One-stop community hub offers free services in North Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A one-stop community hub offering free services, including health, education, and legal support to Southern Nevada residents, opened its doors on Tuesday in North Las Vegas. The Dolores Huerta Resource Center is named after the well-known labor activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association. The center is expected to serve more than 2,000 residents annually and offers services in both English and Spanish. Services will also include free educational classes, health services, legal workshops, technology training, workforce development courses, and cultural events. 'It's more than a building – it's a vital resource for our community, one that will continue the legacy of empowerment and inclusion championed by its namesake, Dolores Huerta,' North Las Vegas Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown said. The center was funded in part through $1.6 million in federal Community Project Funding. 'As the largest minority-majority city in Nevada, we recognize North Las Vegas residents have a wide range of unique needs,' Director of Community Services and Engagement Wilson Ramos said. 'By bringing critical resources under one roof, we're breaking down barriers and creating pathways for North Las Vegas families to thrive.' The Just One Project, a local non-profit organization known for its innovative solutions to food insecurity and housing support, operates the center. Several other non-profit organizations will also help serve community needs at the center. The Dolores Huerta Resource Center, which is located at 1737 Hunkins Drive near Lake Mead Boulevard and Civic Center, is open Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. North Las Vegas recognized with ‘Tree City USA' designation

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — North Las Vegas officials announced on Wednesday the city has earned 'Tree City USA' status in recognition of its efforts to increase the number of trees in parks, along trails and in other public places in recent years. The city is currently conducting a tree inventory, a shade tree canopy study and working on an Urban Forest Management Plan, according to a news release. The efforts are aimed at reducing the heat island effect. 'We have taken major steps in North Las Vegas to cool our community with planting of trees,' Director of Parks and Recreation Doug Guild said. 'Our goal is to plant and maintain trees to reach maturity, which is when the real benefit of trees pays off.' Trees help mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality and boost mental and physical health, the news release said. They can also reduce traffic noise, increase property values and lower energy costs for homeowners. The Arbor Day Foundation approved 'Tree City USA' status after the city met four requirements: A professional forester on staff A public tree care ordinance Spending of at least $2 per capita towards tree care and planting Annual observation of Arbor Day (Friday, April 25, this year) On April 8, North Las Vegas gave away about 100 trees at an event at Prentiss Walker Park. 'Trees are essential to the health and well-being of our community, and through our Municipal Forestry program, we're making significant strides to provide shade and reduce the heat island effect,' Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown said. 'This recognition is an honor, and we remain dedicated to growing a thriving urban forest that enhances the quality of life for our residents and supports future generations in North Las Vegas.' North Las Vegas mayor shares vision for city's growth and renewal

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The city of North Las Vegas held its State of the City address on Thursday. The event focused on the city's accomplishments, upcoming projects, the mayor's vision for the future, and her plan for North Las Vegas to be a 'complete city.' 'A city that provides every opportunity our residents need to prosper and achieve their dreams without ever needing to leave home,' Mayor Pamela Goynes-Brown said. City leaders said their goal is to revitalize the city and keep up with the growth and demand of residents. 'Revitalization in terms of community investment in some of the older parts of our community, in our parks, in law enforcement, in public safety. We're making strategic investments in all those areas,' Mayor Pro Tempore and Councilman for Ward 3 Scott Black said. In her address, Mayor Goynes-Brown said the city is laying out six strategic goals: innovative, efficient, and stable government; infrastructure enhancement; community safety; economic growth; community health and well-being; and community identity and engagement. Each goal is intended to further invest in the community, including new developments, amenities, and services. 'Lots of downtown redevelopment projects of our VA hospital, of our Tule Springs area,' Mayor Goynes-Brown said. 'Just revitalizing the whole core of the city. Lots more amenities that our residents need and want.' 'With the residents, services they can see, feel, and participate in. Recreation opportunities, investments in parks,' Councilman Black added. The city also plans to invest in affordable housing for residents and grow safety partnerships across the city to protect the quality of life. 'We want people to feel safe in their neighborhoods… so that people are comfortable and they're proud to call North Las Vegas home,' Mayor Goynes-Brown said. A home where residents and businesses have opportunities to thrive. 'Just a city where people love to come home, and I just want them to come on home, but they have to have the amenities that they need focusing on living, working, and playing right here in this community so that they never have to leave, ' Mayor Goynes-Brown said. North Las Vegas is home to nearly 300,000 residents. It is the largest minority-majority city in Nevada and the fastest-growing city in the state. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
