NBA star Patty Mills and glamorous wife Alyssa expecting first child together - as they reveal gender of baby and hint at return to Australia

NBA star Patty Mills and his wife Alyssa are expecting their first child. The couple, who have been married for nearly six years, announced the exciting baby news in a shared Instagram post with Sports Illustrated Swimsuit on Saturday. 'Power couple @balapat and @missalyssa_michelle are gearing up to embark on their most exciting adventure together to date: parenthood,' the post read. The Australian basketball star, 36, who plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, and Alyssa, 34, an American swimwear designer, went on to reveal that they are having a little girl, who is due in August. The basketball star then posted a clip on his Instagram story of his wife showing off her growing baby bump as she danced to him playing songs behind the DJ booth. The pregnancy announcement comes as speculation runs rife that the Brisbane Bullets are eyeing up Patty's return to Australia for the 2025-2026 season. A homecoming could potentially be on the cards considering the Aussie sportsman's outlook on becoming a dad. The five-time Olympian, who is of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander descent, revealed in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he and his wife would like their little girl to have the same cultural upbringing that he had. 'Everything that I got taught as a young boy growing up in the Torres Strait, whether it was dancing or songs or making stuff in the kitchen, Alyssa has been taught by all the aunties, has been handed down to her,' he told the publication. 'An island way of life is very much a part of her life now. 'We're gonna raise our daughter [in] the same way,' he said, adding that it was the 'coolest' part of their journey to becoming a family. His mother Yvonne was a part of the Stolen Generations and Mills is a strong anti-racism advocate. With Patty's hopes of bringing up his daughter immersed in his culture, Aussie fans are taking the news as a hint that the basketball champ could be returning home very soon. With Patty's hopes of bringing up his daughter immersed in his culture, Aussie fans are taking the news as a hint that the basketball champ could be returning home very soon Alyssa is from North Carolina and played college basketball herself, having met Mills while they were both studying at St. Mary's College in California. However, with his wife being a California local these days, it could be anyone's guess where Patty will choose to raise his family, and subsequently, where he will continue his basketball career. It was revealed in 2021 that Patty has quietly been donating huge portions of his NBA salary to struggling indigenous communities across the country. The athlete, who has become a vocal activist for a number of causes, has been putting his money where his mouth is, donating the $1.5million he earned from participating in the NBA's pandemic bubble in 2020 to social justice bodies. Some of these include Black Lives Matter Australia, The We Got You campaign and Black Deaths in Custody. 'I'm playing in Orlando because I don't want to leave any money on the table that could be going directly to black communities,' Mills said last year.

New Orleans Pelicans to play Melbourne teams in a first for Australia

MELBOURNE, March 11 (Reuters) - The New Orleans Pelicans will play two Melbourne teams in pre-season games in Melbourne in October, bringing the National Basketball Association (NBA) to Australia for the first time. The Pelicans will play the National Basketball League's (NBL) Melbourne United on October 3 and South East Melbourne Phoenix two days later at Melbourne Park, the leagues announced on Tuesday. "Bringing the Pelicans and NBA to Australia for the first time is a proud milestone," Pelicans President Dennis Lauscha said in a statement. "This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a lasting connection between the Pelicans and the basketball community in Australia." Melbourne United, who have featured NBA players Patty Mills, Andrew Gaze and Matthew Dellavedova on their roster over the years, are currently 1-0 up in the NBL championship series against the Illawarra Hawks. South East Melbourne were an expansion team who entered the NBL in 2019 and lost to the Hawks in the playoff semi-finals this season. More and more Australians are watching the NBA with the country notching the highest viewing figures outside the United States on the league's digital platform in the 2023-24 season. A record 14 Australians, including Mills, Ben Simmons and Joe Ingles, are playing in the NBA this season. "The significance of this announcement for basketball in Australia and the NBL can't be overstated," said NBL Executive Director Larry Kestelman. "Hosting an NBA team in Australia has been a long-held dream for everyone at the NBL, and to see this initiative finally come to fruition after a 15-year journey shows that much can be accomplished when you 'Dream Big'." The Melbourne Cricket Ground will host the first National Football League (NFL) regular season game in Australia in 2026, the league announced last month. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks played a regular season baseball double-header in Sydney in 2014, while the National Hockey League (NHL)'s Arizona Coyotes and Los Angeles Kings played pre-season games in Melbourne in 2023.

Clippers look to reverse course against Jazz

February 8 - On a three-game losing streak to match a season high, the Los Angeles Clippers will seek to improve on controlling the pace when the Utah Jazz arrive for a matchup Saturday night at Inglewood, Calif. The teams will meet one week after completing a trade in which the Clippers acquired Drew Eubanks and Patty Mills, while the Jazz received Mo Bamba and P.J. Tucker. Bamba has since been waived, and Tucker subsequently was traded twice more. While the Clippers' three-game skid is troubling, the most recent two defeats are especially concerning after the team was overwhelmed by opponents in decisive stretches. The Clippers were blitzed from the jump in a 122-97 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, then couldn't avoid an avalanche in the second quarter and the closing minutes of a 119-112 setback to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. The Clippers are 2-4 in home games going back to Jan. 20 after they had won six consecutive games in their new arena, starting with a 144-107 victory over the Jazz on Dec. 16. Los Angeles is 2-0 against Utah this season, with both games in Inglewood. The Clippers had everything going their way Thursday with a 22-point lead against the Pacers early in the second quarter. But with one minute remaining before halftime, the Pacers had taken the lead. Los Angeles not only was outscored 42-19 in the second quarter, the team committed eight turnovers while the defense saw Indiana shoot 57.7 percent from the field in the decisive 12 minutes. "Second quarter, turnovers, you know, that kind of killed us," Clippers center Ivica Zubac said. "They were live-ball turnovers that would lead to the layups, and that kind of killed the whole momentum, man." James Harden and Norman Powell each scored 22 points, while Zubac had 18 points and 15 rebounds. Kawhi Leonard scored 19 points in a season-high 33 minutes. Leonard played in his 13th game after a late start to the season because of knee soreness. "I didn't mind tonight's game," Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said. "You're not gonna win every game, but there are some things that we can learn. Just (take) care of the basketball. We had a big lead and turn the ball over, turn the ball over, turn the ball over." The Jazz have gone 2-2 since an eight-game losing streak and arrive in Los Angeles following a heartbreaking 135-127 overtime defeat on the road against the Phoenix Suns on Friday. John Collins scored 21 points for Utah, while Walker Kessler had 19 points and a career-high 22 rebounds. The Jazz led 120-116 with 4.7 seconds remaining before two Grayson Allen 3-pointers for the Suns in the closing seconds sent the game into overtime. Phoenix scored the first eight points in the extra period to secure the victory. Utah enters on a seven-game road losing streak that includes two losses at Phoenix. The Jazz are 7-20 away from home this season. Near the bottom of the Western Conference standings, the Jazz continue to keep things positive, especially now that the trade deadline has passed. "I think the chemistry we have as a group has continued to grow as the year has gone on," coach Will Hardy said. "I know when we got in the plane yesterday, everybody was having that collective sigh of relief that we can just focus on what's next and move forward."
