Council slams keyboard warriors who carp from the side lines on social media
Penzance Town Council has hit out at social media critics who have had a go at newly elected councillors. The post followed follows last week's local and county elections in Cornwall. The town council says out of the hundreds of prolific complainers on Facebook saying what should and shouldn't be done in Penzance, the number of them who had put themselves forward to be elected to the council was 'zero'. 'It's disheartening to see some negative comments aimed at new councillors before they have even started,' said the council in a post on Facebook. 'These people are not career politicians; they are local residents who have stepped up to volunteer their time for free to help our community and improve where we live with the limited resources available. 'Of the hundreds of prolific Facebook complainers saying what should and shouldn't be done in Penzance, the total number who put themselves forward to be candidates for Penzance Council in the election was zero. In a parish with a population of over 20,000, there were not enough candidates to fill 20 seats, and there are still four vacancies.' It said these low numbers were reflected across Cornwall, with a vast number of town and parish councils having uncontested elections. 'We are lucky to have a lot of community-minded residents in Penzance parish, and to have some of them as councillors - new, and re-elected. 'Whilst criticism of Penzance Council services is welcomed, a lot of the criticism seems to come from confusion and misunderstanding about what Penzance Council do, and what Cornwall Council do.'

Town clerk honoured to win national award
A man from Cornwall said it was an "honour" to win a national award for his work as a town clerk. James Hardy was named Town Clerk of the Year by the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) last month. Mr Hardy's role as Penzance town clerk is to work with the mayor and manage the council. He said his role allowed him to focus on "important things to people in the local area." The ceremony took place at the House of Lords on 25 February, and the award recognised "exceptional clerks whose dedication and expertise have significantly impacted their council," said the NALC. In a statement, Penzance Council said Mr Hardy had won due to his "focus on improving access to public-facing services". James Hardy was made town clerk in September 2022 after more than 20 years working in different local government positions. He said: "I was hugely surprised as I've only been in this role here in Penzance for two and a half years, and there's a lot of far more experienced clerks than myself. Mayor of Penzance, Stephen Reynolds said it was a "hugely well-deserved award". Follow BBC Cornwall on X, Facebook and Instagram. Weather warning issued for South West
A yellow weather warning for wind and rain has been issued for the South West on Sunday. The Met Office has warned wind speeds could reach 50 to 60 mph (80-100 km/h) between 06:00 GMT until 18:00 across Devon and Cornwall. It has also predicted 30 to 40mm (1-1.5 in) of rain will fall between 09:00 and 21:00 in an area stretching from Newquay and St Austell to South Molton and Exeter, with high grounds possibly receiving 50 to 70mm (2-2.75 in). Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said Sunday would have "very poor weather conditions, especially on the road". Penzance Council advised people on the coast to be aware of large breaking waves in high winds which "can sweep you off your feet and out to sea". It reminded members of the public to call 999 and ask for the coastguard in an emergency. Mr Madge said the current weather pattern was a tropical flow coming from further south in the Atlantic. He said: "In the weekend that will be amplified by this low pressure, which is currently building off Canada and will come across the Atlantic to affect us by Sunday." "Pretty much everywhere from the southern tips of Cornwall up to Yorkshire and then up to including everywhere north and west of that in the UK is affected by patterns of rain and wind."
