for tomorrow," Padres manager Mike Shildt said before Monday's game. "Just a very professional rehab. He dominated every day in what he was able to do." Merrill played the first 10 games before a strained right hamstring forced him out. He was a major component of the Padres' 8-2 start, hitting .378 (14 for 37) with three home runs and 10 RBIs. He was placed on the injured list on April 8, six days after agreeing to a nine-year, $135 million contract through 2034. Merrill got in a pair of rehab games with the Padres' Double-A affiliate in San Antonio last weekend. The 22-year old hit .292 with 24 home runs, 90 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in his rookie campaign. The former shortstop made a successful transition to center field during spring training in 2024.
