Severe storm damages multiple planes at North Perry Airport; facility temporarily closed

A severe thunderstorm with strong, damaging winds tore through the area surrounding North Perry Airport on Friday evening, damaging several aircraft and prompting a temporary airport closure, officials said. "At approximately 6 p.m., the area surrounding North Perry Airport (HWO) experienced a severe thunderstorm, which brought strong damaging winds," said Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport spokesperson Arlene Satchell. "Several aircraft were severely damaged. As a result, HWO is closed until 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 24 to allow the Broward County Aviation Department to continue an initial damage assessment at our general aviation airport." Elsewhere, Pembroke Pines police said several power lines were knocked down between Palm Avenue and Northwest 72nd Avenue near Pines Boulevard. Some homes in the area may be without power temporarily, authorities said.

Confrontation leads to shooting at Pembroke Pines gas station, police say

Police responded to a shooting at a Pembroke Pines gas station on Monday afternoon, where two men became involved in a confrontation that led to gunfire, authorities said. While the scene at Flamingo Road and Taft Street sparked panic among bystanders, police confirmed that no one was struck by the gunfire. Confrontation between acquaintances turns violent According to Pembroke Pines Police Sgt. Jason Palant, the two individuals met at the gas station, where an altercation escalated. "We're still trying to do the investigation to determine that, but it looks like at some point, both individuals ended up at this gas station where a confrontation ensued," Palant said. "It does not appear that anyone was struck at this time." No injuries among customers or bystanders Several people were nearby at the time, including customers at the gas pumps and inside the station, but none were injured, Palant added. Both men involved in the incident are currently being questioned at the Pembroke Pines Police Department as investigators work to determine what sparked the dispute and whether charges will be filed. The investigation remains ongoing.

Broward 10th-grader threatened to ‘shoot up' high school, police say

A Broward 10-grader was arrested at his home Wednesday night, accused of writing a threat on social media to 'shoot up' a high school, police said. The 15-year-old boy, a student at South Broward High School in Hollywood, was messaging in a group chat on Snapchat on Wednesday evening with other students and wrote threats of a shooting at Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Amanda Conwell, a Pembroke Pines Police spokesperson, said in a news release Thursday. One of the other students in the Snapchat group called police, and Threat Assessment Team detectives went to the boy's home, Conwell said. He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center and is facing one count of electronic threats to kill, which is a felony in Florida. The boy is one of several to be arrested throughout the 2024-2025 school year for making a written threat. Law enforcement agencies and Broward County Public Schools officials continually remind parents and students about the consequences of making the threats, which often lead to expulsion and sometimes costly police investigations. Last week, a Coral Springs Charter School student was arrested after allegedly writing a similar threat to 'shoot up' the school, Coral Springs Police said. At the start of the school year, nine students ages 11 to 15 had been arrested within one month for making threats, which were often posted on Snapchat, Instagram or TikTok. 'Students aren't getting the message' on school threats, superintendent says after another arrest
