Man behind United's Asian tour already planning for big names to visit Hong Kong in 2026

The man who engineered Manchester United's post-season Asian tour said he was already planning to bring more big clubs to Hong Kong next year. Advertisement Paul Kam called the Premier League strugglers' visit a qualified success, after a combined 105,648 people attended games against Asean All-Stars, in Malaysia, and a select XI in Hong Kong. He did not want to comment on whether his ProEvents business recorded a profit or loss from a venture that reportedly earned money-starved United around £8 million (US$10.8 million). And despite 'thoroughly enjoying' Friday's match at Hong Kong Stadium, Kam said he would need some convincing before arranging any more end-of-season fixtures. Wedged between the climax of a 10-month campaign and the June international window, Manchester United's five-day trip attracted criticism over player welfare concerns. Advertisement A number of head coach Ruben Amorim's squad were reportedly grumpy about being ordered overseas, an impression heightened after Amad Diallo raised his middle finger at a supporter in Malaysia, then surly winger Alejandro Garnacho posted a snap from the flight home on social media, accompanied by the caption 'finally'.

Big 3 to miss Hong Kong game, but Man United ‘not trying to cheat fans' promoter says

The man behind Manchester United's tour of Asia has promised some of the club's biggest stars would play in Hong Kong on Friday, and pushed back at criticism after it was revealed three would miss the game to attend a sponsor's event in India. Advertisement And Paul Kam, chairman of ProEvents, said the Premier League club were 'not trying to cheat fans' by sending Harry Maguire, Andre Onana and Diogo Dalot to a meet-and-greet with sponsors Apollo Tyres immediately after Wednesday's match against Asean All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur. The rest of Ruben Amorim's squad fly to Hong Kong on Thursday, and Kam said Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro would all play a city select XI, although qualified that by saying it was 'the manager's choice how he uses them, whether they play full matches'. Some 30,000 tickets have been bought for Friday's game, and Kam said people were not paying to watch individuals, but the team as a whole. Expecting a full Premier League XI was unrealistic, the promoter said. 'I have never known a team bring more than 25 players, they have brought a much larger squad [32], a first-team squad,' Kam said. 'Manchester United are not trying to cheat fans … or me as a promoter. Advertisement 'I have worked with them for many years and I think they genuinely want to say thank you to the fans here - even with a small window, they want to come to see the fans. It is a rare opportunity for people to see these players.' It had been reported that a number of United players put their hands up for the India trip to shorten their time away, and be closer to popular footballer holiday destination Dubai.

Liverpool to play pre-season game in Hong Kong, sources say, EPL trio linked to event

Liverpool and two other English Premier League clubs will come to Hong Kong in the summer as part of their pre-season tour of Asia, multiple sources told the Post on Friday. Advertisement It is not yet known if all three Premier League sides would be in the city at the same time, but the expectation is at least one game would be an all-British affair, sources said. The sources, who have ties to the event but asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorised to discuss the plans publicly, said the date and a venue for the fixtures were still being decided. However, rival parties appear on a collision course in their bids to lure big-name European clubs to Hong Kong, after it emerged that Tatler Asia and local promoters were plotting matches at Kai Tak Sports Park in July. Leading promoter Paul Kam said last week he would have news about summer fixtures 'very soon', and arrangements to stage major marquee games at Kai Tak's 50,000-seat stadium were '90 per cent done'. Liverpool manager Arne Slot is reportedly bringing his team to the city later this year. Photo: Reuters Kam had also confirmed that a local club would be involved in either a one-off game or a four-team tournament.
