Century of shield battles for seaside rivals

PHOTO: GETTY A hundred years of rugby history will be celebrated on Saturday when Sumner and New Brighton clash for the Falton Shield. The trophy, contested annually between the two seaside clubs, marks its 100th anniversary this weekend. The first match was won by New Brighton in 1925. New Brighton head coach Scott Pawson, who played in the fixture during the late 1990s, now leads the club's premier side and knows exactly what the rivalry means. 'Any time I play in a game or coach a game, I make sure our guys know the history of it. 'The games I played in were huge, close games. I can't recall a game that was a massive blowout. 'It's always very close physical games, and it will be the same on the weekend,' Pawson said. Sumner life member and current division 2 coach Robbie Timo has his own fond memories of Falton Shield clashes. 'It was lost for a few years in their offices. I think it was 1978 or 1979 until 1991 or 1992 – they were clearing it out and they found the shield in the back. "They brought it down and said, 'we're playing for the shield', and I remember going into the shed and saying, 'we're grabbing that shield today', and we won 9-3.' Another standout memory for Timo came in 1996. 'We were playing at Rawhiti and there was a real low-lying fog. It was so cold and we managed to win., It was really cool because it was just fog all around you.' Despite the two teams' contrasting fortunes this season – New Brighton sit top of the table with four bonus-point wins, while Sumner are winless in 11th – Pawson expects a tough battle. 'Games like this bring out a different beast and I know their coaches will be making sure they are primed for this. 'The reward is competition points, but also that shield, and it does mean a lot to both clubs.' Now colloquially known as the 'Seaside Shield', New Brighton are the current holders after a 20–7 win last year. The other matches on Saturday see University of Canterbury – behind New Brighton only on points difference – visit Belfast, while third-place HSOB play Christchurch. DCL Shield holders Linwood take on Marist Albion, who dispatched Belfast 71-19 on Saturday. Sydenham also host Burnside and Shirley will take on Lincoln University. Minteh strike cancelled out amid VAR uproar at the Amex
Albion saw a precious lead slip away amid penalty confusion at the Amex. Yankuba Minteh's first-half opener against his old club was eventually cancelled out from the penalty spot by Alexander Isak. A point apiece was not of great use to either side in their slightly different pursuits of Europe. And it turned into a torrid second half for referee Craig Pawson, with three penalty incidents in the spotlight. Albion welcomed back Jan Paul van Hecke to the starting line-up and Adam Webster and Igor to the matchday 20. But there was no Kaoru Mitoma, whose knack of getting into central areas has been so valuable during the recent absence of Joao Pedro. Newcastle, without Joelinton, named the XI which started the previous game against Ipswich. The Albion changes meant a return on the right for Minteh against his old club and he needed early attention for what looked a blow to the knee as his side made quite a cautious start. Bart Verbruggen had to hold a couple of early crosses, one aerial and the other along the deck. Pawson also seemed to think he got a touch to a low drive from Harvey Barnes after Mats Wieffer and van Hecke got in a tangle to allow him in to the left of goal. Newcastle were penalised at the subsequent corner. Albion offered little – and looked short of ideas of how to play their way through when Toon were set in their shape. But, after a decent little spell of pressure they went ahead just before the half-hour. Toon dealt with a dangerous cross by Simon Adingra. But the ball was worked to Minteh on the right edge of the box. He cut inside Tino Livramento, then Sandro Tonali and, with his shot found a gap inside the far post, with a deflection off Dan Burn. It was a great moment for Minteh and there was some sort of exchange between him and the away fans afterwards. It was also against the run of play. As Newcastle sought a riposte, Verbruggen had to tip over van Hecke's mis-directed header and hold a curler from Bruno Guimaraes. But Albion finished the half quite strongly and went in with an advantage. Quite a bright start to the second half by the Seagulls saw the ball nicked away from Danny Welbeck in front of goal after Minteh seemed to have picked him out. But Fabian Hurzeler opted for his first change as Wieffer, on a yellow for delaying a free-kick in the first-half, was penalised for his challenge on Tonali. Newcastle fans half-heartedly chanted 'off, off, off' and Hurzeler took that option by sending on Tariq Lamptey. When Anthony Gordon then went on for the visitors, it meant both players red-carded in the FA Cup tie between these sides had been introduced. Pawson pointed to the spot on 57 minutes when Gordon tripped over Lamptey's dangling leg – only for VAR