Vinicius comes out in support of compatriot targeted by racist abuse – ‘Let's fight together'
Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. has become a global advocate against racism in football and has always supported players facing slurs from the stands. After all, he himself has been one of the biggest targets of such derogatory chants in recent years and there has not been any tangible decrease in the frequency of such episodes. It is truly shameful that players are being targeted and insulted based on the colour of their skin in today's day and age, and a similar incident occurred in the Brazilian league earlier this week. The said incident occurred during Palmeiras' recent win over Cerro Porteno in the U-20 Copa Libertadores and the player in question was Luighi. It occurred when the player was making his way off the field on the night when some fans who had their differences with him began making monkey gestures and racially abusing him. Luighi was visibly hurt by the events and even went on to cry on the bench, publicly showing the deplorable state of football today where such practices are still not strictly punished. Vinicius Jr, unsurprisingly, came out on his social media in support of Luighi and spoke out again on the need for better policing. 'Congratulations on your position, brother. It's sad, but stay strong. Let's fight together. Until when CONMEBOL? You never do anything! NEVER!!!!!,' he wrote, directly targeting CONMEBOL. The player's gesture, needless to say, will go a long way in comforting Luighi who went through a night no player must ever endure in their career. For Vinicius, meanwhile, it continues to build his image as one of the primary spokespersons against racism and is another step on his lifelong mission of putting an end to the regressive practice.
