23 photos of Dundee firefighters include heroes fighting city's biggest blazes

These archive images show Dundee firefighters in the 1980s and 1990s. They show crews battling some of the city's most memorable blazes. These included the 1980 Palais dance hall fire and the £6.4m blaze that reduced the Ashton Works jute mill to a smouldering shell in 1983. The faces of those who fight the flames are also shown. There are pictures of the crew in full uniform and raising money for charity. Enjoy having another browse back through the ages courtesy of The Dundonian, which appears in the Evening Telegraph every Wednesday. Some of these images have not been seen for years. Will they awaken any memories for you? The Palais in South Tay Street opened in 1928 and hosted acts over the decades such as Louis Armstrong, David Bowie and the Bee Gees. It ceased to be the Palais in October 1976 and became Samantha's disco. The blaze on February 20 1980 was known as the day the music died and the iconic entrance of the former ballroom is now all that's left of the old Palais. A mass meeting at Blackness Road Fire Station in November 1980. Over 270 members of the Tayside branch of the Fire Brigade Union attended and overwhelmingly supported industrial action in a national dispute over pay. The fire service workers voted to handle emergency calls only. Flames and thick smoke trapped 15 tenants as 30 firefighters battled to contain a blaze at the multi-storey block at Butterburn Court in March 1983. Some were hanging from the top windows, calling for help and waving blankets. Firefighters fought for more than an hour to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters at work on the roof of a lab in the University of Dundee after a fire. The incident happened in April 1983. Ashton Works was destroyed following a devastating fire in September 1983 that caused the equivalent of £6.4m of damage in today's money. More than 60 firefighters battled for more than three hours to contain the blaze. A German-registered coaster, the Sabine, collided with the Tay Road Bridge in heavy rain and fog in October 1984. Firefighters were at Dundee docks after the vessel returned to the harbour. The Fountain Disco in Brown Street offered Dundee clubbers cheap drinks, pounding chart music and the best light show in Scotland. Tragedy struck on June 25 1985 when fire ripped through the upper floor and completely destroyed the roof. It reopened in April 1986 following repairs and improvements. A firefighter being sprayed with water to decontaminate following a disaster simulation exercise at Dundee Airport in October 1989. The full-scale emergency response was scrambled following a mock crash between two light aircraft that left nine people 'killed' and 17 with 'serious injuries'. Exercises of this sort became an annual event. A mock fire exercise at the Wellgate Centre in November 1989. Dummies were used and the aim of the simulation was to test the ability of firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to penetrate deep into the burning area Ian Johnston and Morris Anderson undertaking a training drill with a hose in February 1991 at the Macalpine Road Fire Station. The station opened in November 1990. The new building replaced the Northern Fire Station at Strathmore Avenue. Long service awards recipients at Blackness Road Station in February 1991. The Long Service and Good Conduct Medal is awarded under Royal Warrant to full time, retained and volunteer staff who have completed 20 years' service. A simulated rail crash between a passenger train and chemical-carrying tanker was staged at the northern approach to the Tay Rail Bridge in September 1991. A ScotRail carriage was derailed to add realism. The simulated crash resulted in 10 fatalities, which were all dummies. Blue Iris was the first large-scale civil emergency exercise to be carried out in Tayside since town and village were lumped together under regionalisation in 1975. Part of the exercise involved the simulated evacuation of 160 nearby residents whose homes were affected by toxic fumes from the rail tanker. National Fire Safety Week arrived in the Murraygate in October 1991. Firefighters were spreading the message outside a portable fire safety awareness unit. Senior officers getting in some practise at Macalpine Road Fire Station in August 1993. They were getting ready to pull a 10-ton fire engine 100 metres in as short a time as possible to raise money for the Ninewells Cancer Research Appeal. Station Officer Jim Pearson retired from MacAlpine Road in May 1994. He received a crystal figurine from Divisional Officer Alexander MacPherson. Remember the Zapp Zone at the Megabowl in Lochee? Firefighters were showing off how a thermal imaging camera works in June 1994. A new helmet was introduced in Tayside featuring a visor. Bruce Henderson and Fraser Cochrane were comparing the old and new helmet at Blackness Road Fire Station in September 1995. Bruce, at the back, was modelling the new version. Forty firefighters with eight appliances were involved in Exercise Grandstand at Dundee United's Tannadice Park home ground in August 1996. The mock test was to keep them up to scratch on dealing with incidents at stadia. A new Comet store opened at the Milton of Craigie retail park in November 1999. The previous store suffered £200,000 of damage in an extensive fire in February with 35 firefighters involved in the emergency operation. The new store was opened by Fireman Sam and his Dundee colleagues. It's the final image in our gallery of Dundee firefighters. Did you recognise anyone? Let us know.