Andy Madley to tell him it happened just outside the box. It was not Madley's last involvement. When Joe Willock went down 14 minutes later as van Hecke shaped to tackle, the well-placed Pawson thought long hard and again signalled for a spot kick. But it looked a dive and the referee decided as much after being invited to the monitor. The visitors, though, DID have a spot kick on 88 minutes, after another VAR check and delay. Yasin Ayari was ruled to have handled Fabian Schar's free-kick, conceded somewhat contentiously by van Hecke, and Alexander Isak sent Verbruggen the wrong way. Both teams might have won it in nine frenetic added minutes. Diego Gomez headed horribly wide from a superb free-kick curled in by his fellow substitute Brajan Gruda. And Verbruggen made a very sharp save from Wilson's blast. Homeless forgotten in federal election platforms, say advocates
Homeless people also not well represented due to barriers to voting While the federal parties have been campaigning on promises to build more homes in Canada, advocates say those most in need of those homes have been left out of the conversation. "I see a lot of … hopelessness around finding a stable housing space," said Nivethine Mahendran who works with Choices for Youth, an organization that works with homeless youth. Both the Liberal and Conservative parties have promised to build more homes and eliminate the GST for first-time home buyers. But buying a home isn't an option homeless youth even consider according to Mahendran. She says the concerns that she's hearing when she speaks with homeless youth are not being addressed in the election platforms. She says they're looking for more affordable rental options, rent control, and increased funding to non-profits to expand housing initiatives They would also like to see more single-occupancy housing options and other income support programs boosted, she said. "That money hasn't changed over the last couple of years, whereas rental prices have just skyrocketed," said Mahendran. And housing is a crucial part in dealing with other life issues. "Whether it's addictions or they're escaping domestic intimate partner violence," she said. "You need a stable space in order to make some kind of progress on the other issues you're handling." Homelessness not addressed The executive director of End Homelessness St. John's, Doug Pawson, says homeless individuals have strong interest in the federal election, and are watching for promises to improve housing. But he says homelessness isn't well addressed in any of the party platforms. "There's not really any mention of homelessness programming and investments in any of the platforms," said Pawson. Pawson said he would like to see promises to create more affordable rentals, more social housing, and incentives for landlords to boost supply. While Pawson says he is happy to see a commitment to housing development, the housing strategy needs to be more robust. "Building our way out of the crisis is only helpful for … more or less 1 segment of the population, not so much the vulnerable segment," said Pawson. Pawson said he would like to see commitments made by the parties to support Canada's current homelessness strategies, including the National Housing Strategy, and Reaching Home: Canada's Homelessness Strategy. Pawson said the government's current target is to reduce chronic homelessness by 50 per cent, but noted that last year the parliamentary budget office reported that they would need to increase funding sevenfold to reach that target. "It's a bit disappointing not to see any acknowledgement of how important housing and homelessness in those two [strategies]" said Pawson. Barriers to voting Pawson and Mahendran say that they have seen an interest from homeless individuals in voting, but barriers to voting often means that demographic isn't well represented in electoral decisions. "Not everybody will have a current ID that shows an address or they may not have an address," said Pawson. "Voting, it can be probably a bit of a luxury for folks who are just struggling to survive day-to-day" He said homeless people might need someone to go with them to polling stations to vouch for them and verify their identity. Residents of transitional housing facility, Horizons at 106, will also receive a letter of confirmation of residence that they can also use. Transportation to polls is another barrier, said Pawson adding that End Homelessness will be providing transportation to polls for some individuals. At Choices for Youth, Mahendran says they try to empower homeless youth to go out and vote because participating in democracy often feels impossible for them. "They feel like it's a space outside of what they're experiencing," she said. "They don't feel like they can connect with the candidates." Mahendran says she encourages youth to support each other to vote. "And then also having them go into the community and say here, this is how you can kind of engage productively with civic engagement and democracy," she said.

