Pune: Mangalmukhi Kinnar Charitable Trust to hold unity march for transgender community tomorrow
The Mangalmukhi Kinnar Charitable Trust, which traditionally works with the hijra community, would take out its first-ever transgender rally in Pune on Sunday to highlight the need for staying united and raising a voice against social evil. Issues like the dowry death of Vaishnavi Hagawane, discrimination against the transgender community, etc, the trust said, would be highlighted during the march. The rally, termed the Ekta Rally or Rally for Unity, stands out as this would be the first time the trust is coming on the road. It will start from Ganesh Peth in Pune at 3 pm and end near Shaniwarwada. The Mangalmukhi Kinnar Charitable Trust said in a statement that the main reason for the rally was to highlight the need for unity in times of distress. 'The hijra community has no divisions on the basis of caste or religion. Ours is a support system-based society. But the present divisive atmosphere in the larger society has affected us too. Our march is to lay stress on the unity of the nation, and we would also call upon others to do so,' the Trust said. On the need for conducting the rally, the Trust's spokesperson said the community felt it was fit to come on the roads in June, being Pride Month, to call for unity and raise awareness about various issues affecting the community at large. The Mangalmukhi Kinnar Charitable Trust is managed and run by the hijra community. It runs various organisations and undertakes welfare activities for the community at large. The affairs of the hijra community are conducted as per traditions and have a 'Guru Chela format', where the inmates are raised and guided through various art forms under the tutelage of a teacher. Why are Maharashtra onion farmers asking for Rs 1 lakh per acre compensation?
Onion farmers in Nashik have recently written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding compensation of Rs 1 lakh per acre for damages suffered owing to unseasonal rainfall in May. Bharat Dighole, President, Maharashtra Onion Growers Association, said many farmers have completely lost their crop in the untimely rain. This year, Maharashtra registered 1007 per cent of normal rainfall in May. As against the 14.4 mm of normal rainfall, Maharashtra had received 159.4 mm of rainfall last month. In the onion belt of Nashik-Pune-Ahilyanagar, the rainfall has been exceptionally heavy. Nashik had received 747 per cent of its normal rainfall, whereas Pune and Ahilyangar received 948 per cent of their normal rainfall. Rainfall in May, although not unusual, happened at a time when onion harvesting got delayed, leading to greater losses. Farmers had trouble arranging for labour due to the high temperatures in April, otherwise, the crop could have been harvested after March. At present, wholesale onion prices at the Lasalgaon market in the Nashik district are ranging between Rs 1,100-1,200/quintal. These prices, farmers said, do not even meet the cost of production, which is almost Rs 2,000/quintal. 'Farmers who sold their onions at throwaway prices must be compensated,' Dighole said. In order to help farmers get better prices, the Centre has asked the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) as well as the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) to commence procurement of onions. 'The base price for this procurement must be Rs 2,000/quintal so that the wholesale market prices rise,' Dighole argued. Monsoon arrives in Pune a fortnight ahead; heavy rainfall leads to flooding in areas including Baramati, Indapur
Monsoon arrived in Pune Monday, almost 14 days before its normal date of onset — one of the earliest the city has seen — as the heavy rain affected traffic on the Pune-Mumbai highway, besides several other parts of the city. Following this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that conditions are now conducive for the advancement of the monsoon in the rest of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, incessant rainfall led to flooding in several areas in Pune over the weekend, including Baramati, Indapur, and Daund. Monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 24, Saturday, the earliest onset seen in the state since 2009. A day later, Maharashtra witnessed advanced onset of the Southwest Monsoon, ten days before the usual date of June 5. This is also the earliest onset of monsoon that Mumbai has seen in 35 years. This time, the monsoon current has been exceptionally strong, covering several areas well in advance. While Lonavala recorded 236 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, another Automatic Weather Station (AWS) in Kurvande reported 184.5 mm. Daund saw 114 mm of rainfall and Shivajinagar reported 23 mm, while Baramati recorded 53 mm during the period. In the last three days, Baramati received a total of 194.8 mm of rainfall, followed by Bhigwan in Indapur taluka which received 136.4 mm. The village of Sansar in Indapur has seen 194 mm of rainfall in the last three days. Twenty-one revenue mandals in the district reported more than 65 mm of rainfall, while 14 villages in Baramati and Indapur went under water due to a breach in the Khadakwasla Left Canal. The Pune-Solapur highway was closed to traffic for an hour following inundation on Sunday. Meanwhile, the IMD issued a 'red' alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts on Monday afternoon. The alert will remain in place until Tuesday morning. As per the weather department, Mumbai and neighbouring districts will experience 'extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds at isolated places.' Several parts of South Mumbai (Island City division) received over 200 mm of rainfall on Monday, including Nariman Point station (252 mm), Byculla E ward office (213 mm), and Colaba (207 mm). Traffic congestion and waterlogging were also reported at multiple locations in the city. When will Pune see onset of monsoon? Here's what a weather expert has to say
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Saturday declared the onset of the southwest monsoon in Kerala, 8 days earlier than normal. Maharashtra and Pune are now next in line in terms of onset. Incessant rains have been battering parts of Pune over the last few days, leading many to wonder whether monsoon has already arrived in the city. According to Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD, the most likely date for the onset of monsoon in Pune is May 28. The IMD declares onset after a series of conditions are met. Pune and Maharashtra have been witnessing rain over the last few days, which is mainly attributed to the low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea. The low-pressure areas have caused extensive rainfall in Pune and Maharashtra. The state has received 99.2 mm of rainfall, more than four times the 20.1 mm of rainfall it is supposed to receive between March 1 and May 31. If the trend persists, this will be one of the wettest summers the state and city might have seen in a long time. The recent rains have sparked both anxiety and enthusiasm among farmers. Ganesh Nanote, a farmer from Akola district, noted that the rain has disrupted the pre-sowing land preparation for crops such as moong and urad beans. 'Our main concern is the second week of June. If the current rainfall trend continues, we will have no complaints. However, if that week turns dry, we could face significant problems,' he said. The IMD Saturday said the onset of monsoons in Kerala was the earliest since 2009, when monsoons arrived on May 23. It also said that over the next two to three days, favourable conditions will aid the further advance of monsoon into parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, more parts of Karnataka, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, Goa, and more parts of the central Arabian Sea.
