New England Patriots picked for NFL's ‘unique' new alternate uniform experiment
The New England Patriots will be getting a new alternate jerseys this season as part of the NFL's new program. Nike announced Tuesday that the NFL is kicking off 'Rivalries,' a program in which teams will wear special uniforms for select home games against rivals. Advertisement An important note for Patriots fans: The new 'Rivalries' jerseys will be added in addition to existing alternate uniforms. That means the red throwback 'Pat Patriot' jerseys will not be affected by the new look. The uniforms and jerseys themselves have yet to be revealed. Nike says that it will be announced after the NFL's big schedule unveiling next month. The concept sounds similar to the City Connect jerseys that have gained traction in the NBA and MLB. Nike described the new gear as a 'unique' uniform 'rooted extensively in local community insights.' Advertisement According to Nike, the Rivalries uniforms will join a team's jersey rotation for three years after their initial release. The only teams selected to participate in the program out of the gate are those in the AFC East and NFC West. Additional teams will be added to the program each of the following years. NFL announcement should excite fans of Patriots' throwback uniforms The NFL announced that teams can now wear throwback uniforms four times during the regular season. That means there could be more of the fan-favorite New England Patriots red jerseys in the 2025 season. The "Pat Patriot" uniforms that were created and made popular in 1960 have stood the test of time. Some would even argue they are the Patriots' best-looking uniforms. The team has turned to the look over the years in throwback uniform games. It always brings back a sense of nostalgia for longtime Patriots fans, while newcomers typically enjoy the red threads as a fashion shake-up for the team. More Pat Patriot can only be a good thing. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye teased the possibility of the team wearing throwback blues back in February. So there could be multiple alternates in play for the Patriots at some point. Maye is likely referring to the royal blue uniforms that the team wore for much of the 1990s. In 1993, the team did its first uniform redesign in the history of the franchise, ditching the 'Pat Patriot' uniforms for the royal blues. Those uniforms became synonymous with Drew Bledsoe's time as the Patriots' quarterback. The franchise went from the bottom of the league to playing for the Super Bowl just a few years after making the uniform swap with Bledsoe emerging as one of the league's top quarterbacks. Instead, the Patriots began to wear navy blue uniforms as their primary home jersey in 2000. That allowed the Patriots to bring back the 'Pat Patriot' uniforms that year and it appears they might bring back the first helmets the team ever wore. Of course, they didn't wear those helmets with the royal blue jerseys in the 1990s. But the Patriots could mix and match them with their royal blue looks starting in 2025 in some capacity. Regardless, it seems like the royal blue uniforms are returning in 2025, at least if Maye is to be believed. It's just a question of whether they'll be their primary uniforms or one of their two alternate looks.