Nunes boosts Manchester City's top-five hopes with late winner over Aston Villa
In the tussle for a Champions League berth Matheus Nunes's added-time winner sent Manchester City delirious, shattered Aston Villa, and disappointed Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United and Chelsea in the race for the top five. Jérémy Doku's slicing cross from the left was hammered in by the right-back and at the final whistle City contemplated their last four outings of Wolves, Southampton, Bournemouth and Fulham, a run that, following this victory, surely makes them favourites to secure European Cup football next season. A very short 17 seconds were all Villa needed to splay City and cause Pep Guardiola to despair. The champions' midfield slumbered, Youri Tielemans made a mug of Josko Gvardiol and found Rashford, who twisted Rúben Dias's blood and shot: the ball bounced off the base of Stefan Ortega's left post and the game was still scoreless. Not for long. City have lacked speed this term – in thought and execution – but this was exactly how Omar Marmoush undid the visitors. The Egyptian swooped around Matty Cash and fired in a cross from the left that deflected into Bernardo Silva: the Portuguese unloaded and a weak Emiliano Martínez parry only pushed the ball in. Advertisement Rashford's United connection meant he was booed each time he took possession so when roaring along the left in the move that led to the penalty he could chuckle. The ball came to Jacob Ramsey, Dias barged him over, and Craig Pawson initially refused the spot-kick. It seemed an obvious one so there was scant surprise when the video assistant referee, John Brooks, sent Pawson to the monitor. To Guardiola's fury the referee now gave the penalty and Rashford, via a slow boot-shuffle, fooled Ortega and rolled the ball in to the goalkeeper's left. Guardiola was booked for the rage directed at the assistant referee – provoking disgust – his anger having ratcheted up when the incident was replayed on the stadium screen before Rashford's penalty. So, we had a contest that bubbled. A player still on United's books had scored the equaliser, City felt swindled (wrongly), and Pawson fielded jeers each time he failed to give home side what their fans wished for: basically, every decision. Martínez's self-proclaimed 'all powerful' on-field persona nearly took another battering moments later. A poor clearing kick from the Argentinian went straight to Silva, who headed it back into the area for Marmoush to take aim. But the keeper rushed out and smothered the ball, so he and Villa escaped. Advertisement Rashford, in for Ollie Watkins as one of five Emery changes, was near unplayable. After Lucas Digne was found on the left, the Villa No 9 fashioned a sprint that kept him onside, shredded City's rearguard. But a clumsy touch, an achilles heel for Rashford, followed and an attempted dink above the advancing Ortega was fluffed . Guardiola's two changes were James McAtee and Mateo Kovacic for Savinho and Nico González but at the close of an invigorating period it was Rashford, again, who was the factor of the fresh personnel. Ignoring more derision from the home faithful, the 27-year-old arrowed in a corner from the left: Amadou Onana rose to head it and would have given Villa the lead but for a block. The point each team was headed for was not the best in the hunt for Champions League qualification, so a Morgan Rogers burst forward tried to wrest the contest his side's way. The Villa forward went down under Josko Gvardiol's attentions, but Pawson was not interested. On show was a bout between two foes who parried, jabbed and counterpunched so, now, City did the latter, launching a raid that won a free-kick and pushing Villa back. Advertisement McAtee's delivery, from an inside-left channel, was scrambled out by Onana for a corner and City had three in succession: one from the right, the others from the left, all taken by Kevin De Bruyne. In City's last home game McAtee scored – against Crystal Palace – while spurning several chances and a further miss when Nico O'Reilly delivered from the left again suggested he may not be as lethal as required. Towards the end Marmoush netted but was ruled offside. Next came Nunes' priceless moment of glory.
