IT: WELCOME TO DERRY Trailer Delivers the Unsettling Pennywise Prequel of Our Dreams

The origin story of Pennywise the Clown is coming to HBO Max (yep, that name is back), thanks to It: Welcome to Derry. In season one, we will go decades back to discover how all of this strangeness began for a town's children. And if the trailer for Welcome to Derry is any indication, we are in for a terrifying trip back to 1962. This season is actually the first of a planned three-season arc, with the latter two going further back in time to 1935 and 1908, respectively. So we will likely end this season with more questions that need answers. And we will also have to hope that Warner Bros. doesn't cancel the series before its story can come to completion. Either way, we are cautiously optimistic about It: Welcome to Derry based on its trailer. It shows a new family moving into Derry, Maine, where kids are going missing at a relatively rapid rate. At first, the neighbors seem cold and you'd assume racism because, well, this town seems very white and the new family is Black. That's probably a part of it, but certainly only scratches the surface of what's going down. A few intrepid youth realize that murder is likely the source of these mysteries, but they are told to not stick their noses where they don't belong. Everything happening feels unsettling and creepy to the max before we finally get a glimpse of Pennywise at the end. Good stuff! Where IT all began: HBO Max drops official teaser for 'IT' prequel series 'Welcome to Derry'

HBO Max has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Welcome to Derry, an upcoming horror series that serves as a prequel to the hit IT films. Set in the 1960s, the show explores the dark origins of the terrifying entity known as Pennywise the Clown, with Bill Skarsgård reprising his acclaimed role. The series is set 27 years before the events of the IT movies, adapted from Stephen King's classic novel, and delves into one of the creature's previous killing sprees in the haunted town of Derry, Maine. Directed by Andy Muschietti, who also helmed the two IT films, Welcome to Derry expands on the mythology of King's universe. According to Muschietti and co-executive producer Barbara Muschietti, the story is inspired by the book's 'interludes'—accounts compiled by Mike Hanlon based on interviews with Derry's older residents. 'It's so rich with characters and events, we thought we would do justice to the book and the fans by going back into this world,' the Muschiettis told Entertainment Weekly. The series highlights key themes such as fear, loss, and unity while focusing on how fear can be used as a weapon—something the creators say resonates strongly with today's world. The ensemble cast includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, and Rudy Mancuso. In addition to the Muschiettis, executive producers include Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, and Skarsgård himself. Fuchs, who penned the teleplay for the premiere episode, shares showrunning duties with Kane. Welcome to Derry is produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television and is slated to premiere this fall on HBO Max.
