Bond set for Grapevine Lake jet ski crash suspects
The Brief The woman accused in a Grapevine Lake jet ski hit-and-run crash had her bond set at $500,000. The man who helped her flee the crime scene has a $3,000 bond. But because both now have an immigration hold, they will stay in custody if they post bond. GRAPEVINE, Texas - A bond amount has been set for the two undocumented migrants accused in a deadly hit-and-run crash on Grapevine Lake on Memorial Day weekend. But they are not likely to get out of jail any time soon. What we know Several political officials and immigration authorities pushed for "no bond to be assigned" to 21-year-olds Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez and Maikel Coello Perozo following the death of 18-year-old Ava Moore. But a magistrate on Thursday set Gonzalez's bond for a manslaughter charge at $500,000. Perozo's bond was set at a little more than $3,000 for his misdemeanor charges, including hindering apprehension and an accident involving damage to a vehicle. However, both suspects now have an immigration hold on them. Dig deeper The immigration hold means that if the suspects do post bond, they will stay in custody until they answer the state charges against them or until they are deported. United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials would pick them up if either posted bond and take them to a federal facility, or they could stay in the Tarrant County jail, where they are now. What's next Moore's funeral service will be held in North Texas on Saturday. Moore was just weeks away from starting basic training for the U.S. military, a dream her friends and family said she was proud to pursue. She had recently graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and was home visiting her parents in North Texas for Memorial Day. The U.S. Air Force will conduct full military honors at the end of her service. Her family has asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their daughter. The backstory The crash happened near Oak Grove Park on Grapevine Lake on the evening of May 25. According to an arrest warrant affidavit, two women were on a jet ski that was traveling at a high rate of speed and dangerously close to other people in the water. Witnesses told investigators that Moore and other kayakers tried to paddle away before she was struck from behind. The 18-year-old victim suffered severe head trauma. She was pulled to shore by bystanders, then taken to a hospital where she later died from her injuries. Authorities said a passenger on the jet ski stayed at the scene and spoke with first responders. But the driver, later identified as Gonzalez, got into a vehicle with a man, later identified as Perozo. Several parked vehicles were hit as the pair drove away from the scene. Witnesses provided officers with photos and videos taken immediately after the accident, and a tip line was later set up to identify the suspects, receiving more than 900 tips. The arrest affidavit says that Gonzalez and Perozo were identified based on tips and facial recognition software. Both suspects entered the country illegally from Venezuela, according to ICE. ICE officials said they were both arrested at the time of their entry, processed for a notice to appear, then released on their own recognizance. ICE said both are now in removal proceedings. The Source The information in this story comes from Grapevine police, ICE officials, Tarrant County court records, and past news coverage.

Illegal aliens arrested in death of Air Force cadet candidate had suitcases packed: report
Packed suitcases were found during the arrests of two illegal aliens charged in the death of an Air Force cadet candidate over the weekend. Over Memorial Day weekend, 18-year-old Ava Moore was killed while kayaking on Lake Grapevine in Texas after she was hit by a jet ski. The suspected driver of the jet ski and a man who allegedly helped her flee, both illegal aliens from Venezuela, were arrested in Dallas Tuesday. Daikerlyn Alejandraa Gonzalez-Gonzalez, 22, was charged with second-degree manslaughter, a felony. Ice Identifies Jet Ski Suspects In Air Force Cadet Candidate's Death As Illegal Aliens Maikel Coello Perozo, 21, is accused of picking her up and fleeing. Authorities allege Perozo hit another vehicle while speeding off. He has been charged with a collision involving damage to a vehicle and hindering apprehension, both misdemeanors. Read On The Fox News App According to an arrest affidavit obtained by FOX 4, the suspects were found with their bags packed at the time of their arrests. Perozo reportedly told police he helped Gonzalez flee so she could avoid being captured. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department led the investigation. President Donald Trump's Department of Homeland Security on Thursday slammed the previous administration for open-border policies it says led to the death of the Air Force cadet candidate. "Ava Moore was a patriot serving her country when she was killed by an illegal alien in a hit-and-run over Memorial Day weekend. This senseless tragedy was 100 percent preventable," DHS said in a post on X. "Daikerlyn Gonzalez and Maikel Perozo entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and were released into our interior," the post continued. "The previous administration's open border policies have cost too many Americans their lives. President Trump and Secretary Noem will continue to stand with victims of illegal alien crime and their families." Texas Police Arrest Suspect After Fatal Jet Ski Hit-and-run At a news conference Wednesday, Joshua Johnson, acting field director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Emergency Removal Operations in Dallas, first confirmed the pair were present in the United States illegally. "It's my understanding that both the individuals crossed the southern border in 2023 or 2024," Johnson said. "They were arrested at the time of entry, processed on a notice to appear and then released on their own recognizance." He said ICE filed detainers for the suspects, and they will be processed for removal after criminal proceedings are concluded in Texas. Moore was remembered as a star basketball player whose lifelong dream was to be a four-star general in the military, according to her coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado. "You know, we talked throughout the course of the year that, at some point in her career, she was going to be a four-star general because she loved it," Ke'sha Blanton told Fox 4. "She made those around her better. "They took a bright, bright star from our lives." Moore was scheduled to begin as an Air Force cadet in the upcoming weeks and was part of the U.S. Air Force Academy's Class of 2029, the school article source: Illegal aliens arrested in death of Air Force cadet candidate had suitcases packed: report

