Gujarat: AMC to crackdown on unregistered pets after dog mauls baby
Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is moving to tighten regulations on pet ownership in the city, in the wake of a tragic incident in the Hathijan area, where a four-month-old baby girl was mauled by a pet dog. Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, who chaired a high-level meeting following the incident, has directed officials to draft a strict policy targeting unregistered pet dog owners. He has also issued instructions to seize dogs belonging to individuals who fail to comply with mandatory registration norms. According to the AMC, over 5,000 pet owners in Ahmedabad have formally registered their dogs. However, the actual number of pet dogs in the city is believed to be significantly higher. In light of this, the Commissioner has called for a comprehensive survey to determine the true extent of pet ownership across various wards. The proposed policy will include heavy penalties for residents, particularly those in housing societies, flats, and apartments, who keep unregistered pet dogs. Pani emphasised that the framework should mirror the city's existing cattle control policy, ensuring better regulation and safety for all citizens. 'The goal is to enforce accountability among pet owners and avoid incidents like the one in Hathijan,' the Commissioner said, adding that the municipality will take a zero-tolerance approach toward non-compliance. The AMC is expected to roll out detailed guidelines and enforcement mechanisms in the coming weeks. Gujarat has witnessed a significant rise in pet ownership, particularly in urban centres like Ahmedabad. Recent initiatives by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) have led to the registration of over 2,900 pet dogs, with popular breeds including Labradors and German Shepherds. This surge in registrations follows a Supreme Court directive aimed at better managing the pet population and addressing concerns related to stray dogs. Despite these efforts, estimates suggest that Ahmedabad alone is home to approximately 1.5 lakh pet dogs, indicating that a significant number remain unregistered.

Joju George confirms ‘Pani 2' is in the works, reveals plans to make it a trilogy
Malayalam star Joju George has confirmed that Pani 2, a sequel to his 2024 directorial debut Pani, is in the works. The actor revealed that the film will tell an entirely new story featuring a new cast and backdrop. The actor took to his Instagram account to announce the news. The film, currently in pre-production, will go on floors in December this year. Other details regarding the cast and crew are yet to be announced. Meanwhile, to much surprise, Joju has revealed that Pani was envisioned as a trilogy and that Pani 2 will be on a grander, larger scale than the first part. 'The third instalment, Pani 3, is expected to be the most intense of the three, and will also introduce a new set of lead performers,' read a statement from the makers. The revenge drama Pani, released in 2024, met with resounding success at the box office. It starred Joju alongside Abhinaya, Sagar Surya, Junaiz VP, Seema, Sujith Shankar, Prashanth Alexander, Ranjith Velayudhan, Bobby Kurian, Rinosh George, Jayashanker and Abhaya Hiranmayi along with 60 newcomers and thousands of junior artists. With music scored by Vishnu Vijay and Sam CS, the film had cinematography by Venu ISC and Jinto George, and editing by Manu Antony. Pani was produced by M Riyaz Adam and Sijo Vadakkan under Appu Pathu Pappu Productions, AD Studios, and Sree Gokulam Movies.

Joju George announces Pani 2, confirms plans for third instalment
Actor-director Joju George has confirmed that the script for Pani 2, the follow-up to his 2024 directorial debut Pani, is complete. Principal photography of the second instalment is scheduled to commence in December this year. Joju also revealed plans for a third instalment, confirming that the Pani franchise will continue as a trilogy. Unlike the original, Pani 2 will feature an entirely new cast, setting and storyline. Joju emphasised that the second instalment will not be a direct continuation but a spiritual successor, focusing on fresh characters and narratives. He noted that the upcoming parts will also primarily showcase emerging talent like the first instalment. Released in October 2024, Pani reportedly became the biggest commercial success of Joju's acting career. Set in Thrissur, the action-packed thriller follows Giri (Joju), a former gangster trying to live quietly, who is pulled back into the criminal world when two youngsters disrupts his family life. The film was noted for its strong performances, particularly by newcomers Sagar Surya and Junaiz V P, who played the antagonist-duo opposite Joju. Further details regarding the cast and release dates for Pani 2 and the third instalment are expected to be announced in due course.
