Ames teen with gun arrested in Des Moines carjacking

DES MOINES, Iowa — A 17-year-old from Ames has been arrested in connection with a carjacking that happened in Des Moines Sunday afternoon, and police say the vehicle that was stolen has now been located. Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department, said the incident began when an individual trying to sell their 2017 Dodge Charger met with an interested buyer. During the test drive, Sgt. Parizek said the suspect pulled a gun on the owner and took off in the car. Des Moines shooting leaves one seriously injured Officers responded to the report of the theft at 8th Street and Euclid Avenue just before 2:00 p.m. Investigators quickly linked an accomplice vehicle to the case, which had been spotted in West Des Moines shortly after 1:00 p.m., switching license plates. Sgt. Parizek said additional investigation caused DMPD to seek help from the Ames Police Department, which found the suspected accomplice vehicle at an Ames residence. Detectives with DMPD went to Ames and located the 17-year-old carjacking suspect. He was taken into custody. The suspect's name has not been released. The suspect is charged with: Robbery – 1st Degree (Class B felony) Conspiracy To Commit A Forcible Felony (Class C felony) Assault While Committing A Felony (Class D felony) Trafficking In Stolen Weapons (Class D felony) Persons Ineligible To Possess Dangerous Weapons (Serious Misdemeanor) Sgt. Parizek said a 9mm handgun was recovered by detectives, which had been reported stolen from Illinois earlier this year. Police initially asked for help to locate the Dodge Charger because it wasn't at the residence where the teen was arrested. Later Monday morning, Sgt. Parizek said the car was located in an apartment complex parking lot in Ames, hidden under a tarp. Police continue to investigate and follow leads on accomplices to the crime.
