Zohran Mamdani rips NYC Councilwoman Vickie Paladino's ‘extremist' call for his deportation
NEW YORK — Zohran Mamdani, a leading progressive candidate for NYC mayor, ripped conservative City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino on Tuesday for suggesting he should be deported from the U.S. for his political views, calling her comment 'a reflection' of how President Donald Trump has emboldened 'extremists.' Paladino, one of the Council's most right-leaning members, lobbed the attack late Monday, claiming on X it's 'insane' that Mamdani was elected to the state Assembly in 2020 even though he had been a U.S. citizen for less than a decade and is 'a radical leftist who actually hates everything about the country.' 'Deport,' Paladino concluded the post, which included photos of Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. In a statement on Tuesday, Mamdani, who is Muslim, said he has since launching his mayoral campaign in October been 'targeted with death threats, Islamophobic attacks against me and my family, and now, a sitting New York City Councilmember is calling for my deportation.' 'This isn't just hateful rhetoric — it's a reflection of what happens when Donald Trump's authoritarian administration is allowed to shove New Yorkers into unmarked vehicles, tear our communities apart and spit in the face of the Constitution,' Mamdani said, a reference to the Trump administration's recent deportation raids at courthouses in the city. 'But let me be clear: New York belongs to all of us. The MAGA extremists may try to divide us, but the movement we've built is proof of the enduring promise of this city. And we're not going anywhere.' Mamdani, a socialist running on a platform that includes a promise to freeze rent for stabilized tenants, has consistently been polling as the runner-up candidate in the June 24 Democratic mayoral primary. Some recent polls suggest front-runner Andrew Cuomo's lead over Mamdani is narrowing as the primary looms just weeks away. Mayor Eric Adams — who dropped out of the Democratic primary after the Trump administration secured a controversial dismissal of his corruption indictment in April — declined to comment on Paladino's post during his weekly press conference Tuesday. 'I am not going to point out one specific comment, when I said over and over again: We all need to tone down our rhetoric,' he said, before turning to reporters in the room: 'I think many of you should have toned down some of the stuff you wrote about me over these last few years. I condemn a lot of stuff that you guys have said about me.' _____

Mayor refuses to condemn Council Member's call to deport Zohran Mamdani
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Mayor Eric Adams stopped short of condemning a council member's post suggesting state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, a U.S. citizen who is running for mayor, be deported. Brooklyn City Council Member Vickie Paladino posted to X on Monday, calling his politics 'radical' and questioning his ability for office. More Local News 'Let's just talk about how insane it is to elect someone to any major office who hasn't even been a US citizen for ten years—much less a radical leftist who actually hates everything about the country,' Paladino wrote. 'Deport.' When asked about Paladino's remarks Tuesday, Adams suggested everyone needs to tone down their rhetoric, not just Paladino. 'I am not going to point out one specific comment… We all need to tone down our rhetoric,' Adams said. 'Everybody needs to tone down their mean-spirit, hateful language. And I'm not going to point out Council Member Paladino. I want to point us all out.' Mamdani, who became a naturalized citizen in 2018, said Paladino's remarks are a reflection of President Donald Trump's 'authoritarian' deportation efforts in New York City. This, along with death threats and Islamophobic attacks, won't slow his campaign down, Mamdani said. 'The MAGA extremists may try to divide us, but the movement we've built is proof of the enduring promise of this city,' he said. 'And we're not going anywhere.' NYC pol trashes city for pushing 'disgusting' compost pails
Reduce, reuse . . . repurpose! One Queens politician has some creative ideas on how to make the most of the thousands of composting buckets the city is dumping on New Yorkers — as some of her colleagues in the City Council whine that it needs millions more in taxpayer dollars to fund the program. 'What better way to spend your taxpayer dollars than to put this ugly, disgusting thing on your counter so that you can collect your garbage scraps,' Queens GOP Councilwoman Vickie Paladino railed in a video on X after the city unloaded 150 of the plastic countertop buckets at her office. 5 Councilwoman Vickie Paladino said the plastic buckets have 101 uses in addition to collecting compost. 'Luckily they have lots of other uses, because nobody is actually going to compost and we all know it,' she wrote. 'So if you don't want a bucket of rotting food garbage on your countertop feel free to use them for the beach or as little beer coolers or whatever.' The mini pails are to collect food waste in the kitchen before putting it at the curb in yet another designated new bin or taking it for drop-off. 'If people want to use them for what they're meant for, that's fine,' Paladino told The Post. 'But our little composting bins have got 101 uses.' 'My kids will love this for the playground sprinkler!' one mom joked on X. 5 NYC's Zero Waste initiative includes a mandatory composting program where residents must separate food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard waste from their trash. NYC Sanitation/ X 'I need a few of those for my classroom to store supplies in,' a teacher chimed in. Constituents lined up down the block to get their pail, Paladino said, some planning to use it for gardening and BBQ tools this summer. One user on X noted that the cheap-looking buckets looked like they were ordered off the Chinese e-commerce site Temu. 5 The mini pails are to collect food waste in the kitchen before putting it at the curb or taking it for drop-off. Joann Ariola NYC Council District 32/ Facebook But the buckets, which are emblazoned with the city Department of Sanitation's composting website, are from the company Orbis, which the city is paying a whopping $9.7 million to provide 'waste bins [and] organic collection,' records show. The same Orbis bins go for about $19 from Home Depot and Amazon, bringing the worth of the 150 dropped off at each of the 51 council members' offices to an estimated $145,350. The composting initiative, which aims to reduce waste and cut greenhouse gas emissions, has been slammed by critics as a hassle and a money grab that costs far more than regular recycling. 5 All 51 NYC Council members received the countertop buckets to distribute to their constituents. New York City Department of Sanitation / Facebook In its first 10 days of enforcement beginning April 1, DSNY handed out 2,462 fines, which started at $25 and reaped at least $61,550. The new mandate prompted so much public outrage and confusion that the fines were suspended until next year. Paladino and her fellow Common Sense Caucus members have argued that it should be voluntary, and introduced a law calling to 'remove organic waste from the city's list of designated recyclable materials.' 5 Paladino and the council's Common Sense Caucus argue the program should be voluntary. Getty Images 'We've got so many problems in the city that need money and need attention, and we could certainly spend our money elsewhere than on how we dispose of our garbage,' Paladino said. Last year, the council forked over $6.25 million in discretionary funds to save community composting, which was threatened by sweeping budget cuts, and is demanding $7 million more to keep the program afloat after it was left out of Mayor Adams' 2026 executive budget. The added cash would 'stabilize operations, expand outreach, and scale capacity,' the council said in a press release on funding gaps in city Department of Sanitation services Monday.
