Meghalaya police confirm tourist from Indore was murdered; wife still missing
The Meghalaya police have confirmed that Raja Raghuvanshi, a tourist from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, whose body was found on June 2, was murdered, and said they were trying to determine a motive. The police suspect that he was killed with a machete, which was recovered from the Weisawdong Falls, close to the spot where his decomposed body was found in a gorge on June 2. A mobile phone belonging to the victim was also recovered. The police believe a black-and-pink raincoat recovered on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) could help in locating Raghuvanshi's missing wife, Sonam. The raincoat was recovered from Mawkma village, located between the spot where Raghuvanshi's body was found and Sohrarim, where the two-wheeler used by the couple was found abandoned outside a cafe on May 24. The search for her will resume on Thursday (June 5, 2025). Attempt to hide evidence Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police of the East Khasi Hills district, told journalists on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) that the retrieved machete was a new one. 'We suspect that it was used in the murder,' he said. 'We need more evidence to ascertain whether the motive behind the murder was robbery, hatred, vendetta, or anything else. A murder case was registered earlier, and a special investigation team is probing the incident,' he said. Mr. Syiem further said it was not yet clear whether Raghuvanshi was pushed into the deep gorge before or after his death. 'The attempt was to hide evidence. The post-mortem report will reveal everything,' he added. The newly-wed couple went missing on May 24, two days after they had set out for Sohra (Cherrapunjee) in the East Khasi Hills district on a two-wheeler they rented in Shillong, about 60km away. Torrential rain and slippery conditions hampered the search. The man's body was spotted by a police drone two days ago and later identified by his brother through a distinctive tattoo on the right hand bearing his name. Items recovered at the scene that day include a woman's white shirt, a strip of Pentra 40 tablets, part of an LCD screen from a mobile phone, and a smartwatch worn by the deceased. His wallet, gold rings, and gold chain were missing. Members of the Raghuvanshi family, who are in Meghalaya, said the Central Bureau of Investigation should probe his murder. The post-mortem is being conducted at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences near Shillong.

GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Police on Wednesday confirmed that an Indore-based tourist, whose body was found in a deep gorge below the Weisawdong parking lot at Riat Arliang in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, was murdered. A machete, suspected to have been used in the murder, was recovered beside the body of Raja Raghuvanshi. A raincoat, believed to be that of his missing wife Sonam, was also recovered from a few kilometres away from where his body was recovered. Speaking to the presspersons, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the police need more evidence to crack the case. A murder case was registered and a special investigation team was formed to probe the incident. 'It is a new 'dao' (machete) that we recovered. We suspect that it was used in the murder. There is no doubt that it is murder, but we have to find out the motive behind it. It could be robbery, hatred, vendetta or any other issue. We need more evidence. It is very difficult to jump to any conclusion at this moment,' the SP said. Vivek further said that Raja was thrown into a deep gorge, but the police were not sure if it was done before or after his death. "The post-mortem report will reveal everything,' he said. The newlywed couple went missing on May 23 after they had set out for Sohra (Cherrapunjee) in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills on a rented two-wheeler. Indore's missing couple mystery: Man found dead in Meghalaya
Shillong: A rescue team in Meghalaya recovered the body of the husband while the search is on for the wife on Monday, 11 days after the tourist couple from Madhya Pradesh went missing since May 23 while visiting the northeastern state's Sohra-Cherrapunji areas. A Meghalaya police official said that since the couple Sonam (27) and her husband Raja Raghuvanshi (29) from Indore (Madhya Pradesh) went missing on May 23, the search team recovered the body of Raja Raghuvanshi on Monday, after a police drone spotted the dead body in the deep gorge below the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. The inquest was carried out in the presence of independent witnesses from the area. The relatives of the deceased identified the body as that of Raja Raghuvanshi through a distinctive tattoo on the deceased's right hand reading 'Raja'. A lady's white shirt, a strip of Pentra 40, a part of the LCD screen of a Vivo mobile phone and a smartwatch from the wrist of the deceased were recovered from the spot. Indore Couple Missing Probe: Suspected Murder Weapon Recovered In Meghalaya's Weisawdong Falls
Last Updated: The case involves Indore-based couple Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, who went missing on May 23 while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya's Sohra region Meghalaya Police have recovered the suspected murder weapon — a dao (machete) — along with a mobile phone from the deepest layer of the gorge near Weisawdong Falls. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that the search operation, now reaching the third and final layer of the gorge, was carried out by joint teams of the NDRF, SDRF, and the Special Operations Team. The case involves Indore-based couple Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, who went missing on May 23 while on their honeymoon in Meghalaya's Sohra region. Eight days later, the semi-decomposed body of 30-year-old Raja was discovered at the bottom of the gorge near the Weisawdong Falls parking area at Riat Arliang. He was identified by a distinctive 'Raja" tattoo on his right hand. The search for 27-year-old Sonam is still underway. Police have registered a murder case and are treating the circumstances with suspicion. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is leading the probe. 'We are investigating with an open mind, and all possibilities, including honour killing, are being explored," SP Syiem told CNN-News18. Evidence recovered from the site has raised serious concerns. Items found include a woman's white shirt, a broken mobile screen, a strip of Pentra 40 tablets (used for acidity), and Raja's smartwatch, which was still strapped to his wrist when the body was recovered. The couple had checked out of a homestay in Nongriat village — located around 20 km from where Raja's body was found — on May 23. They had arrived in Mawlakhiat the previous day, parked a rented scooter, and descended 3,000 steps to visit the living root bridges in Nongriat, where they spent the night. Raja's body has been sent to NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, for post-mortem examination. As the search for Sonam continues, investigators hope that the recovery of the dao and mobile phone will provide critical leads in unraveling the mystery behind the suspected double homicide.
