Denzel Washington ‘emotional' after receiving surprise award at Cannes

Denzel Washington was genuinely stunned after receiving a career achievement award at the Cannes Film Festival. The two-time Oscar winner and American Conservatory Theater alum made a brief stop in France on Monday, May 19, for the world premiere of Spike Lee's 'Highest 2 Lowest.' When Washington and Lee were onstage, festival director Thierry Frémaux surprised the Oscar winner with an honorary Palm D'Or. Washington, 70, is only the 21st person to receive the award at perhaps the most important film festival in the world. 'This is a total surprise for me, so I'm emotional,' Washington told the crowd. 'It's a great opportunity to collaborate with my brother once again, my brother from another mother, Spike, and to be here once again in Cannes. 'We're a very privileged group in this room that we get to make movies and wear tuxedos and nice clothes and dress up and get paid for it as well. We're just blessed beyond measure. I'm blessed beyond measure. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.' 'Highest 2 Lowest,' a morally complex ransom thriller that is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 classic 'High and Low,' is the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington but the first in nearly two decades. Washington, who studied at ACT's prestigious San Francisco training program in the late '70s, is currently starring on Broadway opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Shakespeare's 'Othello,' so the 'Highest 2 Lowest' premiere was scheduled for Monday — traditionally an off-day for Broadway productions. 'Highest 2 Lowest' will be released in theaters Aug. 22 before streaming on Apple TV+ beginning Sept. 5.

Catherine Zeta Jones' daughter Carys Douglas' sheer Cannes gown that would be banned in 2025

The Cannes Film Festival sent shockwaves around the fashion world this week when it announced that "for decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival." On top of the ban on naked dresses, as seen on Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid on the Cannes red carpet, the festival added: "voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted". With this in mind, we immediately realised that the iconic dress worn by Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas' daughter, Carys Douglas, in 2023 would no longer be appropriate. For the 2023 film festival, Carys donned a cut-out floral dress with sheer panels. The princess-worthy gown was a backless design, with crossover straps across her shoulders. While it didn't flout the voluminous rule thanks to the fairly humble skirt, the figure-baring nature of the dress likely wouldn't fly with the new rules. Carys wore the dress during the event to honour which saw her father receive the lifetime achievement award, with the Hollywood offspring calling the soiree "the most wonderful evening!" She added: "It was an honor to celebrate my father as he received his lifetime achievement Palm D'Or. Bon festival!" Michael is equally proud of his daughter, who celebrated her 22nd birthday in April. He shared a photo of her, marking a double celebration, writing: "Happy Birthday my darling daughter Carys! Congratulations on graduation! I am proud of you." Catherine marked the day too, sharing three photos of her daughter, one in the Cannes dress of dreams. "Happy Birthday to my darling daughter Carys. 22 today!!! You are the joy of my life. I love you to Neptune and back. May this year bring you everything you dream of," Catherine wrote. The blanket ban on naked dresses at Cannes has ruffled feathers in both the fashion and film worlds, with HELLO! Fashion's Fashion Features Writer Tania Leslau saying of the decision: "The nudity ban seems like a subtle weaponisation of the female body, as if it's something to fear rather than honour. "While I'm not a fan of cheaply-made 'barely-there' dresses à la Shein, nudity (when done well) can be a celebration of the female form (Think Kate Moss' iconic sheer 90s slip dress.) Lee McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Tom Ford all incorporated elements of nudity into their collections, creating a mix of shock and sensuality. "Nudity on the red carpet can help to reclaim the female body - which for so long has been objectified in the media," she concludes. As the festival goes on, we look forward to seeing how the stars take to the new rule.

Émilie Dequenne death: Award-winning Rosetta actor and The Missing star dies, aged 43

Belgian actor Émilie Dequenne has died aged 43. The star revealed she had been diagnosed with a rare cancer of the adrenal gland (adrenocortical carcinoma), in 2023. She died in a hospital just outside of Paris on Sunday (16 March), her family and agent confirmed. Dequenne first shot to fame as an 18-year-old for her role in Rosetta in 1999. The coming-of-age drama directed by the Dardenne Brothers earned her an award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the movie winning a Palm D'Or. She returned to the Festival last year to celebrate 25 years since the achievement. The film was widely believed to have influenced the 'Rosetta Law' prohibiting employers from under-paying young workers, however the directors confirmed that the law existed prior to the release, but had not been passed through at that point. She was best known to British audiences for her performance as police officer Laurence Relaud in the BBC drama The Missing. Dequenne was also awarded for her work in French language films including The Girl on the Train (2009) and Our Children (2012). Her final project was the English-language thriller, Survive, released last year. In one of her final interviews, she told The Action: 'I didn't know I was sick by the time I was shooting the movie, and I got sick almost like six or eight months later. I'm still fighting, I'm still on chemo for now, but I'm okay, I'm okay.' After being diagnosed with the cancer in 2023, she revealed she had been given the all-clear in April 2024 and hoped to return to normality after the ordeal. However, the cancer returned at the end of last year with Dequenne telling French TV: ''I know I will not live as long as planned'. Her last posts include passionate dedications thanking her husband Michel Ferracci for his support. The couple were married in 2014. Dequenne leaves behind a 22-year-old daughter, Milla Savarese, also an actor. In one of her final posts, the star wrote about a 'tough fight' as she shared: 'Today is World Cancer Day. Almost forgot, as I was leaving the hospital today after 13 days. What a tough fight! And we don't choose. 'Just writing these few words is an oversized effort. (By the way, sorry to those whose wishes I didn't answer, while it's February)THANK YOU again to my family (@michelferracci who had the worst night ever), my amazing parents, my friends.'
