Topeka police arrest Pearson Carter III, 19, in city's latest homicide
Topeka police arrested a man June 12 in connection with crimes linked to the gunshot homicide that killed 29-year-old Topekan Ian A. Mwaniki nine days earlier in the 700 block of SW Western Avenue.
Pearson Carter III, 19, of Topeka, was booked at 6:45 p.m. into the Shawnee County Jail, where records showed he was being held June 13 without bond in connection with one count each of intentional second-degree murder, aggravated battery, knowingly discharging a firearm within city limits and criminal carry of a shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches long.
Formal charges hadn't been filed.
Mwaniki was pronounced deceased at the scene after police were called about 7:50 p.m. June 3 to the place where he was shot, said police Lt. Donna Eubanks. He became Topeka's eighth homicide victim this year.
The homicide was committed on Pearson's 19th birthday, according to jail records.
