PACE to vote on holding Russia accountable for aggression against Ukraine
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will vote on a resolution concerning the need to hold Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine. Source: Yevheniia Kravchuk, a member of the Ukrainian delegation to PACE and MP from the Servant of the People faction, on Facebook Details: The vote on the resolution will take place on 9 April. Quote from Kravchuk: "The spring session of PACE has officially started! The agenda for the week has been approved. An important resolution will be adopted on Wednesday following urgent procedure debates – 'Russian war of aggression against Ukraine: the need for accountability, avoiding impunity'." Details: Kravchuk stated that the resolution will cover issues related to the establishment of a special tribunal for the crime of aggression, the creation of an international compensation mechanism, and accountability for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. "The aggressor must know that it will be held accountable for its crimes – politically, legally and financially. Otherwise, it is only a matter of time before such crimes are repeated," Kravchuk emphasised. Background: The group of states (Core Group) working on the establishment of a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine finalised the technical and legal documents required to launch it under the Council of Europe. In late March, The Hague hosted the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on an international treaty to establish the Claims Commission for Ukraine. Németh: Chances of peace have grown with inauguration of new US administration
Zsolt Németh welcomed the "flexible stance" of the Ukrainian leadership and expressed hope that President Vladimir Putin would take the same approach. Zsolt Németh, Head of the Hungarian parliament's foreign affairs committee, said the chances of lasting peace in the world have grown with the inauguration of the new US administration. Speaking at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Tuesday, Németh told the assembly that a ceasefire and peace talks in Ukraine were 'within reach' thanks to the Trump administration. Németh welcomed the 'flexible stance' of the Ukrainian leadership and expressed hope that President Vladimir Putin would take the same approach. Németh told MTI by phone that Tuesday's debate on the 'new world order and a report on the need to renew the rules-based international order' offered a chance to review changes brought about by the Trump administration. 'The new interpretation of domestic security and migration in the US is especially important for the Council of Europe, a humanitarian organisation. This could have a serious effect on migration, which is an important factor for the CoE,' Németh said. The Trump administration's conservative values in gender and family policy, and its 'classic, conservative interpretation of human rights', had serious backing in Europe, he said. National sovereignty and the representation of national interests were expected to grow in value in such an environment, he said.
