MCA stands firmly with its Pahang youth chief over Bukit Aman probe into mobile data comments, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: MCA will stand firmly by its Pahang Youth chief Wong Siew Mun after she was summoned by police over her comments on the government's collection of mobile phone data, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. The MCA president said that the party would also provide legal assistance to Wong in her efforts to champion the people's right to freedom of expression. Wong had statement recorded on Wednesday (June 18) over a video she posted recently that questioned an order by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to access mobile phone data of users from telecommunication companies. Dr Wee said Wong's comments were based on a report published by news portal South China Morning Post. "She had called me at 2pm today to tell me that she had just finished giving his statement at the Bukit Aman police headquarters before she headed off to a nearby restaurant," said Dr Wee on Facebook on Wednesday. He said Wong was accompanied by her lawyer Kamarudin Ahmad and had her statement recorded by police between 11.15am and 1.15pm. Wee said he was informed that Siew Mun was being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for allegedly circulating a statement that may cause public alarm and misuse of network facilities, respectively. He said police also seized her mobile phone. We said MCA Information Bureau chairman and Wanita MCA secretary-general Chan Quin Er together with the MCA Youth leadership and legal experts were also present at Bukit Aman in a show of solidarity for Siew Mun.
