Popular chicken chain brings back beloved menu item after 7 years
Fried chicken can be eaten in many different ways; some like it with fries, and others between a toasted bun. But many Georgians prefer to eat their chicken paired with a thick milkshake. This combination might sound a bit strange, but don't knock it until you've tried it. The chain is the embodiment of southern hospitality, which has allowed it to expand to over 940 locations across 17 states. Zaxby's introduced milkshakes to its menu in 2013 to provide more sweet treat options for its chicken-loving fans. This move also allowed it to better compete with rivals in a similar food sector. They are traditionally hand-spun, made-to-order, handcrafted shakes topped with sprinkles and finished with a Maraschino cherry. This initiative aimed to attract more tourism to Macon, Georgia, and to encourage the chicken chain to return milkshakes to its menu by testing them with a specific audience on a smaller scale. The customer response was so good that the chain expanded its availability to 500 restaurants at the beginning of this year. "Zaxby's delicious milkshakes have made their long-awaited return after years of requests from our most loyal fans," said Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Patrick Schwing in a press release. In honor of its 35th birthday, Zaxby's is returning its beloved milkshakes to its permanent menu after a seven-year hiatus to answer consumers' demand. Zaxbys brings back a fan favorite — and it's here to stay. What to know
A Zaxbys fan favorite is back for good, and just in time for the chain's 35th birthday. Handcrafted milkshakes will return to menus permanently at all Zaxbys locations by summer, the Georgia-based chicken chain said in a May 19 news release. To celebrate, all shakes are half off starting Monday, May 19, through June 1 at participating Zaxbys locations nationwide, the restaurant said. No additional purchase is necessary. The hand-spun treats are available in four flavors: ChocolateVanillaStrawberryBirthday Cake 'At Zaxbys, we believe every great celebration deserves something sweet — and what better way to mark our 35th birthday than by bringing back our fan-favorite milkshakes,' Patrick Schwing, chief marketing and strategy officer for Zaxbys, said in the release. The 20 oz. treats start at $4.99 and are slated to be in all restaurants permanently by June, Zaxbys said. Milkshakes were missing from menus for seven years before Zaxbys tested them exclusively in Macon and surrounding cities in 2024, McClatchy News reported. At the time, Zaxbys teamed up with Macon's tourism bureau, Visit Macon, to encourage travelers to explore the 'hidden gems, iconic landmarks, and storied history' of the city, about 80 miles southeast from Atlanta.
