Three pedestrians killed in separate incidents in the Florida Keys, FHP says

Three pedestrians were killed in the Florida Keys in two separate car crashes late last week, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. On Friday, a 70-year-old man from North Carolina was walking on the sidewalk along the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 at mile marker 90 in Plantation Key around 8:40 p.m. when a Hyundai IONIQ drove off the highway and hit him, FHP Master Sgt. Pedro Reinoso said in a statement. The 46-year-old Florida man, who police had not named as of Sunday, stayed on scene, and a criminal investigation is pending, Reinoso said. The FHP has also not named the victim, who died after being taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier. The night before, around 8:05 p.m., a couple from Ohio was walking across U.S. 1 at mile marker 79 in Upper Matecumbe Key when they were struck by a Kia sedan driving south on the highway, Reinoso said. The 78-year-old woman died at the scene, and her 81-year-old husband died after paramedics took him to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami-Dade County, Reinoso said. Again, the FHP did not name the victims nor the driver as of Sunday. Reinoso said alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.
