Investigation underway after hidden camera found outside Palos Verdes home

Palos Verdes Estates police have launched an investigation after a hidden camera was found outside of a home last week. On Aug. 1, officers were sent to a home on Via Margarita after a resident found a "hidden pouch in a bush located in their front yard," according to a Facebook post from PVEPD. "Upon inspecting the contents of the pouch, officers located a small camera connected to a battery pack," the post said. "These hidden cameras are commonly used by burglary suspects related to South American Theft Groups." Though no suspect information was immediately available, police said they are already investigating and working to find whoever hid the camera. "We're asking all residents to stay alert," said PVEPD's post. "If you find any suspicious items or hidden pouches on your property, please contact us immediately." The department can be reached at (310) 378-4211. This is just the latest instance of a hidden camera being found outside of a Southern California home in recent years. Concealed devices have been found in places like Chino Hills, Temecula, Agoura Hills and West Covina.

This U.S. state has the most wealthy suburbs in the country

A recent study by GOBanking reveals the wealthiest suburbs in the U.S., and it's no surprise that California is home to quite a few of them. For the second year straight, California leads the pack with 17 suburbs making the top 50 list of wealthiest suburbs in 2025, up from 16 'burbs last year. New York and Texas follow behind, but California's grip on luxury living looks unshakable. At the very top of the list is Scarsdale, New York. Crowned the nation's wealthiest suburb for the second year in a row, Scarsdale saw its average household income climb from $588,014 in 2022 to $601,193 in 2023—a 2.2-percent boost. Average home values there also jumped 3.2-percent to $1,207,528 by May 2025. Known for its stately Tudor homes and proximity to Manhattan, Scarsdale stays undefeated. Just behind Scarsdale is Rye, another New York enclave with sky-high incomes and property values. But California flexes real muscle with five of the state's suburbs making the top tier by average household income. Leading them is Los Altos at $403,512, followed closely by newcomer Alamo ($403,334), then Orinda ($369,073), Palos Verdes Estates ($367,178) and Saratoga ($344,319). Texas is also high on the list. Five Lone Star suburbs cracked the top 50, with three landing in the top 10. West University Place, University Park and Southlake all posted impressive income figures. Southlake, notably, jumped from number 13 in 2024 to number seven in 2025—proof that Texas wealth keeps rising. GOBankingRates used data from the U.S. Census 2023 American Community Survey, looking at suburbs (with at least 5,000 households) outside principal cities. They measured factors like average and median household income, population size and home values (sourced from Zillow's May 2025 index) to shape the final ranking. Newcomers this year include Alamo, California and Southlake, Texas in the top 10, plus Coto de Caza, California; Lake Butler, Florida; Colleyville, Texas; Newton, Massachusetts and Brentwood, Tennessee. Together, the numbers paint a clear picture: New York still claims the very top, but California's depth is unmatched, while Texas shows steady upward momentum. For anyone tracking where America's money lives, these wealthy suburbs are the places to watch in 2025. Find the full study here.

Palos Verdes police identify 3 missing people through human remains found on shoreline

