I Know Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Is Going To Be Emotional, But The First Footage Had A Surprise Moment I Didn't Expect

There are some sequels fans just want to dive into as soon as possible, but I don't think Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is one of them. At least, that's my subjective opinion about this upcoming 2025 movie schedule entry, because it's going to bring creator Julian Fellowes' iconic British drama to a resounding close. Now the first footage has finally released to the public, I'm doubling down on my feelings, as it features an emotional scene with a typically stoic member of the Crawley family that feels sure to bring the house down. So what is the scene in Focus Features' upcoming drama? It's one where Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) plants a kiss on one of those very recognizable front walls. After all of the ups, downs, and everything in-between experienced in that stately manor, the teaser continues to sum it all up in a phrase we've seen since Downton Abbey 3's title reveal: 'It's time to say goodbye.' I just don't want to, despite knowing better going into this trailer. I let myself get caught up in beautiful little glimpses of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) showing up to an event dressed in her finest, the return of Julian Levinson (Paul Giamatti) being marked by his trademark ebullience, and a bunch of the family showing up to a horse racing event. But then came that moment where the Paddington franchise star bid farewell to his familial home. A scene that may have been in the works for longer than we thought. Before doing the required deep dive to revisit Downton Abbey's previous adventures through my Peacock subscription, the vague recollection that the Crawley's beautiful home has always been on the verge of bankruptcy has always been on my mind. And for a while, one year in particular on the calendar has stuck out as a potential stumbling block to the family fortune - 1929. Seeing as that's when the American financial system suffered its first major crisis, and part of the money that's kept Downton afloat is from Cora's side of the family. Elizabeth McGovern's Cora, the American fixture in the ITV hit, has been the connection to various lifelines, for better or worse. With this movie being announced as taking place in 1930, the moment has passed, and consequences will start to take shape - with plenty of Downton Abbey 3 cast members still waiting to take their places. Which now introduces the possibility that Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale may see her brother Julius coming to collect in some manner or another. Let's not forget Paul Giamatti's cryptic Downton 3 tease where he said he does 'something of real significance.' View Deal Though now that I think about it, could the return of Guy Dexter (Dominic West) be an indication that he may want to secure the location as his own? You have to admit, that possibility would not only keep Thomas Barrow (Rob James-Collier) in the house he rose through the ranks serving, it'd also be a way to keep the household staff on board after the transition. I think even Barrows' former foe Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) would begrudgingly admit that this is making the best of a sad situation. In either of these scenarios, the Crawley era of Downton Abbey looks to be at its end. The real questions left to answer are where will its inhabitants go, who will be the new owner, and is it really for the best that Matthew Goode won't be appearing in The Grand Finale? Save your energy, and your tears, as we've got until September 12th to think of what to say about the end of this pop culture favorite.

First look at final ever Downton Abbey after star confirms they won't return
The first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Fianle has been released, and it is set to be 'heartbreaking' Earlier this year, CinemaCon fans caught a glimpse of the Downton Abbey teaser, hinting at "plenty of tears" and the "heartbreaking" conclusion that marks the end of the much-loved period drama. The third and final film in the series, titled The Grand Finale, is notably missing the presence of the late Dame Maggie Smith. The first public trailer launched today and it revealed that the film will be set in 1930 and marks the return of Paul Giamatti as Cora Crawley's brother, Harold Levinson. The footage suggests a cheery outset; however, Julian Fellowes' writing may well forecast stormy weather ahead. With 1930 just a year after the Wall Street Crash and a poignant scene of Hugh Bonneville's Lord Grantham kissing the walls of Downton Abbey, fans are left speculating whether the future holds a National Trust destiny for the grand estate, reports the Express. The official synopsis for The Grand Finale states: "DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE, the cinematic return of the global phenomenon, follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s." It added: "As the beloved cast of characters navigates how to lead Downton Abbey into the future, they must embrace change and welcome a new chapter." The film features a star-studded cast including Simon Russell Beale, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Paul Giamatti and Harry Hadden-Paton. Also making an appearance is Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Alessandro Nivola, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton, Arty Froushan, Joely Richardson, Paul Copley, and Douglas Reith. It comes following the news that Matthew Goode will not reprise his role as Henry Talbot in the closing film. Though he featured in the 2019 film, the actor cited conflicting professional commitments and health problems for his absence from future sequels. In an interview with Radio Times, the 47-year-old actor detailed: "I was unavailable for the second because I was doing The Offer. Then, for the third, I was shooting this (Dept Q)," reports Devon Live. He also mentioned suffering a knee injury requiring surgery, noting: "But I also buggered my knee, and I had to have an operation. That takes weeks to get over, so I was never going to be able to do it. And let's face it, he was edging towards becoming a bit of a wet lettuce. So maybe it's a good thing." Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is set to hit UK cinemas on September 12, 2025.

