Research Initiative Extended: SUNY Potsdam Fellowship Program continues through 2025
POTSDAM, N.Y. (WWTI) – The T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowship Program has been extended through 2025, with the approval of the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at SUNY Potsdam. April 3: SUNY Potsdam hosts Author Robin Wall Kimmerer This program's goal is to inspire faculty from 11 institutions of higher education in the area to do research on important problems facing North Country communities and offer suggestions for potential fixes, according to SUNY Potsdam. Teachers and non-teaching staff from the colleges may apply. The 11 institutions include: Paul Smith's College; St. Lawrence University; SUNY Canton; SUNY Plattsburgh; SUNY Potsdam; Adirondack Community College; Clarkson University; Clinton Community College; Jefferson Community College; SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry; and North Country Community College. The program is designed to increase academic and community collaboration. Preference will be given to proposals with a compelling statement of support from a local person or group that outlines the ways in which the project's outcomes would benefit the community. This program is funded by the SUNY Potsdam Provost's Office through the Campaign for the T. Urling and Mabel Walker Research Fellowship Program. The college says that each year, a maximum of two $5,000 research projects may be granted. Each approved project's prize amount will be decided by the Walker Fellowship Steering Committee. Paul Smith's helps tackle Climate Change: Community Listening Sessions Underway
PAUL SMITHS, N.Y. (WWTI) – Paul Smith's College, in partnership with The Wild Center, Adirondack Research Consortium and community partners announced they are continuing efforts to hold community listening sessions to address the growing impacts of climate change in the Adirondack-North Country region. Climate change added 41 days of dangerous heat around world The College says as the area experiences rising temperatures, heavier rainfall and unpredictable weather patterns, these changes affect roads, homes, businesses, jobs, safety networks and the overall quality of life. The Adirondack Climate Outreach & Resilience Network looks to bring together community members, organizations and local leaders to collectively identify solutions that will help the region in adapting to these changing conditions. The network spans the 14-county region of Northern New York State, according to the college. The college says, that by participating in these listening sessions, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences, concerns and ideas for a better future. The information collected will be used to develop a Rural Resilience Roadmap and be shared with Federal & State agencies & philanthropic organizations to bring funding resources and technical know-how to the North Country. NY Climate Change Superfund Act signed into law Multiple listening sessions are scheduled: Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.– : Virtual session on Housing, hosted with Northern Forest Center; Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. — Upper Hudson Communities: Chestertown Town Hall, hosted with Warren County Climate Smart Task Force and Lake Champlain Lake George Regional Planning Board; Monday, Feb. 24, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. — Mohawk Valley Communities: Mohawk Valley Community College – Utica, hosted with Mohawk Valley Economic Development District; Thursday, Feb. 27 — : listening session, hosted with Adirondack Food System Network; and Sunday, April 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — Northern Adirondack Communities, on the campus of Paul Smith's College.
