Dalmatian was ‘clinging to life' tied up in a back alley. But she's a ‘survivor'
A gentle dog has a long road of recovery ahead of her in Philadelphia after being rescued right in the nick of time. The Dalmatian was discovered in dire condition by officials for the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) with barely any light left in her eyes, the shelter said. 'Her name is Brandy. And she is a survivor,' the shelter said in a May 30 Facebook post. The shelter's animal law enforcement team was called to an alley for a report of a dog tied up. What they found, the shelter said in its post, broke their hearts. 'Brandy, a beautiful Dalmatian, was barely clinging to life. She was emaciated, with two heavy nylon leads hanging from her neck,' the shelter said. 'Fly eggs clung to her coat. Every step she tried to take ended in a stumble. Her body temperature had dropped so low, she was hypothermic.' Photos that are attached to the post show a gorgeous dog who has been severely neglected, with her ribs visibly protruding through her spotted coat. 'We immediately rushed Brandy to our shelter hospital where our veterinary team started heat support, IV fluids, and critical medications. Her condition was dire,' the shelter said. 'Luckily, Brandy didn't give up. She fought with all she had and she's still fighting.' Even though the photos show a weary Brandy, the shelter notes that she is currently on the mend. 'She is now stable, but she is far from healed. The road ahead is long, and she will need continued care, patience, and love,' the shelter said. Kittens ‘left in a grocery bag' outside were found just in time, PA shelter says
A shelter in Philadelphia is working around the clock to help save four kittens that were left 'soaking wet, freezing, and clearly unwell' on the property. On May 22, staff at the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) found a soggy package. Inside, four kittens were fighting for their lives. 'Yesterday morning, four tiny kittens were left in a grocery bag outside of our shelter,' the shelter said in a May 23 Facebook post. 'One of our staff members noticed the bag hanging from a side door. It was cold and rainy, and something just didn't feel right, so they looked inside and found four fragile, shivering kittens barely clinging to life.' At first, it was feared that one of the kittens already had died, but the staff took action quickly. 'The kittens were soaking wet, freezing, and clearly unwell. One of them, completely still and cold to the touch, looked like he might already be gone,' the shelter said. 'We rushed them inside, began warming them up, and administering fluids. Slowly, they began to stir. We named them Lasagna, Baked Ziti, Ravioli, and Spaghetti.' While they were now warm and in a safe space, there was more bad news. 'For a few minutes, we were relieved, but then the test results came back. The kittens tested positive for panleukopenia - a highly contagious and often deadly virus in cats,' the shelter confirmed. 'The four are now in strict isolation in our shelter's hospital, receiving intensive treatment and fighting for their lives.' The shelter still has questions about who put the kittens in the bag and left them outside in bad weather. 'We don't know how long they were out in the rain. We don't know who left them. But we do know that if they hadn't been found when they were, they likely wouldn't have survived,' the shelter noted. 'Please don't abandon animals like this. There is always a better way. 'Lasagna, Ziti, Ravioli, and Spaghetti still have an uphill battle to fight, but we will be alongside them each step of the way.' For more information, visit the shelter's Facebook page.

Sad cat ‘barely lifts her head' after owner gave her up. She waits for new home
A sweet cat is in desperate need of a new home after unexpected circumstances forced her into a Philadelphia shelter. Emma, a 4-year-old black and white cat with a darling, expressive face, isn't used to shelter life. According to the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the big-eyed feline had a family and a warm spot to sleep when her word was shattered. 'Our hearts are heavy for Emma,' the shelter said in a May 21 Facebook post. 'After her previous owner lost their housing, Emma found herself back at our shelter. Here, Emma hasn't been the same. She barely lifts her head. Her eyes tell you everything - she is deeply, deeply sad.' It's made clear that Emma is a family cat, who attaches to her owner and loves those around her, including dogs. 'Before all this, Emma was described as a gentle soul. A calm, mellow cat who loved sleeping beside her person at night,' the shelter said. 'She was wonderful with kids and got along well with her dog sibling. She had a home, a routine, and family - and now she has none of that.' Not much information is given about Emma, just that she's a domestic shorthair cat who has been spayed, according to her pet profile. 'We know Emma still has love to give, but she needs a quiet, caring home to bring her spark back. We want to see her thrive again, and we know she can,' the shelter said. Shelter dog ‘lights up every room' — but keeps being overlooked. She needs home
A dog that's the equivalent of a ray of sunshine is sitting patiently in a Philadelphia shelter, waiting to be seen by someone who appreciates her light. Midnight, a 6-year-old terrier, pit bull mix, is anything but dark — as her name might suggest. But despite her charming demeanor, the sweet girl has been waiting a long time for a place to call her own, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says. 'How is it possible that Midnight is still waiting?' the shelter said in a May 19 Facebook post. 'We truly thought yesterday might be her day. She arrived at our adoption event with her usual big smile and happy tail wags, but once again, she went back to her kennel at the end of the night. 'We keep saying it because it's true: Midnight is sweet, playful, and endlessly happy. She lights up every room she walks into.' Midnight even made her presence known on a popular news station, where her charm worked overtime. 'Just the other day, during her visit to NBC10 Philadelphia, a passerby stopped and said, 'That's the happiest dog I've ever seen.' And they weren't wrong - Midnight brings sunshine wherever she goes,' the shelter said. 'After two years of being overlooked, she's more than ready for her forever. She's open to meeting respectful kids and calm, easygoing dog friends.' Along with her kissable face and personality, Midnight is a lover of toys, her pet profile says. 'Whether it's a squeaky chew toy or a plushie, she's always up for a good game of fetch or a romp around the yard. But don't worry, she's not high maintenance - she's happy to play or cuddle up beside you, whichever you prefer!' her profile says. 'Currently, Midnight is working on her training plan to become the best behaved pup she can be and would love her family to continue it.' For more information, visit the shelter's website.

Grumpy pup with a soft side at Pennsylvania shelter needs 'someone who gets him'
A dog is playing his 'grandpa card' by metaphorically telling everyone to stay off his lawn and at a distance at a Philadelphia animal shelter. But, like a Tootsie Pop, you have to endure the tough exterior to get to the soft sweetness inside. While Chino, a 13-year-old pup, can be a little cranky, he's actually just a tiny cuddle bug. 'Oh, Chino. He's small, he's crusty, and yes, he can be a bit of a grump,' the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said in a May 13 Facebook post. 'Chino is an older man who's been through more than his share of hard times. His world was recently turned upside down once again and now he finds himself starting over. At his age, that's a tough ask. 'So yes, Chino can be moody. He wants things a certain way. He doesn't always pretend to be cheerful. But if anyone's earned the right to be a little grumpy, it's him.' But don't let that fool you. Snooty scrooges often mask lovable boops. 'That being said, once you get to know him, he's all heart. With his people, Chino is a total velcro dog. He loves to be by their side and is so incredibly loyal,' the shelter says. 'He isn't looking to be the life of the party and would prefer a quiet home, but he really loves other pups and is open to meeting dog-savvy kids who respect that sometimes, an old guy just needs space. Chino's not perfect and he isn't looking for perfection — just someone who gets him.' His age may be on the tad high side, but he still loves everyday things, his pet profile says. 'He still enjoys the simple pleasures in life: exploring the yard, going for strolls, and soaking up the sunshine,' his profile notes. For more information, visit the shelter's website.
