Gender reveal: One of the Big Bear bald eaglets is a girl, experts say
The world has watched bald eaglets Sunny and Gizmo grow up at their nest at Big Bear Lake for the past 12 weeks, but their genders have remained a mystery, until now. It is notoriously difficult to identity the sexes of bald eaglet chicks when young, but the avian experts who operate the world-famous, 24-hour live video feed of the nest have announced they are confident that one of the chicks is female. "At this point, from the size compared to Shadow, the ankle size and general behavior, we are pretty sure that Gizmo is a girl," Friends of Big Bear Valley Executive Director Sandy Steers wrote in an update posted to social media. "Her obsession with food is also a sign," Steers added. More: Fledge watch: Big Bear bald eaglets Sunny and Gizmo prepare to take first flights Sunny's sex remains unknown for the time being. The sibling is four days older than Gizmo. "For Sunny, the jury is still out," Steers said. "With more observation and hopefully some vocalization that can be heard... we hope to be more positive about Sunny's gender in the next few days." "Fledge watch" at the Big Bear bald eagle nest is officially underway. The young apex predators have been seen exercising their wings and getting a feel for the wind in recent weeks in preparation for their first excursions out of their nest. More: When will the Big Bear bald eaglets get their iconic white heads, leave the nest? Even after they take to the sky, Sunny and Gizmo are expected to remain close to home for a month or two as they continue honing the skills they will need to survive on their own, according to experts. After that, they will head off to establish new homes of their own, potentially hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Admirers of Jackie, Shadow and the chicks are invited to join FOBBV for a "fan party" next month in Big Bear Lake. The gathering of eagle-eyed fans will take place from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, at Pine Knot Road and Village Drive, organizers said. It will be part of a two-day event dubbed "Adventure Days" on June 21 and 22, which invites guests to join in a host of free outdoor activities ranging from bird watching and flower hikes to boating and Jeep tours, according to FOBBV. All planned activities are free, however, registration for them each day is required and spots may fill up, the group said in a statement. "Our aim is to promote synchronicity between our unique Big Bear Valley natural mountain forest environment and our local business community in ways that allow both to thrive," FOBBV added. Apartment sizes are shrinking in these California cities, report says
Renters looking for a new home in California may be in for a surprise, as one report says apartment sizes are shrinking in many parts of the state. About 45% of California residents are renters, according to the U.S. Census. A report by RentCafe identified the cities with the biggest—and smallest—apartment sizes across the 100 largest renter hubs in the United States as of February 2025. It also found the cities with the most significant square-foot gains over the last 10 years. Overall, the report found that small apartments—one-bedroom and studios, which make up 52% of the national rental market are getting larger, with new studios gaining the most in square footage. Two-bedroom apartments are following a similar trend, while 3-bedroom apartments lost an average of 15 square feet. Southern California rentals shrinking, except for Irvine According to the report, tenants in Southern California are getting cozy in their ever-smaller rentals as apartment sizes trend smaller overall. Los Angeles was ranked No. 16 in the report's top 20 cities with the smallest apartments. The average apartment size in the City of Angels is 789 square feet, compared to the national average of 908 square feet. In San Diego, apartments lost an average of 132 square feet over the past 10 years, while Anaheim lost 100 square feet. One bright spot is Irvine, where two-bedroom homes grew by an average of 90 square feet. San Francisco rentals still small, but they have grown in size The Bay Area, with its heady mix of high-paying technology jobs and high cost of living, offers a mixed bag when it comes to apartment size. Both San Francisco and Oakland made the top 20 of cities with the smallest new apartments, with 716 square feet and 781 square feet, respectively. But for San Francisco, the report also found that the city gained an additional 59 square feet over more than a decade. "This incredible growth is revising an old trend towards smaller living spaces, driven by a surge in the share of two-bedroom apartments," the report states. "Coupled with studios also getting roomier by 70 square feet, it's clear that developers are answering to the demand for more space in the Golden Gate City." Fresno offers the most space in the Central Valley Of all the 100 cities analyzed in the report, Fresno comes out as the California city offering renters the most living space. Located in the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno has an average apartment size of 983 square feet, just over the national average. It came in at No. 14 on the tally of apartment sizes for U.S. cities. Man arrested after stabbing a Palm Springs police officer in the hand
A 41-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after stabbing a police officer in the hand during a disturbance call, the Palm Springs Police Department said. Phillip Smith was taken into custody around 2:40 p.m. on April 22 after officers with the Palm Springs Police Department responded to reports of a "disturbance" in the 1500 block of North Sunrise Way, according to a press release. "Despite the unprovoked attack, officers responded with restraint and used only minimal force to quickly subdue Smith and take him into custody without further incident," the press release said. The police officer was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The police officers were assisting a local nonprofit in removing a person causing a disturbance, according to a Facebook post made by Chief Andy Mills. He noted it was the second time in recent weeks that officers had been assaulted. Smith is expected to face charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. Jennifer Cortez covers education in the Coachella Valley. Interstate 10 through Coachella Valley snarled with multiple accidents
Interstate 10 through the Coachella Valley is rough going for commuters and those headed to Weekend 2 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with brisk winds kicking up dust and traffic accidents closing or blocking lanes for much of the day. Two accidents occurred 10 minutes apart shortly before and after 2 p.m., snarling traffic through the mid-valley. The first was a two-car collision on the freeway headed east just after the Date Palm Drive on ramp, and the second was a rolled-over vehicle on the freeway's west side at Washington Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol's incident log. There were no reported injuries. The accidents came just an hour after all lanes had finally reopened on the westbound Interstate 10, also at Washington Street, after being closed since before 3 a.m. A big rig rolled in that pre-dawn accident, and the driver was injured. A bit further west, a wind advisory is in effect in the Whiteware Canyon area. And at the Banning truck scales, an unidentified flying object flew off an unidentified vehicle at 1:20 pm. Authorities urge caution when driving through blowing dust, including slowing down. This article originally appeared on Palm Springs Desert Sun: Interstate 10 snarled with multiple accidents
