Matheesha Pathirana has to drill down on what he needs to do: Stephen Fleming

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that while Matheesha Pathirana has shown some improvement, he hasn't quite met expectations in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL).Following an impressive 2024 season - where he claimed 13 wickets in just six matches - the 22-year-old has struggled to find form in the current far in IPL 2025, Pathirana has taken 12 wickets in 11 games, but his economy rate of 10.17 is the highest amongst all CSK bowlers who have played more than 10 matches. Fleming was candid in his assessment, stating that Pathirana hasn't performed at the level the team had hoped 'Yeah, he hasn't been up to what we want. We have high expectations of him, which is why we retained him, but he is coming back into some form. He was really out of form when we had him in South Africa. He's made improvements, but it's still not to where we or he would like, so there's some room for him to get some form and get some confidence, I guess,' Fleming said in the post-match press Tuesday, Matheesha Pathirana endured another tough outing, returning figures of 2.1 overs, 22 runs, and no wickets, as the Super Kings suffered yet another defeat - this time by six wickets to the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Head coach Stephen Fleming emphasised that Pathirana needs to elevate his performance, noting that opposing batters have started to find ways to counter his I think he's just at that crossroads where batsmen are playing him better. They've seen more of him, so now he just has to drill down on what he needs to do to be as effective as what he's been for the first part of his career. It's a unique skill set, but it's been a little bit off,' Fleming Super Kings will play their last league game on May 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Watch IN THIS STORY#IPL 2025

Shreyas Iyer's batting tweaks: Ravi Shastri and Ricky Ponting rave

Shreyas Iyer's front leg has been a twinkling balletic limb of substance this IPL. The open stance, the rapid jerks of the bat-swing while still awaiting the ball-release, the angle of that bat and the timing of its pick-up, and the retreat of the back-leg deep into the stance have all been rightly focussed on by the television cameras. The front leg too is worth a look. It's lightfooted, ready to spring to action, and sort of hangs loose even as he moves about. In the recent past, when he started to tinker with his batting to sort out his short-ball woes, he occasionally would get the whole weight on the backfoot, and find himself in a tangle while trying to shift the balance forward. No longer. The elastic loose front foot now can press forward in a blink or press down to let the unimpeded bat flow through. It helped in the way he walloped Sam Curran and Pathirana in the game against Chennai Super Kings. When Curran slipped in a slower short ball around off stump, Shreyas quickly pressed down the front foot, waited, and tapped the ball nonchalantly up and over the short third. When Pathirana aimed for the yorkers, Shreyas had retreated well inside the crease, used the front foot to hold balance and in the weight-transfer to wrist couple of boundaries on the on side, and once, a peach of a late-steer down to the third man boundary. It's all been done by the man himself, says Ricky Ponting about Shreyas's batting tweaks. 'I've had nothing to do with that,' Ponting said at the end of the game against Chennai Super Kings. 'You guys will see how his stance has evolved. He's opened his stance up a little bit. He's getting his right eye around more to the release point of the ball. And with his shoulders being open, he's being able to create some more access to the ball when the ball is back in towards his body. So that's stuff that he's all worked out himself. 'We're still working on it pretty much every day. There're little things that he needs to do because it is such a drastic move that he's done. He's got to make sure that everything is in the right position and all his movements are syncing up really well. But, I mean, some of the innings he's played this tournament so far have been as good as anyone else's. I mean, there've been a lot of hundreds made, but Shreyas' first game when he made 97, that's as good an innings as I've seen in the tournament.' Former India coach Ravi Shastri too has been raving about Shreyas' batting changes. 'He was very side on, was back and back, very much leg side. The fact that he's prepared to go back and across now and with a very upright stance and the pick up,' Shastri said on the ICC Review. 'While he's moving back, the bat's being picked up as well when he's going back and across. That allows him to play both sides of the wicket. If they [fast bowlers] bang it in short, he can pull and hook. And if there's any room outside the off stump, he can cut as well. So that opens up the game for him rather than being too leg side where the rib cage was being targeted and then there was no escape.'

IPL 2025: Batters have adapted to Pathirana - CSK bowling coach Simons

Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simons has defended Matheesha Pathirana amid his underwhelming form this IPL season, saying that the opposition batters have started reading and adapting better to him. The five-time champions were eliminated from the IPL play off race on Wednesday when they lost to Punjab Kings, their eighth defeat in 10 outings. Pathirana, known for his slingy action, has lost the control he had in the previous season. Earlier, CSK head coach had said the reason for a dip in form was due to a change in action. "It's been quite well documented that there was a bit of an action change. But he's pretty much back to where he was and just in terms of the height of his arm on a reasonably consistent basis," Simons said in the post-match press conference. "I'm not sure that he's less accurate. Batters are playing him a lot better. We can certainly see a trend in the way that batters are playing against him, particularly against Mumbai the other day. "The technique that they're using, they understand what his plans and what he does, he added. Pathirana has taken nine wickets at an average of 33.11 and an economy of 10.39 in eight matches this season. He has also been guilty of bowling several wides. Simons feels the Sri Lankan pacer needs to evolve as batters have found a way to score against him. "So the evolution, might just be what's next for him tactically as to what he needs to do to keep evolving. Batters need to keep evolving, bowlers need to keep evolving. "Tonight, his channels are quite good. His lines are quite good. Obviously, he got his lengths, he'd prefer a fuller length, but the batsmen are treating him differently this year." Simons feels CSK need to be "tactically smarter" in crucial moments in order to win games. "I think as a team, throughout batting and bowling, there are little areas we want to try and find to be more accurate around what we want to do. But as a unit, the guys have pretty much played their job. "It's about winning those big overs. Every now and then you're sitting up there and going, if we have a really tight over here, the game changes. "Sometimes you get away in the last ball or the second-last ball and not understanding sometimes how to come out of an over. I think tactically smarter in key moments is probably some of the growth areas that we need to always work on.
