J&K govt., Raj Bhavan, Centre need to work in tandem to ensure Pahalgam-like attack is not repeated: Omar
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who chaired a meeting of administrative secretaries and head of departments at Gulmarg on Wednesday (May 28, 2025), said the J&K government, the Raj Bhavan and the Centre have to work in tandem to ensure that Pahalgam-like incident does not take place again. Mr. Abdullah has rolled out a major initiative to attract tourists. After chairing a Cabinet and tour operators meeting in Pahalgam, Mr. Abdullah chose Gulmarg in Baramulla district to hold another meeting of top officials on Wednesday. 'I can promote tourism and create infrastructure to ensure tourists come and have a good visit. But the security for the tourist currently resides within the powers of the J&K Lieutenant Governor. The three sets of powers – J&K government, the Centre and the Raj Bhavan – need to coordinate to ensure the April 22-like attacks don't take place,' Mr. Abdullah said. The Chief Minister rued the security agencies decision to continue to keep destinations and destinations-within-destinations out of bounds for tourists in Kashmir. Around 48 tourist destinations were barred for tourists in Kashmir after the April 22 attack, which left 26 civilians dead. 'Doodhpathri (in Budgam) is closed for tourists. There are smaller destinations within destinations like Gulmarg's Outer Circular Road and Tangmarg's Drung that remain closed. Pahalgam's parks like the Betaab valley are closed. Such initiatives became inevitable after April 22 but need to be reviewed and destinations need to be re-opened. This will help restore tourism,' Mr. Abdullah said. He highlighted that people's spontaneous response to the attack was of strong condemnation. 'People came out to protest against the attack. No Kashmiri was involved in the attack. People hit the roads to say 'Not in our name',' the Chief Minister said. He said the government will encourage students to resume picnics and excursions to the tourist destination. 'We want to send a clear message that Jammu & Kashmir is open for tourism. The silence that followed the attack affected the region. Our presence here is a step toward making these places lively again,' Mr. Abdullah said. Meanwhile, Chief Minister and top officials reviewed readiness for Eid-ul-Azha, Mela Kheer Bhawani, Amarnath Yatra and Muharram during the Gulmarg meeting. Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has sought intervention of the Chief Minister to ensure restructuring of bank loans for those involved in the tourism sector. 'Tourism has suffered a severe setback following the unfortunate incident in Pahalgam leading to significant losses for those whose livelihoods depend on it. I met a group of young Kashmiri tourist transporters who are deeply worried about being declared loan defaulters with the risk of their vehicles being seized. I urge the Hon'ble Chief Minister to intervene by ensuring that banks defer and restructure loan instalments to provide much-needed relief during this challenging time,' Ms. Mufti said in a post on X.

Terrorism is very open business in Pak, aided by state & army: EAM Jaishankar
NEW DELHI: In Pakistan, terrorism is a very open business that is supported, financed, organised and used by the State and by the military, said foreign minister S Jaishankar. In an interview in Germany, during his three-nation trip to Europe last week, the minister also said anyone who is not blind can see that terrorist organisations are openly operating from the cities and towns of Pakistan. "That is no secret. The UN Security Council terror list is full of Pakistani names and places, and these are the very places we have targeted. So please don't think that something is only going on behind the scenes," he said. Jaishankar also said all the focus on the nuclear-weapon issue between India and Pakistan was only encouraging terrorism, adding that at no point was a nuclear level reached during the recent India-Pakistan military conflict. "There is a narrative as if everything that happens in our part of the world leads directly to a nuclear problem. That disturbs me a lot because it encourages terrible activities like terrorism. If anything, much more is happening with the nuclear issue in your part of the world," said the minister, adding that India sent a clear signal to the terrorists through Operation Sindoor that there is a price to be paid for carrying out Pahalgam-like attacks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... We fired back in self-defence and once the Pakistanis understood that they were taking a harmful course, we were able to stop firing. This situation has not changed for two weeks, that is the status," he said. Asked about the role played by the US in reaching the "ceasefire", Jaishankar said only the Indian military can be thanked for it. "I thank the Indian military because it was the Indian military action that made Pakistan say: We are ready to stop," he said. Asked about the differences between India and Germany over the Russia-Ukraine war and India's ties with Moscow, the minister said relationships do not develop because one partner simply adopts the concerns of the other as their own. "Relationships are built on finding common ground. For you in Europe, other concerns and worries are important than for me in Asia. When you think of conflict, you think of Ukraine. When I think of conflict, I think of Pakistan, terrorism, China and our borders. Our perspective cannot be the same,'' he said.

Pausing Indus Waters Treaty huge step against cross-border terrorism: Ex-envoy
Former Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria said the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack was the most serious step taken to fight against terrorism. "The non-kinetic measures taken so far are perhaps the most serious steps India has taken against terrorism as compared to any terror episodes in the past. Suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is a huge step. It has affected Pakistan, which has called it an act of war," Bisaria said. He stressed that kinetic measures were essential to set up a credible deterrence so that cross-border terrorism doesn't happen again. "It is important to have kinetic action in the mix to ensure that the deterrence is credible, lasting and targets the Pakistan Army. The objective is to set up the deterrence to avoid a Pahalgam-like attack again," the former envoy said.

Police's AI Marvel To Stop Pahalgam-Like Attacks
1 2 Nagpur: Nagpur rural police have geared up to stem incidents like the Pahalgam-like terror strike or Muhakumbh stampede and avert a potentially large-scale tragedy. The police have gone tech-savvy with technology upgrades using Artificial Intelligence-driven tools to help a fast-paced and insightful probe. A special purpose vehicle 'Maharashtra Advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement' (Marvel), an AI-driven policing initiative developed by rural police SP Harssh A Poddar, has a special feature for 'object detection'. This feature is equipped to spot arms and weapons in a crowded area to boost surveillance systems and keep appropriate checks in place. The object detection can also calculate the footfalls and provide real-time feedback on the number of people in a crowd allowing the police to prepare for any emergency well in advance. In case of an intelligence failure, the Marvel interface can help police avert major tragedies. Nagpur police's AI-driven experimentation, training, and implementation to upgrade knowledge and efficiency of the unit under SP rank officer force propelled it to achieve second rank in state as part of the assessment to mark 100 days of Devendra Fadnavis regime. IG, Nagpur range, Dilip Bhujbal Patil stated Marvel has given more teeth to the rural police, be it predicting a terror attack, Kumbh-like footfall, expediting investigations achieving high-standard policing proficiencies involving least manpower. "There are around five tools associated with the Marvel system that have manifold benefits," said Bhujbal Patil, who was accompanied by additional SP Ramesh Dhumal, probationer IPS officer and sub-divisional police officers Deepak Aggrawal, Santosh Gaikwad, and senior traffic inspector Vaibhav Jadhav. "The face recognition would help identify and alert us about any criminal or anti-social element from among a sea of crowd," said Bhujbal Patil. Aggrawal said Marvel's 'Official Character Recognition' tool is meant for text translation, speech-to-text conversions, and such works, which would help in speeding up documentation processes. "We can now read FIR or statements of any regional language in India," said Aggrawal. He also stated Marvel's other tools like 'Telecom Chatbot' would help us in analysing call records and mobile tower location details in an elaborate way within minimum possible time.