‘Awards Chatter' Pod: Sissy Spacek on Her J.Law Collab ‘Die My Love,' the ‘New Hollywood' of the '70s and the Penises in ‘Dying for Sex'

For the fourth annual recording of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast in front of an audience in the Campari Lounge of the Palais during the Cannes Film Festival, the legendary actress Sissy Spacek joined yours truly for an hourlong conversation about her remarkable life and career. Spacek, a youthful 75, reflected on her journey from small-town Texas to Hollywood (and then to a farm in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she has resided since 1982); her involvement in the 'New Hollywood' of the '70s and early '80s, including massively acclaimed performances in 1973's Badlands, 1976's Carrie, 1977's Three Women, 1980's Coal Miner's Daughter (which brought her a best actress Oscar) and 1982's Missing; and the recently deceased filmmaker David Lynch, a childhood friend of Spacek's husband Jack Fisk and a friend of hers for some 50 years, whose breakthrough 1977 film, Eraserhead, she and Fisk helped to finance, and in whose 1999 film The Straight Story she starred. More from The Hollywood Reporter Billy Joel Shares Brain Disorder Diagnosis 'Lilo & Stitch' Now Soaring to Record $170M-$180M Memorial Day Box Office Bow Pop Star King Princess Didn't Think She Could Be an Actress (Then She Talked to a Psychic) She also discussed her latest project, Lynne Ramsay's Die My Love, which premiered in competition at Cannes just hours after this conversation took place, and which shortly thereafter was acquired by Mubi in the biggest sale of the festival. In the dark drama, Spacek plays the wife of a character played by Nick Nolte (with whom she previously acted in 1980's Heart Beat and 1997's Affliction), the mother of a character played by Robert Pattinson and the mother-in-law of a woman in the throes of severe post-partum depression, played by fellow Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence. Die My Love brought about Spacek's first trip to the Cannes Film Festival in 26 years, following three previous visits, each in different decades — for Three Women, Missing and The Straight Story. The general consensus at the fest was that Spacek's performance in the new film could bring her the seventh Oscar nomination of her career, which would be her first first in 24 years, and her first ever in the category of best supporting actress. Her earlier noms, all in the best actress category, came for Carrie, Coal Miner's Daughter, Missing, 1984's The River, 1986's Crimes of the Heart and 2001's In the Bedroom. Only six living women have accumulated seven or more acting Oscar noms: Meryl Streep (21), Cate Blanchett (8), Judi Dench (8), Glenn Close (8), Jane Fonda (7) and Kate Winslet (7). Widespread French power outage shuts down Cannes Festival theater, closing ceremony expected to continue

