PENANG: Momentum is building behind a proposal for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the post of deputy president of PKR, with growing support from party members across the country, including the latest backing from grassroots leaders in Penang Many have hailed her as a unifying, reform-minded leader capable of bridging the gap between the party's founding generation and its emerging leadership. The 2024 and 2025 PKR annual congress will be held from May 21 to 24. Penang PKR deputy chairman Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid said the state PKR, along with its Youth and Women wings, stood in solidarity with state chairman Nurul Izzah, describing her as a symbol of reform and regeneration within the party. "Last March, we supported Nurul Izzah's decision to defend the vice-presidency. However, in light of the current political landscape, we fully back her if she intends to contest the deputy presidency. "Nurul Izzah's candidacy is not only about celebrating talent within the party, but also a crucial step toward revitalising the party as it prepares for the 16th General Election. "She has the background, experience and integrity to lead. With 15 years in Parliament, having represented Lembah Pantai and Permatang Pauh, and serving as Senior Economic and Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister in 2023, she is more than qualified," he said in a statement. Describing her as the "Puteri Reformasi" (Princess of Reform), Mohamad said Nurul Izzah had withstood numerous trials in her political journey, showing resilience and commitment to party values. "With the nation facing multifaceted political, social and economic challenges, PKR needs a leadership that connects with grassroots members and strengthens the party from the ground up," he said. Nurul Izzah, 44 years old, is the daughter of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and has served as a Member of Parliament. Anwar is also PKR president. Yesterday, Penang PKR Wanita officially declared its full support for Nurul Izzah to contest the party's deputy president post ahead of the upcoming party elections. Nurul Izzah, recently returned unopposed as the Permatang Pauh division chief, had previously announced her intention to contest a vice-president post in the upcoming party elections. Several PKR divisions have already voiced support for the party vice-president as a candidate for the deputy president role in the upcoming central leadership council elections, including Perak PKR, Johor PKR Youth, and several division chiefs from Melaka.
