Vacation hideaway for rich and famous hit by ICE raids as 40 arrested in Nantucket ahead of summer season

Federal immigration raids have spread to New England's summer island getaway destinations, with 40 people detained on Tuesday by agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency and the FBI. ICE states in a press release that the raids occurred on the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. The Nantucket Current reports that the action by federal authorities appears to be the largest immigration enforcement operation on the island in years. Federal agents pulled over multiple vehicles across the mid-island area beginning around 7 a.m., with at least a dozen people taken into custody. It is also not known whether this was a random sweep or if the arrests targeted known criminal suspects. Detainees were then removed from the island aboard the Coast Guard patrol boat Hammerhead around 1:30 p.m. 'ICE officers and FBI, DEA and ATF agents worked together to arrest a significant number of illegal alien offenders which included at least one child predator,' said ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde. 'Our partners in the U.S. Coast Guard facilitated a safe and efficient transport of the alien offenders off Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, ensuring the safety of the residents of those communities. ICE and our federal partners made a strong stand for prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing illegal aliens from our New England neighborhoods.' Nantucket Police Lieutenant Angus MacVicar stated that they were notified on Monday by ICE regarding the timing of the operation. 'We were not asked to support their operation in any way [nor] have we assisted today,' he said. The Current reports that a woman was left behind in the passenger seat of a Toyota 4Runner after federal agents pulled it over and took two men into custody on Old South Road, which runs near the island's airport. In addition, on Fairgrounds Road, island resident Mason Kennelly was pulled over by ICE agents who questioned him before saying they 'had the wrong guy.' White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reportedly demanded that immigration agents significantly increase daily arrests to 3,000 in a 'tense' meeting last week. Miller, President Donald Trump's top adviser and architect of the administration's aggressive immigration policies, and Noem told agents they needed to up daily arrests and deportations during the meeting at Immigration and Customs Enforcement's headquarters in Washington, D.C. on May 21, according to Axios. The figure is approximately triple the number of daily arrests that ICE agents were making at the beginning of the Trump administration, the outlet noted. The administration deported 17,000 people in April, according to ICE, which is a 29 percent increase over April 2024, according to NBC News. The ICE sweep comes at the start of the peak tourism season. As a popular — and expensive — destination, Nantucket's population swells to 80,000 during summer months. Following his election defeat in November 2024, President Joe Biden and his family spent Thanksgiving on the island. Martha's Vineyard similarly sees its population swell from 20,000 to over 200,000 in the summer. Famous regular visitors include the Clintons, the Obamas, Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz, and numerous Hollywood and media figures.

MS-13 member, child sex offender nabbed amid federal immigration enforcement on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard

Immigration enforcement operations carried out Tuesday on the Massachusetts islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard resulted in about 40 arrests, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) noted in a press release provided to Fox News Digital. The effort marked a major win for public safety — a documented MS-13 member as well as "at least one child sex offender" were among those arrested, the release indicates. "ICE officers and FBI, DEA and ATF agents worked together to arrest a significant number of illegal alien offenders which included at least one child predator," ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde, noted, according to the release. ICE says it's 'not targeting nannies' at Boston playgrounds as rumors swirl across US