A suspicious fire hit the city of Cannes with a widespread loss of power Saturday morning — just hours ahead of the film festival's closing ceremony. Several movies were wiped from the schedule, but the majority of the iconic event, including the final bash, will not be affected because organizers swiftly found an alternative power source. 'A power outage is currently affecting the city of Cannes and surrounding areas,' the festival said in a statement shared with The Post. 'The Palais des Festivals has switched to an independent power supply, allowing all scheduled events and screenings, including the Closing Ceremony, to proceed as planned and under normal conditions. 'However, screenings at the Cineum have been temporarily suspended and will resume as soon as power is restored.' What caused the widespread outrage has not been identified, but police suspect arson. 'We are looking into the likelihood of a fire being started deliberately,' said a spokesperson for the French national gendarmerie. No arrests have been made. The power was cut across much of the Alpes-Maritimes region in southern France, including Cannes. The power went out shortly after 10 a.m., including in festival theaters that were in the midst of screening films. Internet was also down across the city, with the outage reportedly reaching as far as 6 miles outside of Cannes. It is not clear how long the Cineum Imax theater at the festival will remain affected — 17 films were slated to be screened at the venue today, including two movies starring Josh O'Conner, 'The Mastermind' and 'The History of Sound,' the latter also starring Paul Mescal. Organizers expect to dole out the coveted Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) for best film, along with other awards like the Grand Prix and Jury Prize, during the closing ceremony. With Post Wires

Richard Linklater Stuns Cannes as ‘Nouvelle Vague' Earns Rapturous 6.5 Minute Standing Ovation and Lots of Love From Quentin Tarantino

Richard Linklater's French New Wave tribute 'Nouvelle Vague' was always going to find a perfect home at Cannes, and such is the case following the period drama's rapturous world premiere in competition at the 2025 festival. The film earned a rousing six-and-half-minute standing ovation as the cast hugged each other and leading lady Zoey Deutch blowed kisses to the audience. The 'Nouvelle Vague' premiere was a spirited affair from the start. Linklater and cast member Zoey Deutch were spotted singing along and dancing on the red carpet as they ascended the iconic stairs at the Palais. Before the film started, Linklater hugged and chatted briefly with Quentin Tarantino. The 'Pulp Fiction' director, who has premiered several movies at Cannes, enthusiastically clapped for Linklater during the standing ovation. Tarantino was visibly moved by the film. Over a year ago we were filming right here,' Linklater told the crowd as the standing ovation came to an end. 'And we all said: 'wouldn't it be amazing if we could end up here showing our movie. It would be crazy to be here.' And here we are! Cinema is magic. It meant so much to us to try and recreate the time and place. It means so much in film history, and it meant so much to each cast member, every crew member. Everybody worked so hard to try and get it right and recreate this moment. And thank you for this moment.' In 'Nouvelle Vague,' Linklater chronicles the making of Jean-Luc Godard's French New Wave classic 'Breathless.' Guillaume Marbeck stars as the iconic French filmmaker, with Deutch playing the movie's leading lady, Jean Seberg, and Aubry Dullin starring as the film's male star Jean-Paul Belmondo. The movie is Linklater's first project shot in French. Critics were just as enthusiastic about the movie as the premiere audience. Variety's Owen Gleiberman called the movie a highlight of the 2025 festival, writing: 'Guillaume Marbeck is so perfect as Jean-Luc Godard he's uncanny. And so is the whole movie.'Linklater has often cited Godard as one of his biggest inspirations, making 'Nouvelle Vague' a passion project for him. Speaking to press last year, Linklater said that Godard taught him an 'absolute love and dedication to cinema. That cinema is its own world that's worthy of reverence to treat as an elevated, all-encompassing, devote-your-life-to art form. That's what I'm trying to conjure in that movie. Just to show the absolute love of cineastes.' Linklater is proving to be a major festival player this year. He attended the Berlin International Film Festival in February to unveil another movie, the Lorenz Hart biographical music drama 'Blue Moon,' starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley and Andrew Scott. The movie earned strong reviews and won Scott the Silver Bear for supporting performance. Sony Pictures Classics is set to release 'Blue Moon' in theaters later this year. Linklater's other recent movies include 'Hit Man' with Glen Powell, which premiered at Venice in 2023 on its way to Netflix streaming success.
