Events across the Lowcountry pay tribute to heroes and families for Memorial Day
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)– Several events across the Lowcountry remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Monday morning, Dorchester County honored their heroes and their families in a remembrance ceremony, to commemorate those who gave their lives to service. Keynote speaker retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ticknor spoke of the history of Memorial Day and read the names of those from the Summerville area who died in conflicts from World War one to present day. 'Memorial Day is to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives for the defense of our country so we can enjoy the freedoms and liberty we have and particularly here in Summerville, I'd like to honor those in the Summerville area who gave that ultimate sacrifice,' said Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ticknor. At noon on Monday, the Charleston men's chorus performed a selection of patriotic anthems, uplifting spirituals, and choral arrangements to honor the sacrifice of the nation's heroes. 'It's something we work on all year long to prepare for the community and the community really loves it. said Jay Parker, the Vice President of the Charleston Men's Chorus. 'It's a very meaningful service as we remember what Memorial Day is all about which is those who made the ultimate sacrifice.' At Patriots' Point, the museum took a moment of remembrance before children musicians performed taps to honor fallen service members and their sacrifice. 'It's an opportunity for us to partner with people all over the country,' said Allison Hunter, the Executive Director at Patriots Point. 'Individuals, communities and groups all over the country are doing taps across America at 3 O'clock so it just a great way to connect the nation in remembering our fallen heroes.'
