Education Ministry launches ProKhas to aid children in remote village
KALABAKAN: The Education Ministry has launched a special initiative, ProKhas, in Kampung Serudung Laut here, to provide children in this remote village with access to education. Its minister Fadhlina Sidek said the programme is part of efforts to ensure no child is left behind, especially in rural areas like Kampung Serudung Laut, which is about two hours by boat from Tawau. "The ministry identified a group of children here who lack formal education. After discussions with parents and the local community, we assured them the issue would be addressed. "Through ProKhas, classrooms and teaching staff will be provided, along with essential schooling support," she said. Fadhlina said this during a two-day working visit under the Parliamentary Follow-up Programme, accompanied by Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan, Sabah Education director Datuk Raisin Saidin, and Kalabakan member of parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy. During the visit, Fadhlina inspected an informal classroom set up by the Social Welfare Department, which currently serves five children with one teacher. She added that ProKhas aims to assess and support children's learning needs, particularly those who have had limited or no access to education. "I'm truly heartened to see an opportunity to improve access to education here. The ministry guarantees that no child will be excluded," she said. The District Education Office and the Sabah Education Department will oversee the implementation of ProKhas, with the ministry monitoring progress to ensure the children receive proper education. Meanwhile, Kampung Serudung village chief Ronny Akai shared that the informal class has been operating for about a month in the village church under the Social Welfare Department's early childhood development programme. He said the church, built in 1988, once hosted a mission school run by the Tawau Baptist Church from 1989 until 2000, before it closed due to a shortage of volunteer teachers. It later reopened from 2005 to 2021, with enrolment peaking at 40 students. "However, by 2020, the number of pupils declined as families moved to Tawau in search of better educational opportunities for their children. For those who remained, learning continued informally through villagers who could read and write. "Some children eventually sat for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam as private candidates," he said. Ronny expressed hope that the children in the village would be able to receive better education locally, saying that only education could ensure a brighter future. He also thanked the Minister, the ministry, and the government for their efforts.

KALABAKAN: The Ministry of Education (MOE) acknowledged the ongoing issue of limited or non-existent internet access in school areas, particularly following the launch of the digital education policy. Its Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the challenges faced by schools, especially in rural areas, cannot be overlooked and remain a key priority for the MOE. To address this, she said, the Ministry has introduced the Parliamentary Follow-up Programme, which involves visits to affected locations to assess the situation firsthand. 'We at MOE are fully committed, and with the support of the Ministry of Communications, we are consistently working to improve internet access and connectivity in schools. 'There are many initiatives and support programmes from the Ministry of Communications to complete the digital ecosystem,' she told reporters in conjunction with her two-day working visit under the Parliamentary Follow-up Programme, which ended Friday. Fadhlina, accompanied by Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, visited two schools in the Kalabakan parliamentary constituency, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Kalabakan and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kalabakan, as well as a project site for the construction of an additional building for Sekolah Kebangsaan Umas. Meanwhile, Fadhlina said the Ministry would ensure that every school gets smart boards and tablets to facilitate the teaching and learning process in schools. 'This is to encourage and enhance the children's learning experience in the classroom, making it more interactive, while ensuring our children are not left behind. 'Sabah is among the states where digital adoption at the teacher level is very encouraging. We want teachers with these skills to ensure their students also gain access to digital facilities and skills. I think we have a teacher activity centre that can be fully utilised to conduct digital programmes and activities,' she said. Meanwhile, Fadhlina reminded teachers to emphasise ethical practices in the use of technology and digital tools, ensuring that students use them wisely and are able to differentiate between educational content and materials that could negatively influence their morals. Meanwhile, Andi Muhammad Suryady thanked the Ministry of Communications for ensuring that the people get quality internet access, especially in school areas. He said broadband services through the National Digital Network (Jendela) initiative play a key role in attracting telecommunications network providers to expand coverage, especially in rural areas. Infrastructure development and upgrading of basic telecommunications networks are important to accommodate the needs of the digital lifestyle in this era, he added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