Rumors that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were detaining nannies at Boston playgrounds in the past week have been denied by the agency in a rare public statement — just days after similar fears spread in another major U.S. city. 'ICE Boston is NOT targeting nannies,' read a post on X from Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston at 6:03 p.m. on May 13. 'Rumors to the contrary are false and unnecessarily risk the safety of our officers and agents,' the post read. In her own statement within the post, Acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said the rumors 'amount to nothing more than scare tactics' and are 'absolutely ridiculous.' The denial from ICE comes just after debunked rumors circulated of ICE agents detaining nannies at playgrounds in Washington, D.C. Those rumors began when people at a playground the Forest Hills neighborhood of D.C. saw local police making an unrelated arrest nearby, according to reports from NBC Washington and The Washington Post. Two unmarked SUVs with dark-tinted windows had been seen idling in a nearby alley, The Post reported. This led to messages that read, 'ICE agents were taking nannies and leaving children in the park,' to quickly circulate on parents' group emails, WhatsApp chats and text chains. 'Not trying to create hysteria,' began one message that was sent from one parent to another, the Post reported. The message continued, 'They are in Forest Hills right now in full tactical gear and children are being left behind.' The hysteria in D.C. resulted in immigration lawyers, Forest Hill neighbors and an elected official to converge on the playground area, according to the outlets — and left parents 'alarmed across the city.' ICE spokesperson James Covington later responded to The Post with a statement almost identical to Hyde's, denying any rumors of nannies being detained. ICE has not publicly commented on any other Massachusetts rumors related to detainments in recent months. The Boston Police Department told MassLive that there were no arrests made or police activity at playgrounds in the Back Bay over the weekend or at the beginning of the week. The Boston Police Department is not involved in any ICE operations. The Boston-based rumors appeared to start circulating online since at least Monday. In the Boston sub-Reddit group, a user posted they heard ICE ''raided' Back Bay' and were 'scooping up nannies' at the playground located on Clarendon Street on Monday. 'Does anyone know if this is true? If so, what actually happened?' the user, merely identified by their screen name Standard-Bicycle-279, asked. Those in the comment sections agreed they'd heard the same rumors. Some even went as far to definitively state, 'Yes, this is true.' Other online posts, including those made in a South End community Facebook group at 9:02 p.m. on Monday, also reiterated the fears. MassLive reached out to City Councilor Sharon Durkan, who represents Back Bay, on Tuesday for commentary on residents' concerns. Durkan did not respond for comment. Since President Donald Trump took office, ICE has detained several people in public settings in Massachusetts. This includes Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University doctoral student taken by masked federal agents from the streets of Somerville in March. She was detained in Louisiana up until last week over an op-ed she co-authored in her student newspaper. It also includes Wilson Martell-Lebron, a man whisked into an unmarked black SUV by ICE agents in the middle of his trial over falsified RMV records at the Edward W. Brooke Courthouse. And just last week, ICE agents were at the core of a chaotic scene in Worcester when they detained a Rosane Ferreira-De Oliveira, who came from Brazil, and the woman's daughter tried to stop the car with a newborn baby in her arms. She was being held in Rhode Island as of Monday. A crowd of more than 30 people approached the agents as they took Ferreira-De Oliveira, shouting at them and demanding to see a warrant. The daughter was arrested by Worcester police and charged with reckless endangerment of a child, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after she kicked at and ran after the car. 'Sanctuary city' raid rounds up over 200 migrant criminals: ICE

The U.S. Customs and Enforcement agency (ICE) announced that a massive operation in Massachusetts resulted in nearly 400 arrests, including over 200 apprehensions of illegal immigrants who had serious criminal convictions or charges. "The Commonwealth is a safer place for our residents to live and work because ICE and our federal law enforcement partners arrested hundreds of alien offenders and removed them from the streets of Massachusetts," ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde said in a press release. The operation, which took place between March 18 and March 23, netted the arrests of 370 illegal immigrants in the Boston area. Among those, 205 of the migrants arrested had "significant criminal convictions or charges," the release noted, including six who were "currently facing charges or convictions for murder, drug trafficking, organized crime, and money laundering." Boston Mayor Faces Heat Over Sanctuary City Policies As Patriots Owner's Son Goes On Offensive The six-day operation targeted "egregious criminal alien offenders," the release notes, including members of MS-13 and Tren de Aragua who were operating "in and around Boston." The raids came despite Boston's status as one of several so-called "sanctuary" cities across the country, jurisdictions that restrict local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Read On The Fox News App Boston's Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu has doubled down on those policies in recent days, vowing to continue protecting illegal immigrants in the city during her State of the City address last week. "No one tells Boston how to take care of our own, not kings, and not presidents who think they are kings. Boston was born facing down bullies," she said. "You belong here," she told immigrants. Four 'Sanctuary City' Mayors Prep For Grilling In Congress This Week: 'Held Accountable' ICE agents were joined by personnel from several other federal agencies, including the FBI, DEA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, ATF, U.S. Marshals Service and DSS. "Safeguarding the integrity of the immigration and citizenship process is critical. We simply can't permit violent and dangerous criminals to enter or remain in the United States under false pretenses, with unknown allegiances and intentions. It's a direct threat to public safety and our national security," Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division Jodi Cohen said in the release. Those arrested in the operation included a Dominican migrant who illegally re-entered the U.S. after previously being charged with trafficking fentanyl, a Chilean migrant convicted on four counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, and a Honduran migrant convicted of rape of a child. Federal authorities also seized roughly 44 kilograms of methamphetamines, five kilograms of fentanyl and 1.2 kilograms of cocaine during the raid. "ICE and our federal law enforcement partners are committed to protecting the homeland through the eradication of transnational criminal organizations, dismantling dangerous criminal gangs preying on the American public, locating and arresting criminal alien offenders, and making our communities a safer place to live," Hyde said.
