Jill Sobule's booking agent speaks out about her legacy, and time in Twin Cities
The Brief FOX 9 learned more details about singer-songwriter Jill Sobule who was found dead in a house fire in Woodbury. Her booking agent says she was in town staying with a friend rehearsing for a show next month. There will be a tribute to her at the Parkway Theater on June 11. WOODBURY, Minn. (FOX 9) - Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule was found dead in a house fire in Woodbury. Officials say it happened Thursday morning. What we know Sobule's booking agent says she is in town for rehearsal. She was scheduled to do a show at the Parkway Theater next month. She was staying at a Woodbury home with a friend. Investigators say that when firefighters arrived, the homeowners reported one person was still inside. That's when they found Sobule. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The backstory Sobule is known for 90's songs like "Supermodel," the track from teen Rom-com "Clueless." She was also known for breaking barriers for LGBTQ+ musicians. What they're saying She was in town for a podcast interview Thursday morning in the Twin Cities, and then she was scheduled to perform songs from her one-woman musical Friday in her hometown Denver, Colorado. "I picked her up where she was staying. I took her not far from here, Uptown, Minneapolis, to hang out for a few hours. And she had invited me when I once had dropped her off. She invited me to come to a podcast recording for Brian Oake that was supposed to take place on Thursday morning, [but] she never made that," said Craig Grossman, Jill Sobule's booking agent. Big picture view Sobule was also known for her hit 1995 song "I Kissed a Girl." It was the first openly gay-themed song to crack the Billboard Top 20. "She identified as a bisexual herself, and she wasn't the kind of person that was outspoken. She was, she showed a lot more than she told," said Grossman. What's next Her booking agent added that one of the last things she asked was, "how cold does it get here?" Because she was thinking about moving to the Twin Cities. There will be a tribute to Sobule on June 11 at the Parkway Theater.

Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule identified as victim killed in Woodbury house fire
Jill Sobule, the singer-songwriter whose 1995 single "I Kissed a Girl" was a national chart hit, has been identified as the woman killed in a house fire in Woodbury on Thursday morning. An official statement on the 66-year-old's social media pages confirmed the Denver native's death, which followed a house fire on the 9000 block of Pinehurst Road in Woodbury. Authorities arrived at the scene to be met by the homeowners, who told firefighters there was someone still inside the home. Crews went inside and found Sobule already dead. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Sobule rose to prominence in the 1990s, with "I Kissed a Girl," not to be confused with Katy Perry's later breakthrough hit of the same name, becoming the first ever openly gay-themed song to break into the Billboard Top 20. Sobule later came out as bisexual. The song featured on Sobule's self-titled album that also included "Supermodel," which featured on the soundtrack to hit 1995 movie "Clueless." She went on to release a dozen albums over her decades-long career. Still touring and performing, Sobule was scheduled to perform in Denver on Friday, and a performance of her new musical, "F*ck 7th Grade," was booked for the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis on June 11. An announcement on her death describes her political and civil rights activism: "In a dozen albums spanning three decades of recording, the Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer tackled such topics as the death penalty, anorexia nervosa, shoplifting, reproduction, the French Resistance, adolescent malaise, intolerance, and the MAGA movement with her signature wit and soul-bearing authenticity. Jill is considered a pioneer in crowdfunding, constantly explored new models to empower artists in an ever-changing music industry, and was the darling of the 'digirati' – Jill has performed at the TED conference more than any other artist." 'Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client & a friend today. I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others," said John Porter, her manager.

Parkway celebrates anime and MacGuffins throughout April
The Parkway Theater will spend April celebrating MacGuffins and anime. The south Minneapolis theater and concert venue has announced two series that will take place throughout the month, with one focused on classic films from director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. The second will bring in films with famous MacGuffins. (A MacGuffin is an object that is central to a film's story, but is ultimately meaningless. One of the most famous MacGuffins is the falcon statue in The Maltese Falcon. It doesn't really mean anything in itself, but it's the entire reason the story plows forward.) The Studio Ghibli series starts with Spirited Away (2001) on April 5. It'll be followed by screenings of Howl's Moving Castle (2004) on April 12, My Neighbor Totoro (1988) on April 19, and the less-loved but still charming Ponyo (2008) on April 26. All the Ghibli films will play on Saturdays at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, "MacGuffins! at The Parkway!" kicks off on April 3 with a 35mm screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and its Ark of the Covenant. On April 10, it'll pay a visit to the "great whatsit"-inspired glowing trunk of Repo Man (1984). Those are followed by Pulp Fiction (1994) and its illuminated briefcase on April 15 and The Evil Dead (1981) on April 21, a day when Ash definitely won't mess with the Necronomicon. Like every series at the Parkway, there are all-movie passes available, which save you a few bucks and come with a bag of popcorn during each movie.
