Amnesty International urges global rejection of Israel's weaponised aid plan in Gaza

GENEVA: Amnesty International has called on countries worldwide to reject the so-called "aid plan" used by Israel as a weapon in the Gaza Strip, urging concrete international action to end the ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people. The organisation in a statement released Tuesday condemned the international community for allowing the catastrophe and genocide in Gaza to persist for far too long, emphasising that the deliberate starvation of civilians constitutes a war crime that must be halted immediately, Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported. Amnesty International also stressed that Israel, as the occupier, is legally obligated under international law to ensure the provision of essential supplies to the population. The organisation described recent gunfire against starving Palestinians near an aid distribution site in Rafah as a horrific incident demanding an immediate and independent investigation. – Bernama-WAFA

MADRID, May 30 (Bernama-WAFA) -- Spain and Slovenia called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the imposition of sanctions on Israel, during a joint press conference held Thursday in Madrid by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his Slovenian counterpart Robert Golob. According to Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA), Sánchez stated that both governments agree on suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, imposing an arms embargo, and enacting sanctions against individual Israeli officials. He emphasised that Spain and Slovenia share a common stance on the humanitarian catastrophe facing the Palestinian people. He also reaffirmed that their formal recognition of the State of Palestine nearly a year ago was grounded in a commitment to human rights and international law.

Gaza death toll surges to 53,339 amid ongoing Israeli genocide

GAZA — At least 67 Palestinians were killed and 361 others were injured in the Gaza Strip over the last 24 hours as a result of the ongoing Israeli genocide in the region, the Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported citing medical sources. Local health authorities confirmed that the Palestinian death toll from the Israeli onslaught since October 2023 has risen to 53,339 fatalities, with an additional 121,043 people sustaining injuries. The majority of the victims are women and children. According to the same sources, the death toll since Israel's resumption of the genocide on March 18 after a two-month truce has also climbed to 3,193, in addition to 8,993 others injured. Emergency services are still unable to reach many casualties and dead bodies trapped under the rubble or scattered on roads across the war-torn enclave, as Israeli occupation forces continue to target ambulance and civil defense crews, according to the health authorities. Israel's genocidal onslaught continues undeterred despite calls from the United Nations Security Council for an immediate ceasefire and directives from the International Court of Justice urging measures to prevent genocide and alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. — BERNAMA-WAFA

Macron: ituation in Gaza is 'unacceptable and horrific'

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday described the situation in the Gaza Strip as an 'unacceptable and horrific humanitarian tragedy,' demanding an end to it, the Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported, citing local media. In an interview with French television channel TF1, Macron, who appeared moved after a video of an emergency doctor describing the tragic situation in Gaza, said, 'There is no water, no medicine, the wounded cannot be evacuated: what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is doing is a disgrace.' He called for pressure to be applied on Israel and for a review of its partnership agreements with the European Union. When journalist Gilles Bouleaux asked him about the use of the term 'genocide,' Macron maintained his reserved position: 'It is not the role of politicians to use this term; it is up to historians to do so at the appropriate time.' For his part, French Ambassador to the United Nations Jérôme Bonnafont condemned the planned extension of Israeli operations in the Gaza Strip, stating that his country opposes the aid distribution mechanism proposed by Israel and calls on it to immediately lift obstacles to humanitarian supplies and the work of relief workers in Gaza.

UN spokesperson says ‘food supplies in Gaza are dangerously low'

NEW YORK: UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said Wednesday night that the UN humanitarian aid operations in Gaza can only be conducted in accordance with the principles of humanity, neutrality, and independence, Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported. He was responding to a question about reports that Israeli Defence Minister Yisrael Katz had stated at a meeting of the Security Cabinet on Tuesday (April 22) that aid in Gaza would be distributed by the military or American companies. He added, "UN humanitarian operations in Gaza or anywhere else in the world can only be conducted in accordance with the principles of humanity, neutrality, and independence." He noted that food supplies are "dangerously low" throughout Gaza, and that cases of malnutrition are rapidly increasing. Dujarric emphasised that living conditions throughout Gaza are "appalling." He said that 75% of the population is exposed to open sewage and waste, causing extremely serious health problems. Dujarric called on influential member states to take the necessary measures to ensure that humanitarian aid can once again reach Gaza and be distributed to those in need. - Bernama
