Two men from Champaign, Urbana arrested for armed robbery in Paxton
PAXTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Two men from Champaign-Urbana were arrested in Ford County after police said an online sale turned into an armed robbery last weekend. WCIA's partners at the Ford County Chronicle reported that the Paxton Police Department announced the arrests on Thursday. Devin Starkey, 23 of Champaign, and Steffonce Moffitt, 22 of Urbana, were arrested the previous day on charges of armed robbery and for violating parole. In addition, Moffitt is accused of driving with a suspended driver's license. Both are in custody at the Ford County Jail, with formal charges pending. Five cadets arrested after fight at Lincoln's ChalleNGe Academy, police say Coy Cornett, Paxton's Police Chief, said the robbery happened Saturday. The victim was selling two pairs of shoes online and they were contacted by Starkey, who offered to buy them. The victim met Starkey at Fulton Park, and he allegedly displayed a gun. He took the two pairs of shoes that the victim was selling and $120, Cornett said. Moffitt, meanwhile, is accused of demanding money from other people who were in the victim's car. The pair allegedly fled south in a gray Hyundai Sonata. Using automated license plate readers, authorities were able to use the Sonata to identify Starkey and Moffitt as suspects. Early Wednesday morning, officers from Paxton, Gibson City, the Ford County Sheriff's Office and SWAT teams from Champaign County, executed search warrants in Urbana near North Gregory and Eads Streets and in Champaign near Crescent and Rodney Drives. In addition, officers conducted a 'consent search' in the area of Mattis Avenue and William Street in Champaign. Starkey and Moffitt were arrested, Cornett said, and the gray Sonata was seized as evidence. For more details, visit the Ford County Chronicle online. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