The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department has linked the identities of three separate missing person instances to several sets of human remains found along the shoreline, the department announced on Wednesday. A Redondo Beach boater, a man experiencing homelessness and a fisherman who went missing after his boat was discovered crashed, have been identified by a human femur, a human skull and body parts found at the beach and shoreline, starting in 2023. "While the circumstances surrounding each case are heartbreaking, we hope that these identifications provide a measure of peace to the loved ones who have endured uncertainty and loss," PVPD Chief Luke Hellinga said in a statement. A human femur found in 2023 has been linked to missing boater Mark Paulson, who didn't return from a boating trip out of Redondo Beach. In January 2021, search and rescue teams searched to find Paulson, but only his overturned boat was located. He was last heard from reporting engine trouble from his boat, and expressing concern about being blown out to sea, according to PVPD. "Based on the totality of the circumstances, there is no suspicion of foul play. He would have been 68 years old," PVPD wrote in a news release. A human skull that was found at Rat Beach in 2024 was matched through DNA testing to Raymond Simeroth, who would be 57 years old. Investigators determined he was experiencing homelessness and there is no suspicion of foul play linked to his death, police said. In December 2024, a fishing vessel with two men on board was reported missing from San Pedro amid high surf conditions. The two men were hoop-net fishing and their boat was discovered crashed on the Palos Verdes coastline the morning after they departed. The boat two fishermen were inside when they went missing off the coast of Palos Verdes was discovered washed ashore in the area the morning the search began on Dec. 24, 2025. KCAL News Multiple agencies assisted the Los Angeles County Fire Department in searching for the men, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Redondo Beach Fire Department, but they were not found. On Dec. 26, 2024, the day after their boat was found, "two partial sections of lower extremities were located on the shoreline …," PVPD said in a statement. Through DNA matching, the body parts belonged to one of the missing fishermen, 62-year-old Zhaoliang Tang. Police said that no remains have been found associated with the other missing fisherman. "The Palos Verdes Estates Police Department remains committed to thorough investigations that help bring answers and closure to families affected by tragedy," Hellinga said in a statement.

Postal worker robbed at gunpoint in Palos Verdes Estates, USPS keys still missing

Two people were arrested after a U.S. Postal Service worker was robbed at gunpoint in Palos Verdes Estates, officials announced Friday. It was around 5 p.m. on Thursday when the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department received a call reporting the armed robbery on Via Tejon, outside of the U.S. Post Office in Malaga Cove. Officers arrived and spoke with the victim, a USPS postal worker, who said he was gathering mail when one of the two suspects approached him. The suspect purportedly 'displayed a handgun' and demanded the USPS worker's keys and work phone. Police said the suspect took the keys and phone, got into a vehicle and fled the scene. 'About 30 minutes later, PVEPD officers located the suspect vehicle unoccupied and parked in Redondo Beach and conducted surveillance,' said the department in an Instagram post. Around 7:15 p.m., officers watched as a woman got into the suspect vehicle and drove away, followed closely by a second vehicle being driven by a man who police noticed matched the armed robbery suspect description. 'Officers conducted a felony traffic stop on both cars in Redondo Beach and took both suspects into custody without further incident,' said PVEPD. Although both suspects were arrested, police noted that the firearm and the stolen property remain outstanding. 'PVEPD detectives will continue to relentlessly investigate,' said the department's post. 'We would like to recognize the men and women who worked diligently and swiftly on this dynamic situation. Their hard work and dedication led to the arrest of two suspects.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Police investigating possible child-luring attempt in Palos Verdes Estates

Police are investigating reports of a possible child-luring attempt in the Palos Verdes Estates area on Friday. They say that it happened at around 3:45 p.m. in the 2400 block of Via Pacheco, where a 10-year-old boy was walking home from Lunada Bay Elementary School, according to a release from Palos Verdes police. "He was approached by a female driver who offered him a ride twice and stated she would text his mother," the release said. The boy told police that she was the only person he could see inside of the car. He refused her requests, at which time a good Samaritan walking his dog through the area intervened. He asked the boy if he knew the woman. "The child told the good Samaritan that he did not," police said. "The unidentified good Samaritan told the child to go home as he talked to the driver." Police said that the boy made it home safely and reported the incident to his parents, who then contacted them. Arriving officers could not find the suspect or the good Samaritan. They continue to search for both as their investigation remains ongoing. The suspect is described as a woman between 30 and 50 years old with a medium build and brown hair. They believe she was driving a newer-model SUV similar to a Kia EV9. The good Samaritan is descbried as a man in his 70s who was wearing a baseball hat and black sunglasses. He was walking a dog similar to a white Labrador retriever. Police alerted the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District of the incident. "We take the safety of our children seriously and urge parents to remain vigilant, talk with their children about safety, and report any suspicious activity," police said in a statement. "We also ask that if you see something, say something. The PVEPD continues to investigate the incident. Let's work together to keep our community safe." Anyone who knows more is urged to contact detectives at (310) 378-4211.
