Soil depression at Jalan Batu Kawan, remedial measures taken by PDC
BATU KAWAN: A soil depression was detected yesterday at P149 Jalan Batu Kawan, specifically at the junction connecting the road to a newly completed bridge, according to Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari. He said the exact cause of the incident is still under investigation by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the project contractor. However, immediate remedial measures were taken by PDC upon receiving public complaints. 'PDC promptly carried out premix patching to raise the road level and installed warning signs to prevent any untoward incidents involving road users,' he told Bernama when contacted. He said the contractor will proceed with excavation work to determine the root cause of the soil depression before implementing permanent repair measures, which will involve the use of additional materials such as geotextile, basal reinforcement, and other necessary strengthening methods. 'These actions are essential to ensure long-term road stability and to prevent future soil depression. All repair costs would be borne by the contractor because the project is still within the defects liability period (DLP,' he said. Meanwhile, Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said a team of seven members from the Batu Kawan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was sent to the location after the department received a call regarding the soil depression. On arrival, the team found that a soil depression had occurred, but there were no victims involved. Immediate action was taken to close off the affected area and ensure no vehicles were allowed on the compromised section of the road,' he said. The incident gained public attention yesterday after a social media post went viral, showing images of the soil depression along the main road near the Batu Kawan bridge. The post also highlighted visible cracks on the concrete structure dividing the road. Firefighters were seen at the location, placing safety cones and taking precautionary measures to secure the area for road users.

Penang debunks viral airport fuel leak claims, confirms repairs completed in March
GEORGE TOWN, May 3 — Work to replace a plane's oil pipe that was reported to have leaked at the Penang International Airport (LTAPP) in Bayan Lepas, near here, was fully completed in March. Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said work had been carried out since December last year by an oil and gas company involved. 'I have contacted Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) and the head of the oil and gas company at LTAPP, they informed me that there was indeed a 'pipe leaking for Petronas Fuel Hydrant' there last year. 'In December (last year) Petronas had carried out pipe replacement works and was fully completed in March. The results of the leak test after the repair found that there were no more new leaks,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said this when asked to comment on a viral message on the Telegram application claiming that there was a jet fuel leak on LTAPP which supposedly has prolonged for more than five years without any solution. The message had also claimed that anyone passing by the area would smell a very strong jet fuel smell and that the smell was more pronounced in the afternoon when the hot weather caused it to fluctuate and further increase the risk of explosion or fire. — Bernama

Malaysia digital initiatives secures RM16.2bil worth of investments in four months
GEORGE TOWN: The total approved investments under the Malaysia Digital (MD) initiative reached RM16.2 billion from January to April this year, backed by strong global investor confidence, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. The minister said the investment momentum is expected to generate almost 6,500 job opportunities and reinforce Malaysia's position as a regional digital leader. He said that out of the total approved investment, RM9.9 billion or more than 60 per cent, was contributed by data centres and cloud investments. "From an innovation lens, AI (artificial intelligence) companies now make up the largest share of new MD status companies at 27 per cent, followed by data centres (23 per cent) and Global Business Services (11.5 per cent). "Investor confidence in Malaysia remains strong. Our top five sources of foreign direct investments include the Netherlands, Singapore, Hong Kong, India and the United Kingdom, a reflection of our robust infrastructure and investor-friendly policies," he said when delivering his keynote speech at the MD Open Day 2025 here, today. Also present were Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) non-executive chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh. Therefore, Gobind said those achievements reaffirmed Malaysia's appeal as a leading digital investment destination and, more importantly, reflect the real-world impact we are driving across our economy and workforce. Elaborating, he said to date, Malaysia has hosted 3,891 active MD companies, including 254 in the northern region, and currently, Penang alone has attracted RM1.23 billion in MD-approved investments, with 266 jobs expected to be created. "While 93 per cent of these investments are driven by data centres and cloud, more than 60 per cent of job opportunities are in high-value sectors such as IC (integrated circuit) design and embedded software," he added. The MD Open Day 2025 is a dedicated platform for engagement between MD-status companies, investors, government agencies, and key stakeholders within Malaysia's digital economy ecosystem. The event also marked the official launch of the Digital Ministry's northern regional office, reinforcing the government's commitment to regional empowerment and nationwide alignment.
