Sussex guesthouse named one of UK's 'best hotels for under £150 a night'

A guesthouse in Sussex has been named among the UK's "best hotels for under £150 a night". No 124 by GuestHouse, on Brighton's seafront, was ranked 20th on the list of 33 reasonably priced hotels by The Times. It was described as a "masterclass in maximalist design" with a "funky twist" in the Times' review. The 32-room hotel, in King's Road, was praised for its characterful rooms, each complete with a vinyl collection and record player, and its "fun and funky" art by local artists. The hotel, which is spread across four townhouses, was also complimented for its "vintage furniture finds" and "gorgeous natural light". The review added: "This 32-room hotel on Brighton's seafront is a masterclass in maximalist design thanks to fun and funky art by local artists (everything from wool pieces to wall quilts and stained-glass installations), vintage furniture finds, a vinyl library and lots of games and books to browse. "There's lots of gorgeous natural light in the daytime. "Touches of beach whimsy are particularly apt and much better than the usual stripy cushions." The group took over and renovated the hotel and have three other properties in York, Bath and Margate. The Times' overall score for the hotel was eight out of ten, with a score of nine out of ten for its "characterful" rooms and suites. "Record players come as standard and though the selection feels a tad random, the GuestHouse vinyl in each room, featuring artists with a connection to Sussex (Rizzle Kicks, The Kooks, The Cure), is wonderfully charming." The hotel was also praised for its restaurant, Pearly Cow, which was described as "refined and comforting". The Pearly Cow restaurant was also praised (Image: GuestHouse) The Times said: "The restaurant, Pearly Cow, has become a signature of this small group; each menu is slightly different but all have a mix of fire (dishes done on the grill) and ice (raw seafood). "The cooking is that sweet spot on the Venn diagram of refined and comforting. "Highlights include mini tacos bursting with sweet lobster meat; juicy scallops cured in yuzu and cucumber; the loveliest lemon sole; and moreish beef-fat chips." However, it was noted that breakfast "isn't quite up to the same calibre yet", with slower service and undercooked eggs. The hotel also has a bar serving cocktails, a games room with chessboards and domino sets and a courtyard with a central olive tree. Guests can also help themselves to complimentary snacks from the pantry. A spa with rooms for massages and facials is set to open in 2025.
