A weekend in the water with Parks & Rec
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A pair of weekend events from Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation will have competitors hitting the water. Lexann Littau is visiting from Wyoming and spending the morning water walking at Midco Aquatic Center. Pride fests and protests make for busy Sioux Falls weekend 'At my age, it's good for the joints, it's a lot easier, the impact's a lot easier on your joints,' Wyoming resident Lexann Littau said. What about walking laps against the current of the lazy river? 'Obviously, more challenging, but again, at my age, it's just a good thing to keep moving because if you don't move, you lose it,' Littau said. Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation is hosting the first Lazy 5K of summer this Saturday at Drake Springs Aquatic Center, and it's not as easy as the name suggests. 'It's a lot harder than what you'd think, it's more of a workout than a lot of people would realize,' recreation coordinator Adam Livermore said. Adam Livermore is a recreation coordinator with Parks & Rec and says it's a 5K — 44 laps — but you don't have to do it alone. 'You can do a two- or four-person relay, so break it up, get some friends together and do it that way too,' Livermore said. You're also encouraged to set sail with the Great Cardboard Boat Race on Sunday at Kuehn Park Pool. 'Sign up, build a boat, cardboard and duct tape only,' Livermore said. 'So (no) wood, fiberglass, anything like that, we try to keep an even playing field, so whatever corrugated cardboard you want to use and then duct tape,' Livermore added. If your vessel isn't seaworthy, there is an award for the quickest to sink. 'Every now and again, we have one that doesn't make it very far or it capsizes right away,' Livermore said. One of the many reasons is that there will be lifeguards on hand. Registration is required for both events. The Lazy 5K is Saturday night from 7:00 to 9:00 at Drake Springs Aquatic Center. The cost is $20. The Great Cardboard Boat Race is Sunday morning at Kuehn Park Pool. Check-in begins at 9:00, followed by the race at 10:00. This event is free. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Strong start at new west Sioux Falls rec center
SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Attendance at the new Westside Recreation Center has already far exceeded expectations. The former Sanford Wellness Center is now owned by the City of Sioux Falls and the facility has been averaging 700 people a day in the five months it's been open. Sioux Falls Rec. Trail expansion underway The center has become a favorite destination for families who otherwise can't afford a gym membership. Sherri Austin works out at the Westside Recreation Center three times a week. 'I love that I can do most everything I want to do as far as weights, the track, all that. My husband does the pool a lot,' Austin said. Austin also appreciates the convenience of the center's location, off Ellis Road. But it's not just west-siders who are showing up. 'More people with lower income, along with greater diversity. We're seeing all walks of life use this facility, all ages,' Sioux Falls Parks & Rec Recreation Manager Jackie Nelson said. The City expected around 2,500 people to use the facility over the course of an entire year. But they've already blown past that number as they close in on 4,000 members. Pricing has a lot to do with it. 'Typically, other fitness clubs would be about $15 for a daily pass. Here at the West Side Recreation Center, our daily passes are about half of that,' Nelson said. The name itself can factor in turnout. Parks & Rec says people are more likely to show up to a recreation center as opposed to, say a fitness center or a wellness center. 'Recreation is very magical, yes. A lot of things go into recreation. It's more than just sports,' Nelson said. Upgrades at the center include a new surface on the basketball court that will include more spaces for pickleball. That project should be finished by the end of the month. This is the first city-run recreation center, with the goal of offering activities that won't be a heavy financial lift for families on a tight budget. 'It's a great environment. It's a great culture. We love to have lots of fun. And I think we're seeing it and feeling it as we continue to move through these months,' Nelson said. Other upcoming projects at the recreation center include replacing both the parking lot and the roof later this year. The center is open for Mother's Day. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Parks & Recreation Fave Reveals 1 Reason They Avoid Rewatching The Hit Show
While many of us might tune into shows like Parks & Recreation for a pick-me-up when we're feeling blue, it turns out it has the adverse effect on one of its cast members. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, former Parks & Rec star Adam Scott admitted he avoids watching the show, if possible, as revisiting it makes him too sad. 'It makes me sad to see the show, because I miss them and I miss all the actors,' the Severance star shared, pointing out that 'even though we're constantly in touch and stuff', he still massively misses his time making the award-winning sitcom. He recalled: 'It was a really joyful five years — for me, seven years for the show — getting to go work there every day with that group of people. 'We had so much fun and we're making something that meant something to people; it meant something to us. I miss everyone.' Adam began playing Ben Wyatt in the season two finale of Parks & Recreation, becoming a full-time cast member when its third run began. While Ben and Amy Poehler's character Leslie Knope initially got off to a tough start, they quickly became entangled in a romance, with their love story forming a major part of what made the show so great in its final years. The Emmy nominee also revealed that he and the rest of the cast are still in a group chat, which gets updated about once a week. Describing his former colleagues, including Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Rob Lowe and Nick Offerman, as 'the best', he insisted: 'No one took it for granted. We all had a blast. 'I know people say that about their shows. It's annoying, but it really was so fun, and everyone got that it was special, and no one was sick of going to work.' Adam's latest TV venture is at the complete other end of the spectrum to Parks & Rec, once again taking the lead in the second season of Apple's surreal and dystopian workplace drama Severance.
