Second man charged after Rotorua man's death in alleged hit-and-run
A second person has been arrested and charged in relation to a fatal alleged hit-and-run in Rotorua last week. A motorcyclist allegedly overtook a stationary vehicle and struck Paige Johnson as he was crossing Edmund Rd in Mangakakahi at around 2.15pm on June 15. Johnson, who was sight- and hearing-impaired, died in hospital on June 19. Following a 10-day search and several public appeals for information, police yesterday arrested a 31-year-old man in Hamilton. He was expected to appear in the Hamilton District Court today charged with manslaughter, failing to stop to ascertain injury or death, and driving while disqualified. ADVERTISEMENT Police said today a 55-year-old man was also arrested at a Rotorua address yesterday and charged with being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter. He was also due to appear in the Rotorua District Court today. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Van Kempen said the 55-year-old also faced charges unrelated to the fatal crash, alleging staff discovered ammunition, cannabis and stolen property during a search warrant. Photo: Supplied / Police A motorcyclist has been charged with manslaughter and failing to stop after the death of a pedestrian in Rotorua earlier this month. Paige Johnson, 24, died in hospital after the crash on Edmund Road on 15 June. Police earlier said the motorcyclist overtook a stationary car at about 2.15pm, hitting Johnson, after the car stopped for him to cross at a designated pedestrian crossing. Police conducted search warrants in Hamilton and Rotorua today, and arrested a 31-year-old Hamilton man. He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow, charged with manslaughter, failing to stop to ascertain injury or death, and driving while disqualified. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Van Kempen said police hoped the arrest would provide some relief to Johnson's family. "We still have a long way to go, but today's arrest marks an important milestone in our investigation, and the public has played a significant part in today's arrest. "What happened on 15 June was a tragedy and was felt through our community, and I want to thank everyone who has assisted us throughout the investigation." Police reveal where motorcyclist drove after hit and run, release name of victim

Photo: Supplied / Police Police have released more information about the motorcyclist who hit a pedestrian in Rotorua before driving off . The pedestrian, who later died in hospital, was 24-year-old Paige Johnson from Rotorua. Police continue to hunt for the motorcyclist, and are appealing for help from the public. They believe he is male, with a distinctive full-length tattoo on his left leg and that he was riding a black and gold Kawasaki Ninja 600cc. CCTV footage provided by the public has helped police build a picture of his movements after the collision. The motorbike is seen travelling from Edmund Road on to Clayton Road, then along Thomas Road and in to Gordon Road, heading east. The motorcyclist police say was involved in a fatal hit and run. Photo: Supplied / Police Detective Senior Sergeant Mark van Kempen, Rotorua CIB, says a significant police presence has been in and around this area on Tuesday, and police have been speaking with residents and gathering further information. "The response has been extremely positive, with several valuable pieces of information being received. "Police are also continuing to support Paige's family, who are devastated by his loss. "Both Paige's family and Police reiterate our appeal to anyone with knowledge of this incident, the motorcycle, or its rider to contact Police - either directly or anonymously via Crime Stoppers." Van Kempen says police are asking the motorcyclist to come forward and do the right thing for their own sake and for a grieving family. "We know Paige's death will likely be weighing heavily on this person and it is important that we speak to them to understand the full picture of what occurred." Anyone assisting people involved in the incident in a way that intentionally hinders the police investigation could have serious consequences, he said.
