Kansas Rep. Davids visits restaurant, talks efforts to lower egg prices
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Despite the average cost of eggs falling in the last week, according to the USDA. It could be a few more weeks until you see lower prices at the grocery store.
Restaurant owners are having to get creative to keep up with those higher costs. Tine Yake, the owner of Wooden Spoon in Overland Park, says the price of a case of 15 dozen eggs has tripled in recent months.
What's cheaper in the US: The chicken or the egg?
'We went from $38 for 15 dozen, and within two weeks, it went as high as $140 for the same case,' Yake said. 'Then, within a week, it was up to $150.'
Pegah's Family Restaurant is paying $125 for a case of 15 dozen eggs. In the past, it has cost them $25-$30 per case.
Owner Moe Sharifi says they order 30 cases weekly for each of the four Pegah's restaurants.
'Now we're paying about $12,000 more than what we used to be,' Sharifi explained.
Despite the spike in egg prices, Pegah's menu prices remain the same.
'We have regular customers every single day that support us (and have been) for years. We've been in business for 37 years, and we don't want to add $0.50 right now to the eggs. We're hoping the price will come down so we don't have to do that,' Sharifi explained.
The Wooden Spoon in Overland Park is taking a market price approach.
'We were going to change our prices, and I thought it would not work because the prices kept fluctuating. So we put a sign on our menu that our egg prices are going to be at market price,' Yake explained. 'So, you know, with steakhouses, when you go to a steakhouse, and you pay market price. Why not the eggs?'
Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids visited the Wooden Spoon Tuesday and discussed actions to lower costs.
Including the bipartisan Healthy Poultry and Indemnification Act (HPAI). HPAI would ensure fair compensation for all farms affected by avian flu, including those in both infected and buffer zones.
The bill helps farmers stay in business and resume production, lowering egg prices for consumers.
'Where we can find good policy to push forward in a bipartisan way, I think we have to do that, and I think this (HPAI Act) is exactly that legislation,' Davids explained. 'When it comes to supporting our farmers, when it comes to supporting the ag sector, especially here in Kansas, you're going to see people from both sides of the aisle.'
Davids talked with Yake about her challenges as a small business owner due to high egg costs.
'Kansas businesses shouldn't have to make tough choices due to forces beyond their control, and hardworking Kansans shouldn't have to pay more while corporations rake in record profits. That's why I'm backing bipartisan legislation to support poultry growers impacted by recent disease outbreaks and urging the USDA to take swift action to stabilize prices.'