Black Mirror's Eulogy episode revels in the dangers of memory and main character energy
We are all the heroes of our own stories, but that doesn't make our feelings fact. Black Mirror's newest season reminds us of that in 'Eulogy,' an intense exploration of love, grief and how technology can revisit the past. The 47-minute episode is one of the series' simplest in seven seasons, proving that sometimes less really is more. It follows the story of an isolated man who learns his ex-girlfriend has died. When her family requests that he share his memories via a new tech service called Eulogy, he's forced to reckon with decades-old heartbreak and the realization that his bitterness and anger have strangled his memories. Paul Giamatti stars as Phillip, the misanthrope in question, and delivers a gut-punching performance full of subtle nuances and emotion. When the AI service tries to dislodge his memories of his ex, Carol, he can't bring her to mind. A guide convinces him to pull out a series of photographs of his time with Carol to help, and launches him into the actual photos to have a look around. The only problem? Phillip has scratched out Carol's face in every instance, and can no longer remember what she looked like. It's a nostalgic reminder that back before smartphones and digital technology, photos didn't capture every instance of a person's life. Once the snaps that did exist were ruined, there was no getting them back. In 'Eulogy,' that story device allows viewers to revisit the past through Phillip's eyes as he recalls the strong love he once held for this woman and the anger that consumed him after they broke up. There's a slight mystery as to what happened as the story unfolds, and new insights as to memory versus circumstance as the Guide (Patsy Ferran) points out inconsistencies in the memories Phillip recalls. It becomes clear Phillip has painted a victim narrative in his head after his loss; however, a picture, as they say, is worth a thousand words. As he progresses through his memories, Phillip makes some hard realizations. It's a beautifully delivered story about how things can go so wrong when we fail to be objective. As Phillip turns to the bottle to quell his anger and pain, his actions have devastating consequences that he's failed to see for years. Rather than deal with his grief and resolve his issues, he's turned to a sad life of solitude. In the hands of Giamatti, the character gets under your skin and lingers, and Ferran is every bit his equal. Together they deliver a powerful message about how anguish comes in many shapes and forms, whether grieving a death or the death of a relationship. It's also a reminder that when we self-soothe with substances, or these days via things such as doomscrolling, we can miss the very real life that's going on around us. For Black Mirror, a series that typically dwells on the devastating effects of technology, it's a surprisingly uplifting and relatable episode that highlights some of the good that can come from these societal advancements. Not everyone wants the option to linger in the past, but addressing it for what it was rather than repressing it or holding onto bad memories can ultimately be healing. It's a standout episode in the Twilight Zone-inspired series and one of the best reasons to tune into the latest season. 'Eulogy' might not have the Hollywood noir appeal of Season 7's 'Hotel Reverie,' the relevance of privatized health care that 'Common People' does, or the flash of the 'USS Callister' sequel episode, 'USS Callister: Into Infinity.' But what it is is a deeply moving story about the lasting effects of love even after our strongest memories fade away.

‘The Office' spinoff ‘The Paper' first look and premiere month revealed during NBC Upfront
From a paper company to a paper. During NBC's Upfront presentation on Monday, Peacock revealed the first look at The Paper, the upcoming spinoff of The Office. No specific release date was revealed at this time. Created by The Office boss Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Late Night With Conan O'Brien and the spouse of former The Office star Ellie Kemper), the spinoff series brings the documentary crew that immortalized paper company Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch into the world of newspaper publishing and focuses on a struggling Midwestern paper in Toledo, Ohio. Cast members include Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and original The Office star Oscar Nuñez, who reprises his role as Oscar Martinez and can be seen in the new photo. Outside of Nuñez, no other original The Office cast member is expected to appear in the new series. Gleeson, Impacciatore, and Nuñez appeared during Monday's Upfront presentation but didn't reveal any new footage from The Paper. Nuñez, however, joked that he was excited to see Oscar in a more urban setting since Toledo has three times the population of Scranton, Pa. Previously, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daniels teased what to expect from the new series. 'It's about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that's much reduced from its glory days. A lot of the story lines are about how this guy, Domhnall Gleeson's character, is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn't have the budget for hiring reporters, and he has to use all the staff that work there on a volunteer basis to be reporters. They're completely untrained and don't know what they're doing,' Daniels said. 'It's a fruitful premise. There's a tremendous history for local papers. The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody's news for free, and all the ad revenue going to Google.' The Office won five overall Emmy Awards in its lifetime, including Best Comedy Series. Overall, the NBC comedy received 42 nominations, including multiple bids for star Steve Carell.