Grapevine Lake Tragedy: Legacy Media Skirts Biden Admin's Release Of Alleged Killer
The illegal alien who allegedly killed a teen at Grapevine Lake was previously arrested and released during former President Joe Biden's administration, as reported by The Dallas Express. However, other local news outlets have largely overlooked this fact. After police arrested two suspects who allegedly fled after 18-year-old Ava Moore was killed on Grapevine Lake over Memorial Day weekend, officials announced they were illegal aliens who had been arrested – and released – under Biden's administration, as The Dallas Express reported at the time. The alleged killer, 21-year-old Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez – and the man who helped her escape, 21-year-old Maikel Coello Perozo – were illegal aliens from Venezuela. After Gonzalez allegedly killed Moore with a jet ski on May 25, Gonzalez and Perozo fled the scene. The Grapevine Police Department and Texas Game Wardens launched a multi-day manhunt and ultimately captured Gonzalez and Perozo on May 27. Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that day that Gonzalez and Perozo were illegal aliens 'who never should have been in our country in the first place.' On May 28, officials held a press conference and said the suspects were previously arrested and released when they illegally crossed the border under Biden's administration. The Dallas Express reported both stories soon after they broke. After Paxton announced the suspects were illegals, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram only once reported the news, the fact that the suspects were illegal aliens until the end of the article – key intel that possibly explains the suspects' motivation for fleeing. The outlet simply referred to them as 'undocumented immigrants.' Likewise, only one time did the Star-Telegram mention the fact that authorities previously arrested and released the suspects. This information appeared in a brief paragraph halfway down another article. The Dallas Morning News noted – briefly – that they were 'undocumented immigrant[s].' While the outlet has mentioned multiple times that they were in the country illegally, only – in the body of an article – did it report that authorities previously arrested, then released, Gonzalez and Perozo when they crossed the border illegally. Gonzales entered America illegally on September 28, 2023, and Perozo entered illegally on January 22, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday. Both were 'released by the previous administration into the country.' ICE has lodged immigration detainers with the suspects, and both are now 'in removal proceedings.' 'Ava Moore was a patriot serving her country when she was killed by an illegal alien in a hit-and-run over Memorial Day weekend. This senseless tragedy was 100 percent preventable,' said DHS Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin in a press release. 'Daikerlyn Gonzalez and Maikel Perozo should have never been in our country and Ava Moore should be alive today preparing for the Air Force Academy. The previous administration's open border policies have cost too many Americans their lives.' The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has a history of left-leaning coverage. In March, it published an opinion piece claiming it is a 'blessing' to love America, but 'being proud of it is a dangerous curse.' '[T]he Fort Worth StarTelegram was purchased out of bankruptcy from a California company by a New Jersey hedge fund,' Chris Putnam, CEO of The Dallas Express, posted on X. 'There's nothing remotely Texan or Fort Worth about it.' The Dallas Morning News admitted to a in June 2024 when an editor published an opinion piece explaining why the outlet does not represent conservative viewpoints. As The Dallas Express reported at the time, the paper has published pieces criticizing Texas' 'harsh moves against transgender youth' and claiming tollways 'show little mercy for Texans of color.' Reacting to the editor's piece in The Dallas Morning News, the paper's readers echoed concerns about the paper's failure to represent conservative opinions. As The Dallas Express previously reported, one reader wrote, 'Being a conservative Republican and multi-decade subscriber and a carrier way back in high school, I was on the verge of canceling your paper because of this and rising subscription rates.'

Woman charged with manslaughter in fatal jet ski collision
May 29 (UPI) -- Authorities have announced manslaughter charges against a 21-year-old undocumented immigrant accused of fatally striking an 18-year-old girl with a jet ski on a Texas lake over the weekend, in a case that has grabbed the attention of the Trump administration amid its crackdown on immigration. Texas Game Warden Capt. Joseph Quintero announced the second-degree felony charge against Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez during a press conference Wednesday. Gonzalez is accused of killing Ava Moore, 18, on Sunday. Moore, a U.S. Air Force Academy cadet, was kayaking on Lake Grapevine when she was struck by the jet ski. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. During the press conference, Quintero told reporters that Gonzalez was allegedly driving a jet ski with a second female passenger on board at a high rate of speed close to the shoreline before Moore was struck. Gonzalez and the passenger allegedly left the scene, but the passenger returned to the shore, where fire department responders were performing life-saving measures on Moore and was interviewed by Grapevine Police Department officers. Gonzalez allegedly then entered a vehicle that authorities accuse 21-year-old Maikel Coello Perozo of driving. As they fled the area, their vehicle crashed into two others, authorities said. They were both arrested in Dallas on Tuesday. Quintero said Perozo has been charged with collision involving damage to a vehicle and hindering apprehension, both misdemeanors. The passenger has not been charged, he said. Gonzalez and Perozo have been identified as Venezuelan nationals who entered the United States undocumented, which has brought federal immigration law enforcement to the case as the Trump administration has been cracking down on immigration, both legal and undocumented. "Daikerlyn Gonzalez and Maikel Perozo should have never been in our country and Ava Moore should be alive today preparing for the Air Force Academy, assistant DHS secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. "The previous administration's open border policies have cost too many Americans their lives." Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were the ones who detained Gonzalez on Tuesday. ICE said Gonzalez and Perozo were dating. The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged detainers against both suspects following their arrests. Both are in removal proceedings, it said. According to a Wednesday statement from ICE, Gonzalez entered the country Sept. 28, 2023, and was detained and processed by U.S. Border Patrol with a Notice to Appear and then released on an order of recognizance. Perozo entered the United States Jan. 22, 2023. He was released pending an immigration hearing, ICE said. On X, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, seemingly suggested capital punishment be the sentence Gonzalez should be considered for. "Welcome to Texas," he said in comment to a post about the pair's arrest. "Here's your Death Penalty." Manslaughter, as a second-degree felony, is punishable in the state of Texas with two to 20 years' imprisonment.
