Sewage in the Illinois River has caused a Combined Sewer Overflow in Peoria
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Due to the rain, the city of Peoria has issued a Combined Sewer Overflow Alert for Monday. When Peoria gets too much rainfall, above 0.15 inches, the sewers overflow, and instead of that sewage going to the water treatment plant, it flows into the Illinois River, said Peoria Public Works spokesman Nick McMillion. Peoria City Hall updates on Sewer Overflow Control Program progress This, in turn, makes the water unsafe and can make people sick when they come in contact with it, whether it's drinking, swimming, skiing or other water activities, said McMillion. 'When this warning is posted, please avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River in the area downstream from Detweiller Marina. You may get sick if you swallow water while swimming, Jet Skiing, or water-skiing in these areas after a combined sewer overflow,' he said. The alert is for the part of the river downstream from the Detweiller Marina. Due to a federal mandate, the city is building infrastructure to avoid these sewer overflows to stay in compliance with the Clean Water Act and a CSO Consent Decree with the Environmental Protection Agency, he said. A map of areas affected, as well as more information on the CSO, can be found on the city's website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Peoria drivers can expect delays and road closures as construction season begins
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The second year of the Southwest Adams Street and Southwest Jefferson Avenue One-Way to Two-Way Conversion Project has just begun. The Peoria Public Works Department is working to improve downtown pedestrian accommodation and road infrastructure through a road conversion project that has been in the works for years. On Monday, road workers replaced the traffic signals on Southwest Adams Street with new ones. Workers also finished the sidewalks on Adams. While this project is going on, drivers can expect lane closures and changing traffic patterns. Nick McMillion, a communications specialist with Peoria Public Works, urges people to proceed with caution and slow down. He said this phase of the road conversion project will focus on pedestrian accommodation and reconstructing sidewalk corners. Another thing the project is addressing is improving safety. The current pedestal traffic signals, which are placed on the side of the roadway, are being replaced with traditional overhead traffic signals. McMillion said adding traditional overhead mass traffic signals is just one way the project will improve safety. 'The overhead mass arms just provide a higher level of visibility for all traffic, and it gives a better chance for drivers to see the actual traffic signals compared to the pedestal mounted signals,' McMillion said. The road conversion project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. The current construction phase is projected to last from March until December. In the following spring, the public works department plans to continue with phase three for half a year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
