The Sri Chinmoy Peace Run comes to Mt Manypeaks, Parklands, Little Grove and Spencer Park primary schools

An international team of peace runners arrived in Albany on Tuesday as part of their 111-day, 15,000km torch relay around Australia. The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run is the world's longest torch relay and has featured humanitarians and celebrities including Nelson Mandela, Cathy Freeman and Mother Teresa since it was founded in 1987. This year's relay started and will finish in Canberra. It came to Albany via Esperance before moving on to Denmark and Walpole. The 16 runners stopped off at Mt Manypeaks, Little Grove, Parklands and Spencer Park primary schools. Runner Grahak Cunningham said it was an opportunity for children 'to feel part of a worldwide family'. At Parklands, the children sang the Cat Stevens song Peace Train before gathering around the peace tree, planted when the relay came through Albany a decade ago. Parklands Primary School principal Joanne Thiel was presented with a painting by Sri Chinmoy and a new plaque for the tree. She said the visit had been a great success. 'The choir welcomed the runners with the song which they had learned as part of our Harmony Day project last term,' she said. 'The new plaque was a lovely touch because the original had come off the paperbark tree.' The relay's itinerary always includes school visits and stops with community groups with the torch passing from hand to hand. Jeremy Hadlow, principal at Spencer Park, said the message of peace was a welcome one. 'It's a message which resonates with the school and applies also to families and the broader community,' he said. 'At Spencer Park, we are certainly an advocate for that.' Organisers estimate more than eight million people have held the torch since 1987 as the runners pass through more than 70 countries every year. The run is the brainchild of Sri Chinmoy, an athlete and spiritual leader who was born in what is now Bangladesh. He moved to America in 1964, setting up a meditation centre and advocating a path to God through prayer and meditation, and world peace through sport and athleticism, before he died in 2007. The relay participants included Canberra marathon runner Prachar Stegemann and Ashprihanal Pekka Aalto, the Finn who holds the world record for 5000km.

Photo: Christchurch City Council Christchurch's Peace Train has arrived at the end of its biggest season yet - with more than 10,000 passengers taking a ride along its new route. The miniature train, gifted to Christchurch by Yusuf Islam following the 2019 terror attacks, operates on a loop through the Botanic Gardens. The 2024/25 season started on September 1, 2024. Over 25 weekends, a total of 10,743 passengers rode the Peace Train. 'We were delighted to see an increase in numbers jumping aboard this year, which we partly put down to the new route we've designed for the electric train,' said Christchurch City Council parks programme and partnership manager Dr Roslyn Kerr. 'We've previously had trouble with the battery going flat quickly, but after changing the route from a gravel path to concrete, we found the issue was solved.' The change has made the route slightly shorter, meaning more people can ride the train in the same amount of time each week. Photo: Christchurch City Council Over the season the train chugged along the tracks at Riverside Market's 5th birthday celebration and the Unity Sunday event, with its busiest day in the gardens on March 23 with 526 passengers. The four carriages can fit four adults each, meaning there were over 600 runs throughout the season. 'We're incredibly grateful to the 41 volunteers who keep the train running - we're lucky to have such an enthusiast group, and we're always looking for new recruits,' Dr Kerr says. The Peace Train runs every Sunday from September to the end of April, between 10am and 1pm. The train leaves behind the kiosk in the Botanic Gardens and follows a loop around the Observatory Lawn and Cuningham House. Parks staff will undertake training for volunteer train operators in August for the 2025/26 season. To register your interest, click here.

Featured pricing is subject to change. All aboard the 'Peace Train.' Yusuf/Cat Stevens just announced he's embarking on his first North American tour since 2016. This time around, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is promoting the release of his forthcoming memoir 'Cat on the Road to Findout,' due out in the U.S. and Canada on Oct. 7. Advertisement Midway through the North American leg of the run, the 76-year-old singer-songwriter will make one New York City stop although that could change due to high demand. As of now, his lone Big Apple gig is scheduled to take place Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Beacon Theatre. At all gigs, Yusuf will engage in 'in-depth conversations' about the book and perform 'select unplugged performances of songs.' While we don't know exactly what that entails, our team looked into his archives on Set List FM and found he played fan favorites like 'The Wind,' 'Moonshadow,' 'The First Cut Is The Deepest,' 'Wild World,' 'If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out' and many more at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival. Advertisement The autobiography tracks Yusuf/Stevens' artistic career from his beginnings in the '60s to his '70s ubiquity while touching on his 1975 near-drowning that influenced his religious conversion to Islam and name change to Yusuf Islam and subsequent return to the industry in the '90s. 'Having passed through the exhaustingly complex maze of everyday material life, ascending the dizzying heights of wealth, recognition, and artistic achievements, I think I've got a few things to share,' Stevens shared in a press release. 'Keeping an open mind was part of the nature I instinctively maintained as a creative songwriter. Nothing was off-bounds. Music was a way of discovering my purpose within the universe. I just kept on exploring, reading, and learning more, ignoring myths and warnings and crossing dangerous-looking bridges into the vast ranges of philosophies and through the veils of the spiritual unknown. Now I have written a book which explains what I've learned and the stories along the way. That doesn't make me a teacher, but more of a potential specimen for those who are searching and pursuing happiness on all sides of the divide. Believe me, folks, it's out there!' Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming North American Yusuf/Cat Stevens shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale for the 'Cat on the Road to Findout Tour' is Friday, May 23. They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event. Yusuf/Cat Stevens set list Advertisement As noted above, Yusuf/Stevens performed at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival. According to Set List FM, here's what he took to the stage including a pair of exciting covers. '01.) 'The Wind' 02.) 'Moonshadow' 03.) 'I Love My Dog / Here Comes My Baby' 04.) 'Father and Son' Yusuf/Cat Stevens new music In June 2023, Yusuf/Stevens released his 17th studio album 'King of a Land.' Amazingly, more than 50 years removed from his heyday, the gifted vocalist sounds just as powerful and lilting he did on 1970's seminal 'Tea for the Tillerman' and 1972's 'Catch Bull At Four.' The major difference is the production value; Yusuf/Stevens trades in stripped-down, sparse arrangements for fleshed-out, polished studio instrumentations. As a result, some tracks are majestic like the plaintive album opener 'Train on a Hill' and stirring title track 'King of a Land.' Goofy rockers like 'Pagan Run' and 'All Nights, All Days' seem out of character for the sensitive, serious star but are a welcome respite. All that being said, the obvious highlights here are the two tunes that sound most like something Yusuf/Stevens would have recorded in 1971. They are the modest 'Son of Mary' and singalong jingle jangle 'Take The World Apart' that sounds like a Paul Simon outtake. Both are wonderful and worth adding to your classic rock playlist. Want to listen for yourself? You can find 'King of a Land' here.
