6.5-magnitude earthquake recorded in Colombia

June 8 (UPI) -- A 6.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Colombia on Sunday about 56 miles east of Bogota, according to the Servicio Geológico Colombiano. The SGC's database for tracking such incidents recorded the earthquake around 8:08 a.m. local time near the city of Paratebueno and described it as having a shallow depth. The agency said that it had received some 5,000 reports of people who felt the earthquake. Data shows that at least two aftershocks have had magnitudes greater than 4. Carlos Carrillo, the director of Colombia's national disaster risk agency, said during a news conference Sunday that damage was recorded to a national highway in the area. "In the inspection area of Santa Cecilia and the village of La Europa, as well as in Medina, the main church has been affected, including collapsed walls," he said. "So far, two people have been reported injured in that municipality. Damage has occurred to walls and facades of churches and homes, and there may also be damage to bridges." He later clarified that four people total have so far been reported injured, two in Paratebueno and two in Medina. They are all said to have minor injuries. Carrillo said authorities were seeking to verify the impacts of the earthquake on a health center in the town of Fómeque and on a Catholic church in the town of Une in the Andes. Damage to homes were also reported in the towns of Tocaima and Caldas. The U.S. Geological Survey also recorded the earthquake, describing it as a 6.3-magnitude tremor.

Powerful 6.3 magnitude quake shakes Bogota

Scores of people gathered in parks and outside buildings in their pyjamas. (AFP pic) BOGOTA : A powerful, shallow 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the Colombian capital of Bogota early today, according to AFP reporters on the ground and the US Geological Survey (USGS). The shallow quake struck near the city of Paratebueno in central Colombia, some 170km east of Bogota, the USGS said. No casualties were immediately reported in the tremor, also felt in cities including Medellin, Cali and Manizales. In Bogota, buildings shook, sirens blared and people rushed out into the streets, while social media users posted videos of swinging lights and furniture, though the images could not be immediately verified by AFP. Scores of people gathered in parks and outside buildings in their pyjamas, with parents trying to calm frightened children and others looking for pets that had run away. Many were afraid to go back inside. 'It was a big scare,' said 54-year-old Carlos Alberto Ruiz, who left his apartment with his wife, son and dog. 'It's been a while since we felt it this strong here in Bogota,' said Francisco Gonzalez, a lawyer who also fled his home. 'This was very strong,' said one elderly lady trying to make her way down several flights of steps. Bogota's security department said on X that emergency workers were conducting a sweep of the city to look for damage and provide assistance. Bogota's mayor Carlos Fernando Galan said all disaster agencies had been activated. Central Colombia is in a zone of high seismic activity. A 6.2 magnitude quake there in 1999, not far from Ansermanuevo, claimed nearly 1,200 lives. The country is on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin to South America.

Magnitude 6.3 earthquake shakes Colombia's capital Bogota

A powerful magnitude 6.3 earthquake has shaken the Colombian capital of Bogota, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS reported on Sunday morning that the quake struck near the city of Paratebueno in central Colombia, about 170 kilometres (105 miles) east of Bogota. Reporters of the AFP news agency on the ground said buildings shook and sirens sounded around Bogota as people rushed out onto the streets for safety. People gathered in parks and outside buildings in their pyjamas as parents tried to calm frightened children while others searched for pets that had run away during the tremor. One elderly woman told AFP that the shake was 'very strong' as she made her way down several flights of steps. The Mayor of Bogota, Carlos Galan, wrote on X that no one was injured in the earthquake, according to preliminary reports. 'At this time, one person is being treated for an anxiety attack and is being transferred to the Central Hospital. So far, minor structural damage and some power outages have been reported, but service has already been restored,' Galan added. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), however, said it was a magnitude 6.5 earthquake, with the epicentre at a depth of 10km (6.21 miles). Central Colombia, a zone of high seismic activity, has experienced a similar earthquake before, which was recorded as a 6.2 magnitude quake in 1999, claiming nearly 1,200 lives.
