Pakistani troops kill 14 militants in raid in northwest region near Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD, June 4, (AP): Pakistan's security forces raided a militant hideout and killed 14 insurgents during a shootout in the country's northwest, the military said Wednesday. The overnight raid was conducted on the reported presence of Pakistani Taleban belonging to an Indian proxy in North Waziristan, a district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said in a statement. New Delhi did not immediately comment. Pakistan's military said sanitization operations are being conducted to eliminate Pakistani Taleban groups it says are sponsored by India. Pakistani authorities often accuse India of backing outlawed Baloch Liberation Army and Pakistani Taleban groups that commit violence in Pakistan. The accusations have intensified since May in the wake of heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed nations. There has been a cross-border escalation between the countries over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, which is divided between the two but sought in its entirety by each. The Pakistani Taleban, which calls itself Tehrik-e-Taleban Pakistan, or TTP, has been emboldened since its allies, the Afghan Taleban, returned to power in 2021. Many TTP leaders and fighters have taken sanctuary in Afghanistan.

Thousands protest after a suspected drone strike kills 4 children in Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan, May 20, (AP): A suspected drone strike killed four children and wounded five others in Pakistan's restive northwest, prompting thousands of residents to stage a protest by placing the children's bodies on a main road to demand justice, local elders said on Tuesday. It was unclear who was behind Monday's attack in Mir Ali, which has been a stronghold of Pakistani Taleban, and there was no comment from the army about the incident. "We are not blaming anyone, but we want justice, and the government should tell us who killed our children,' local tribal elder Mufti Baitullah said. He warned that the protest, currently staged at one regional roadblock, could expand if authorities fail to answer. "We will not bury the bodies until we are told who is responsible for killing our innocent children,' he said, as people chanted "we want justice.' The civilian casualties came amid ongoing military operations against the Pakistani Taliban, which have a strong presence in Mir Ali, a city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, are a separate insurgent group from the Afghan Taliban, and they often target troops in the region. Nayak Muhammad Dawar, a provincial minister, condemned the attack in a statement Tuesday. He said investigations were ongoing. Mir Ali and nearby districts located near Afghanistan were long a base for the Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups. The TTTP have stepped up attacks in the region in recent months.

Pakistani Taleban kill two police officers in night raid in northwest
An overnight raid on a police checkpoint claimed by the Pakistani Taleban killed two officers, police said on Thursday, while one more remains missing after being abducted in the northwest. More than 1,600 people were killed in attacks in Pakistan last year which was the deadliest in almost a decade according to the Centre for Research and Security Studies, an Islamabad-based analysis group. Around 10 militants attacked the checkpoint near Karak city in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province around 1am, police official Nazar Muhammad said. "Two police officers stationed at the checkpoint were martyred, and six others were injured," he said. Local administrative official Misbah Uddin also confirmed the number of dead and wounded. "The terrorists used heavy weaponry, including mortar shells, during the assault," he said. On Wednesday, an officer was travelling home from his police station elsewhere in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa when armed men stopped his car and "abducted him", according to local police official Sajjad Ali. The Pakistani Taleban — which shares a common ideology and lineage with the Afghan Taleban — claimed responsibility for both the checkpoint attack and the kidnapping. They have waged a decades-long insurgency in Pakistan's regions bordering Afghanistan. Violence has surged in those regions since the Taliban surged back to power in 2021. Pakistan has accused the Taleban government of failing to root out militants who launch attacks from Afghan soil, a charge it routinely denies. On Sunday, armed militants killed four members of Pakistan's security forces in an attack on their vehicle in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The day before, separatist militants claimed responsibility for a huge raid killing 18 state paramilitaries in southwestern Balochistan province. According to AFP data 38 people, mainly security officials, have been killed in instances of militant and anti-state violence in Pakistan since the beginning of this year.
