Penn Highlands State College Partners with SAFE-T System to Provide Support for Victims of Sexual Assault
DuBois, Pennsylvania, May 29, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Penn Highlands State College is partnering with Sexual Assault Forensic Examination-Telehealth (SAFE-T) System to enhance sexual assault care in the Centre County region. 'We are excited to partner with SAFE-T System to bring top quality sexual assault care to victims who seek help from our hospital,' said Sarah Lehman, RN, BSN, Director of Nursing for Penn Highlands State College. 'Having expert nurses available 24/7 to support our patients and staff is invaluable.' SAFE-T System was launched with support from the Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime as a solution to enhance access to high quality sexual assault care in underserved communities. When someone presents at Penn Highlands State College after experiencing sexual violence, they will immediately have access to a board-certified sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). SANEs have extensive experience in the provision of sexual assault care and thanks to SAFE-T System's specialized forensic telehealth technology, their expertise can be accessed in the Centre County region. Typically, access to SANEs with this level of training and experience is often limited to large urban sexual assault centers. However, the innovative partnership Penn Highlands State College shares with SAFE-T System makes it possible to have this expertise in this region. The SAFE-T System telehealth SANE (teleSANE) can see the live exam in progress ensuring best practices, proper evidence collection and a safe and supportive environment for the patient. 'The expert nurse appears on the screen where they can talk to and support both the onsite nurse and the patient,' said Sheridan Miyamoto, Assistant Professor of Nursing at Penn State and Director of the SAFE-T Center. 'This is a true partnership. Our goal is to make sure the on-site nurse feels supported and confident during the exam and that the patient knows that they are getting the best care possible.' Sexual assault forensic examinations are free to patients and no cost is incurred for SAFE-T System telehealth support. Forensic examination services are available at Penn Highlands State College Emergency Department 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Attachment Corinne G. New partnership in Centre County gives support for sexual assault victims
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A new partnership in Centre County is bringing new technology and enhanced care for sexual assault victims to the region. Penn Highlands State College and the Sexual Assault Telehealth (SAFE-T) System partnered to bring the new technology and enhanced care. SAFE-T System was launched with support from the Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime as a solution to enhance access to high-quality sexual assault care in underserved communities. When someone arrives at Penn Highlands State College after experiencing sexual violence, they will immediately have access to a board-certified sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). 'We need to be ready to deliver a compassionate, person-centered, trauma-informed care when somebody who experiences sexual assault,' Associate Professor at the Penn State Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing, & Founder and Director of SAFE-T System, Sheridan Miyamoto said. SANEs have extensive experience in the provision of sexual assault care. Thanks to SAFE-T System's specialized forensic telehealth technology, their expertise can be accessed in the Centre County region. Typically, access to SANEs with this level of training and experience is often limited to large urban sexual assault centers. However, the innovative partnership Penn Highlands State College shares with SAFE-T System makes it possible to have this expertise in this region. The SAFE-T System telehealth SANE (teleSANE) can see the live exam in progress, ensuring best practices, proper evidence collection, and a safe and supportive environment for the patient. 'The need, especially with Penn State University being here, we have Lock Haven, we have Juniata College just down the road as well. The need is there, we're really hoping that patients feel confident in coming to us to be able to give them the care,' Penn Highlands State College ER Director, Amanda Myers, said. The goal of this system is not only top-quality care but also the hope that more people come into the facility to get help. Myers said that since many hospitals don't have the training and resources for this, many patients feel they're not going to be believed and having this new system in the Centre County community is very beneficial. Plus, she added that many still need help and care after the exam. 'Because once we treat medically, it doesn't stop for them. We see that often patients develop PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and we want to make sure that they know that once they leave our doors, we're still here for them,' Myers said. Sexual assault forensic examinations are free to patients and no cost is incurred for SAFE-T System telehealth support. A.I. expert, educator discusses technology at Richland School District
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Classrooms were empty on Monday for President's Day, but teachers from several Cambria County school districts spent the day learning. The Richland School District invited nationally recognized AI expert and education innovator, Matt Miller, to speak with teachers about integrating AI tools effectively and ethically into the learning experience. 'AI is not replacing teachers. It's a tool for the teacher toolbelt so they can help students,' Brandon Bailey, Director of Educational Services at Richland School District, said. Bailey announced that Miller would be speaking at the school earlier this month. The event welcomed educators from multiple school districts, school leaders from across Cambria County, state and local government officials, and members of the regional business community. Penn Highlands State College discusses highs and lows since launch Miller has over a decade of classroom experience and has done keynote presentations in most states across the country. He's also a teacher in Indiana. 'If students are going to need to adapt to this fast-changing world where AI continues to grow and it has an impact on the workforce, they're going to need those problem-solving skills. They're going to need to be critical thinkers. They're going to need to be, you know, agile and flexible and all of those things. And those are things that teachers have been great at for ages,' Miller said. After presenting in Johnstown, Miller said the leaders in the area seem willing to empower their students and go the extra mile for them. 'Your kids need you to do this. That's another big part of it is you're just helping them to realize that those kids that they love, that are in their classes, that they love so much, need this to thrive in their future,' Miller noted. The Richland School District will continue hosting speakers and seminars in the future, including Jim Van Allan in 2026. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
